Assign Yourself: Respiratory Practice

• Do Now:• G = green, g = yellow• T= tall, t = short• If a homozygous green short plant is crossed

with a heterozygous green heterozygous tall plant, what is the chance the offspring will be yellow and short?

Let’s grade our homework!

Respiratory System

Page 4: Respiratory system

What is the function (job) of the respiratory system?

• Gas exchange (breathing)– Getting rid of CO2 (carbon dioxide)

– Taking in O2 (oxygen)

Page 5: Respiratory system

What are the important organs in the respiratory system?

1. Mouth and nasal (nose) passages2. Trachea: tube that carries air from mouth to lungs3. Bronchi: tubes that carry air from the trachea into

each lung4. Lungs: 2 organs that fill up with air when you breathe5. Bronchioles: smaller tubes inside each lung, ending in

small bunches of alveoli6. Alveoli: tiny sacs of air, surrounded by capillaries,

where gas exchange happens. (NOT organ, a tissue.)7. Diaphragm: muscle that makes the lungs push air in

and out

Page 6: Respiratory system

Processing Piece:• Label each part of the respiratory system in the

diagram below

Page 7: Respiratory system

How do alveoli work?• Alveoli are tiny bubble-like sacs filled with air.• They are covered with tiny blood vessels called

capillaries• Oxygen (O2)diffuses (spreads out) from the air in the

alveoli to the blood in the capillaries• Carbon dioxide (CO2) diffuses (spreads out) from the

blood in the capillaries into air in the alveoli

Page 8: Respiratory system

Processing Piece:

• Draw a picture to illustrate how gas exchange happens in alveoli.

Page 9: Respiratory system

What other organs are involved in the respiratory system?

1. Epiglottis: a flap at the back of your throat that can open and close to prevent food from entering your trachea so you don’t choke.

2. Larynx: the “sound box” or “vocal chords” that allow you to make sounds and words as you breathe out; located above the trachea, below the epiglottis

Page 10: Respiratory system

Processing Piece:• In the diagram below, circle the epiglottis and the larynx.• Then, draw an arrow showing the path that air will take from nose to lungs.• There is another tube that leads to the stomach: ___________________________

Exit Ticket1) What are alveoli? 2) What happens in alveoli?

Describe which gas goes INTO the blood from the alveoli Describe which gas goes OUT from the blood into the

alveoli3) What are the main organs that air passes through

in the respiratory system?
