Ardtornish Children’s Centre Update

Thank You

Our sincere thanks to those wonderful parents, relatives and volunteers who have contributed to our programs at the Centre in 2016 – cooking, washing smocks and tea towels, building a home for the chickens and a mud kitchen table, sorting literacy kits, joining our excursions, caring for chickens, wrapping, cleaning, contributing to the Governing Council and importantly, being there to support each other.

What we do would not be possible without your contributions and we are very grateful. Thanks you.

Tracey’s Care Column Dear Families, The Christmas season is expected to be a time of joy, but for many people this one day can be a time of stress, anxiety, disappointment or loneliness. Christmas time seems to come with high expectations of perfect, happy families, enjoying luxurious celebrations and gifts, but most of us are not able to live up to these ideals. Christmas time is about love, showing love to our family and friends, by being kind, caring and supportive to one another. Some people may experience feelings of isolation, financial pressures or increased family conflict that can make this a very stressful time of year. For those who have recently lost a loved one, Christmas can intensify feelings of grief and sadness. Some thoughts on ways we can ease some of challenges…. Financial pressures….you could try only buying gifts for the children and have a Secret Santa for the adults or keep spending to a set amount per person. For family outings, go to freeadelaide.com.au for information on free events around South Australia. Family tension….prepare yourself mentally in advance for socialising, avoid topics of conflict, plan to put aside the adult ongoing squabbles and decide to put the kids first and help make their day a special one. Grief….be kind to yourself, allow yourself space and time to be alone if needed, drink a toast to your loved one, talk about your special memories, take a walk. Loneliness….stay in touch with loved ones via the phone or social media. If you are on your own this Christmas why not volunteer with the Salvos or other charity, you will feel great when giving out to others. Listen to the radio, they have a great way of reaching out. Plan to go out somewhere. Go along to your local church and sing some Christmas carols on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You will be very welcome and will make new friends. I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe holiday break. Tracey Cooper Pastoral Care Worker
