They let lowly shepherds draw near, they received blessings and praise from pious Simeon and faithful Anna, they accepted gifts of the foreign magi. They didn’t judge those who came near to worship or appreciate this child who had interrupted their lives. All: We come to worship the one true God who brings together all who have need of the divine presence. *Opening Hymn “We Three Kings” UMH 254 Confession and Pardon Holy and awesome God, we stand in your presence filled with regret for our many sins and failings. Though there is greatness in us, and a deep longing for goodness, we have often denied our better selves and refused to hear your voice calling us to rise to the full height of our humanity. In the pride of our hearts, and our unwillingness to repent, we have turned away from the cross of Christ, and have grieved the Holy Spirit. All offer prayers of confession in silence. The Lord God is merciful and gracious, endlessly patient, loving, and true, showing mercy to thousands, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, and granting pardon. Amen. Opening Prayer God of flaming skies, we set out on a journey to worship you. We know that along the way we will encounter you in the face of strangers and in the depths of despair. We know we will find you in our pain and in our rising joy. Meet us at the beginning, meet us at the end, and walk with us in between. Amen. After the EpiphanyTodayAt the end of December and the beginning of January, people tend to reminisce and wonder. We review the highlights of the past year, reflect on what happened and what might have been, and wonder about the coming year. In the midst of all this, we read of Jesus making a wonderful proclamation in the synagogue in Nazareth: God’s Spirit has anointed him to preach good news, to set captives free, and to declare God’s “favor” on the world. Beyond that, Jesus declares, “today this has come true in your hearing” (Luke 4:21b). As we look at the world around us, at the year that has just ended, and at all that lies in front of us, what might it mean to be told that “today” all this wondrous scripture about God’s activity in our world is coming true? How can we live that out? We are called by God for just this present moment that lies before us and are invited to participate in it with all we have, and to extract from it all we can. Today, God’s word is coming true in our world. What part will we have in all of that?• Imagine God’s Spirit anointing you to do things. What are some of the things you feel yourself called to do?• Many of the scriptures in this season carry a sense of urgency. What happens to the world if we “miss out”?

Focus passagesJanuary 13, 2019 Luke 3:15–17, 21–22January 20, 2019 John 2:1–11January 27, 2019 Luke 4:14–21February 3, 2019 Luke 4:21–30February 10, 2019 Luke 5:1–11February 17, 2019 Luke 6:17–26February 24, 2019 Luke 6:27–38March 3, 2019 Luke 9:28–36, (37–43)

January 13 - Gum Spring UMC Handbell Choir will be joining us in worship. Cristal and Junior Hall play handbells now!!!“…a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased’” (Luke 3:22b).We can perhaps too quickly read a verse such as this and readily apply it to Jesus, but shy away from it having anything to do with us. But pause for a moment. There is no reason to think that God is not well pleased with us, too. We are created in the divine image, and God has blessed each of us and sees us as special. There are of course times when we disappoint God, and when what we do is not always pleasing. But still…there is no reason not to celebrate that we are still the beloved of God. Celebrate that!

January 20“Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him” (John 2:11).We all have to start somewhere. John tells this intriguing story of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding (unique to this gospel) and declares it is the first sign that Jesus performed. It is intriguing, given that running out of wine at a wedding can be a very serious matter, but is hardly life and death. On the other hand, perhaps more than anything else this miracle is a reminder that Jesus comes to share life and celebration and goodness. However we understand the story, John wants us to know that this is the point at which Jesus’ disciples began to believe in him. What are signs and happenings in your life that have caused you to believe in Jesus? What are occasions where you have come to celebrate life a little more fully because of the presence of Christ?
