Mask vs. Respirator

Mask Respirator

Masks help protect the patient and the

environment from the exhaled breath of the

health care worker.

No Minimum filter efficiency standards for

surgical masks.

No NIOSH approval.

Masks are loose fitting and are not designed

to seal against the face.

Respirators are designed to help protect the

health care worker by reducing the exposure

of the wearer to airborne contaminants while

protecting the patient and environment from

exhaled breath

Minimum filter efficiency standards are set by

NIOSH e.g.N95. Most of the inhaled air is

drawn through the filter media and not through

gaps between the respirator and the wearer’s

face

Are NIOSH approved.

Snug fit around the face to create a good

face to respirator seal to help avoid leaks

where contaminants may enter. 3

Definition – N95 Series

The "N" or "P" designator identifies a filter's degree of protection against oil aerosols. N-series

filters are not resistant to oil, while P-series filters are strongly resistant.

Efficiency

Both the N95 and P95 filters are 95 percent efficient in removing fine particles from the air, the

minimum level of filtration approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and

Health. Higher efficiency ratings of 99 and 100 exist in both series, though the N95 filter is the

most common.

Warnings

These filters only protect against airborne particles, not chemicals and gases.

United States NIOSH Standards: define the following categories of particulate filters:

Oil resistance Rating Description

Not oil resistant

N95 Filters at least 95% of airborne

particles

N99 Filters at least 99% of airborne

particles

N100 Filters at least 99.97% of airborne

particles

Oil Resistant

R95 Filters at least 95% of airborne

particles

R99* Filters at least 99% of airborne

particles

R100* Filters at least 99.97% of airborne

particles

Oil Proof

P95 Filters at least 95% of airborne

particles

P99 Filters at least 99% of airborne

particles

P100 Filters at least 99.97% of airborne

particles

*No NIOSH approvals are held by this type of disposable particulate respirator. 3

3M Qualitative Fit Testing

3

3M Qualitive fit tests provide a pass or fail result based upon the wearer tasting a test agent.

They provide a subjective measure of the quality of the seal of the face-piece to the wearer’s face.

These tests are suitable for disposable respirators and half masks.

3M offers two kits:

• 3M FT10 includes a sweet tasting test agent

• 3M FT30 includes a bitter tasting test agent

The choice between the bitter and sweet test kit is a personal one, however a small percentage of

the population are unable to detect saccharin –if you discover this in your workforce, the bitter test

must be used.

Page 21: Respiratory Protection Naidoo 3M.pdf · 3M is the Global Leader in Disposable Respirators 3M has been at the forefront of respiratory product development since the first NIOSH respirator

3M Qualitative Fit Testing

3

During the fit test a series of exercises pictured below are performed involving breathing,

head movements and talking.:

Page 22: Respiratory Protection Naidoo 3M.pdf · 3M is the Global Leader in Disposable Respirators 3M has been at the forefront of respiratory product development since the first NIOSH respirator

3M Qualitative Fit Testing

3

If the entire test is completed without

the wearer tasting or smelling he aerosol –

a fit test pass results.

If the taste/smell of the aerosol is detected

at any point during the test, the test is

terminated and repeated after a break.
