SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES AT JPSS Despite being at John Pirie Secondary School for almost 5 years I remain constantly in awe of the amazing range of opportunities that the dedicated and professional staff offer students attending our school.
Last week Year 10’s participated in a University Pathways trip to experience learning in a different context and find out a little about university life. The Soccer Academy competed in Whyalla last Tuesday before attending a 3-day training camp in the city. On Saturday they competed in the Junior Soccer Association Cup and travelled to Adelaide Monday for the secondary knockout competition.
University Open Days were scheduled and staff transported senior students to Adelaide on Friday and again Sunday to explore university pathways while Jordan Beveridge spent last week in Canberra working with an ABC journalist as part of the LIFT program designed to recognise students pushing the boundaries and LIFT the culture of our entire organisation.
Science Week FUTURE EARTH was a focus last week and this week Book Week “Escape to Everywhere” is a major theme with classes involved in a range of activities to promote engagement with literature. On Monday Year 12 students Rehn Nagel and Natalie Carrion hosted a Horse Show attended by schools from across the state. It was a key part of their Community Studies course and was a massive success, wonderfully supported by the staff team.
On Tuesday evening our team hosted the JPSS Open Night. It introduces Year 7 parents and students to our school and offers a snapshot of secondary school life, the curriculum, the teachers and visits to specialist areas. It was a great success with a very pleasing turn out from families.
I’d like to emphasize that the support offered to young people and families is enormous and ongoing. Every week this staff team goes out of their way to offer extraordinary opportunities; it is a great feature of their work. Finally, last week was National Support Staff Week. It gave us a chance to thank the super team of support staff at JPSS. On behalf of teachers, students and families we thank you for the very significant contribution you make every day to young people.

Sydney Dance Company Workshop
On Friday August 4, a group
of 14 girls from JPSS
attended a creative dance
workshop with the Sydney
Dance Company. The girls
learnt a variety of warm up
exercises, choreography and
dance techniques. The workshop was run in conjunction with the
Sydney Dance Company's performance Frame of Mind at the
Northern Festival Centre. The workshop was enjoyed by all.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day
On Friday August 18,
four Stage 1 students
and I represented
JPSS at the Vietnam
Veterans Day
Observation, South
East War Memorial.
On this day in 1966,
18 young Australian
soldiers were killed in the Battle of Long Tan. The Australians
were ambushed by highly trained Vietnamese soldiers and at the
height of the battle 100 Australians were fighting for their lives
against an estimated 1000 Vietnamese soldiers.
I was both pleased and humbled by the student’s willingness to
attend and they showed great maturity and respect on the day.
This is something that we would like to continue to attend, along
with ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day in order for students to
acknowledge and remember the sacrifices Australians have
made for their country.
Well done Adam Stubbs, Chelsea-Rose Meyer, Courtney Andrew
and Rachel Leecroft.

40 hour Famine
Over the weekend of August 11-13, a number of students from
JPSS took part in the 40 hour famine to raise funds for World
Vision. The theme this year was ‘Backpack challenge’. Students
lived out of a backpack for 40 hours with very basic rations of
food, water and warmth to feel what it would be like to be a
refugee in a third world country. This special focus was about
raising awareness for the plight of refugees and displaced
peoples across Africa and the Middle East due to famine and
conflict.
Before the weekend of the famine, Emma Dwyer from World
Vision visited the school to talk about the role of World Vision in
assisting refugees and displaced people, what to expect for those
participating in the challenge as well as some fundraising ideas
and personal values to take out of the weekend. We had 37
students attend this session which shows the interest students
had in the 40 hour famine and assisting World Vision with
fundraising ideas. The JPSS Interact Club played a major role in
organising and facilitating this event.
Our target was to raise $1500 between the John Pirie Secondary
School team which is the same amount reached last year.
Currently we are around $1300 with some cash donations still
coming in. This is an amazing effort by those who took part in the
challenge. The money fundraised will go towards those less
fortunate than us. Congratulations to all students involved for
supporting this great cause!
Tanya Seidel, Rachel Leecroft, Sophie Smart, Kobain King,
Courtney Andrew, Jamie Skelton, Emanuela Cojocea, Diana
Cojocea, Tyler Meldrum, Bella Edwards, Max Bonilla and Jordan
Beveridge
Tanya Seidel led the way by raising over $300 while the other 11
participants all raised over $50 each. If you are wishing to donate
or find out more information about this challenge, please visit

School.

STEM
This semester a STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and
Maths) subject has begun as an
elective class for 48 of our year 9
students. This subject has been
created to expose students to
the world of STEM through the use of Computer Aided Design
(CAD), 3D printing and manufacturing.
The class is being run in a team taught environment with Mr
Penn a senior Math and Science teacher and Mr Wright a
Technologies teacher. All 48 students spend every lesson in the
same class ensuring they are receiving the same information and
are all up to the same point.
So far the students have
completed a CAD Peg that has
enabled them to learn the
basic skills on 3D modelling.
Some students have also had
the opportunity to 3D print
their Pegs. Moving forward

the students will be following the design process and designing,
constructing and evaluating
a Model land yacht that will be tested in a number of challenges.
Over the next 12 months STEM at John Pirie Secondary School
will undergo dramatic facility and curriculum changes to further
students’ knowledge in all of the STEM areas.

Robotics
On August 11, 17 year 9
students attended the STEM
expo at the northern Festival
Centre. These students had
the opportunity to attend
one of the many sessions
that were offered as part of
the expo. They attended a workshop that was on robotics and
programing. The students were asked to program Lego
Mindstorm robots to perform a number of challenges. They had
to make the robots navigate objects and even pick up a ball. The
students enjoyed their time with the robots with many of them
being successful in the challenges.

ABC Mock Interviews
This semester year 10
students have the privilege
of working closely with
journalists from ABC 639
North and West as part of
an ongoing partnership
with the ABC and schools.
The project involves
working with professionals, exploring media with a particular
focus on writing in various forms and for different purposes and
exposing our students to working with industry professionals.
Their first task was to
prepare a resume and cover
letter for a choice of three
fictional jobs, a garden
labourer at a Nursery, a
theatre assistant at the Keith
Michell theatre and a
receptionist at the local Tourism and Arts Centre. Students
looked at models, thought about how they would promote
themselves in words and in person and what they could take to
interview to further make them attractive to an interviewer.
The day of the interviews
arrived and the year 10’s
arrived in dress pants and
shirts, suit and tie, skirts and
dresses, looking very
polished. They were met by
the team from the ABCPetria,
Courtney and Annabel who interviewed each student
individually, assessing them on their written application and
interview. Students also met with journalist, Patrick Martin who
talked with them about his own experiences with job interviews.
At the end of the interviews Petria Ladgrove addressed the
whole group and commented on the year 10’s professionalism in
how they looked and handled themselves in an interview
situation and how impressed the team from the ABC had been
with the effort the students had put in. She found that they were
all confident and approachable and liked how some had been
creative in addressing the criteria. The students are yet to
receive their feedback but
overall this has been
positive in introducing
them to the workplace
and gives them a real life,
authentic experience.
Our next task is to look at
the various types of
writing and producing for the media, travelling to Adelaide to

visiting Parliament House, preparing our own stories and a final
celebration where we present what we have done.
We are very fortunate to be able to work with the professional
journalists at the ABC and to have such a valuable learning
experience.
