Respiratory Systems

Lungs

• Most terrestrial vertebrates

Respiratory System in Humans

Respiratory System Review

Heart Close Up• Atrium- small chamber pulls blood in

• Ventricle- large chamber pumps blood out

• Right Atrium- brings blood in from the veins

• Right Ventricle- pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs

• Left Atrium- brings oxygenated blood back from the lungs

• Left Ventricle- pumps oxygenated blood out to the entire body.

Gills

• Fish, aquatic amphibians, aquatic crustaceans, some mollusks, etc.

Gills move oxygen into the blood to be transported to all of the cells.

Tracheal System

• Insects do not have blood that carries oxygen. Rather, they are filled with tubes throughout the body – called trachea. They deliver oxygen directly to every cell in the body.

• Because it is difficult for air to reach every cell, insects are inherently limited in size.

Passive Diffusion- surface must be wet

• Most amphibians

• Many marine invertebrates

• Aquatic and terrestrial worms

• Single-celled organisms
