Project designers expected that bene-ciaries would use the rst disbursement orimmediate needssuch as ood, clothing, health care, and construction materials to re-build their homesand the second disburse-
ment or longer-term livelihood support. Butsurprisingly, only a quarter o the benecia-ries ollowed this strategy. Another quarter reserved the rst disbursement or longer-termneeds, such as small business investments orthe purchase o arming implements, and theremainder divided the rst disbursement or

In recognition of our decades of
experience responding to disas-

Used by hundreds of reief orga-

of cean water, adequate nutrition,
safe sheter, and other necessities.
The atest revision of the Sphere
Handbook wi take into account
the issues of cimate change,
risk reduction, and the custer

ACF was on the ground in Nakuru bythe rst week o January 2008, helpingdisplaced populations with immediate
short term needs: essential items likeblankets, pots, cooking utensils, plasticsheeting, soap, wash basins, emininenapkins, buckets, and jerry cans weredistributed. As the population o the twolarge camps in Nakuru swelled, ACFbegan nutritional surveillance and thera-peutic nutrition programs or childrenunder 5 years o age. We also initiatedthe construction o latrines, showerblocks and water point acilities in thecamps as well as soak away drainage andreuse pits. More IDPs continued to ar-rive and the need or hygiene and healtheducation programming grew critical.Tis sot style o program complement-ed the hardware construction phases oour water and sanitation activities.

a not-or-prot trade association or thecommercial inormation management in-dustry, used a cross-country motorcycle trekto raise awareness and vital unding or theght against malnutrition. Te trip is therst charitable activity or the associationand will be part o PRISMgives, a broaderphilanthropic eort. Te magnitude oenergy and enthusiasm or PRISMgives
was overwhelmingwe just had to comeup with a kick-o activity that was equallyexciting, said PRISMgives project coordi-nator, om Adams.
Te cross-country event took place
May 10-16 and covered nearly 2,800miles. Riders averaged an 8-hour dailyschedule, traversing the varied terrain othe American South and by-passing majorcities. Everyone interested in eliminatingglobal hunger was encouraged to get in-volved, either by riding or donatingandthe dedication really paid o.We exceededour $25,000 goal and are still receivinggits! exclaimed Adams.
As the global hunger crisis crescendoed lastsummer, leading childrens clothier Estellaembarked on a retail journey to help make
hunger history. During a our-month cam-paign beginning in September 2008, Estelladonated $0.60 or every online transactionor in store purchasethe cost equivalento a packet o Plumpynut, the lie-savingReady-o-Use-Food (RUF) used to save thelives o malnourished children.
Estella was eager to help children inneed given the companys mission. Tiscampaign was designed to raise awareness
o RUFs like Plumpynut, a little knownbreakthrough cure or a big disease afictingless ortunate babies and kidskids who are
the same age as the children our store catersto, said Estella co-ounder Chike Chuk-
wulozie. Te campaign was an astoundingsuccess, raising over $10,000 in just 12
