The interview question that stresses me out the most (besidesthe what are your weaknesses question) is the tell me aboutyourself questionor statementor request, whichever it is.What do employers really want to hear? Im assuming thatthis isntthe time to regale colorful stories of my childhood inthe deep south, but what should I be talking about?Tell me about yourself in a job interview really means giveme an overview of who you are, professionally speaking.Theres a reason this is asked at the very beginning of aninterviewit says give me the broad background before wedive in to specifics.

You want to be ready with about a one-minute answer thatsummarizes where youre at in your career (generally with anemphasis on your most recent job), what you do, and what thestrengths of your approach are.

For instance: I got into technical writing because I found thatI have an unusual mixture of technical aptitude with writingskills. Id worked as a software engineer for the first few years

of my career, but when I saw how rare it was to find peoplewith that kind of technical background who could also write, Istarted moving into technical writing. Ive found that I lovetranslating complicated technical information into words thata non-technical person can easily understand, and the factthat I come from a software background means that I cancommunicate well both with the tech team and my intendedaudience. My last boss told me that I was the only employee

shed ever had who mixed those two skills to the extent that Ido! Being able to bridge those two worlds so comfortably isthe reason I was especially interested in the position here.

For someone whos more entry-level and doesnt really have acareer to describe yet, the answer would be more forward-

looking. For instance: Ive always been a news junkie and Ispent my last two years in school preparing myself to work incommunications when I graduated. I sought out internshipsand extracurricular opportunities that would expose me tomedia relations work, and Im excited to continue on thatpath. Ive been told that Im particularly good at coming upwith creative story pitches, and I love pitching, but I reallywant to learn every aspect of this business from the groundup. Id like to work in-house rather than in an agency, and Imespecially interested in advocacy work, so Im particularlyexcited about this opportunity.

As you see in these two examples, you want to keep thisfocused on your professional persona. Dont bring kids into it,or your spouse, or where you grew up. Thats not to say youcant say anything personal, but make sure theres a relevantreason for raising it. For instance, you could add somethinglike, And I grew up in this area and still have family here, soIm really excited about the prospect of moving back. (Hencesignaling to the interviewer that youre not going to be flighty

    about relocation.)

Whatever your answer is, practice it out loud over and over soit flows right out of your mouth in the interview. Dont try towing it!

    You know its coming.

Its the most feared question during any job interview: Do you think I would look good in a cowboy hat?

Just kidding. The real question is: Can youtell me about yourself?

Blecch. What a boring, vague, open-ended question. Who likes answering that?

I know. Im with you. But unfortunately, hiring managers andexecutive recruitersask the question. Even if youre

notinterviewingand youre outnetworkingin the community you need to be ready to hear it and answer it. At all

    times.

Now, before I share a list of 10 memorable answers, consider the two essential elements behind the answers:

The medium is the message. The interviewer cares less about your answer to this question and more about the

confidence, enthusiasm and passion with which you answer it.

The speed of the response is the response. The biggest mistake you could make is pausing, stalling or fumbling at

the onset of your answer, thus demonstrating a lack of self-awareness and self-esteem.

Next time youre faced with the dreaded, Tell me about yourself question, try these:

    1. I can summarize who I am in three words. Grabs their attention immediately. Demonstrates your ability to

be concise, creative and compelling.2. The quotation I live my life by is Proves that personal development is an essential part of your growth

plan. Also shows your ability to motivate yourself.

    3. My personal philosophy is Companies hire athletes not shortstops. This line indicates your position as

a thinker, not just an employee.

    4. People who know me best say that Im This response offers insight into your own level of self-

    awareness.

    5. Well, I googled myself this morning, and heres what I foundTech-savvy, fun, cool people would say

    this. Unexpected and memorable.

    6. My passion isPeople dont care what you do people care who you are. And what youre passionate

about is who you are. Plus, passion unearths enthusiasm.

    7. When I was seven years old, I always wanted to beAn answer like this shows that youve been

preparing for this job your whole life, not just the night before.

    8. IfHollywood made a move about my life, it would be calledEngaging, interesting and entertaining.

    9. Can I show you, instead of tell you? Then, pull something out of your pocket that represents who you are.

Who could resist this answer? Who could forget this answer?

    10. The compliment people give me most frequently is Almost like a testimonial, this response also

indicates self-awareness and openness to feedback.

Keep in mind that these examples are just the opener. The secret is thinking how you will follow up each answer with

relevant, interesting and concise explanations that make the already bored interviewer look up from his stale coffee

and think, Wow! Thats the best answer Ive heard all day!

How to Answer the "Tell Me About Yourself" Question in a JobInterview

By Taunee Besson, CMF, CareerCast.com Senior Columnist

Q: I have animportant job interviewnext week. To prepare for it, I've been

thinking about thequestions that HR might pose to me. The problem is, I

alwaysget nervouswhen a manager asks me to "Tell me about yourself." I

never know how to answer, since the question is just so vague. What is an

interviewer looking forwhen they ask this?

A: You can assume this question is part of theinterviewer's strategy for

getting to know you. The point is to ask a very open-ended question, sothey can see how you choose to answer it. What you say can give a great

indication of how you will react to the day-to-daydemands and stresses of

    the jobyou hope to get.

Some people start their answer with, "I was born in Buffalo," and proceed to offer a long autobiography of childhood

and work experiences augmented by their marital status, hobbies, children's activities, etc. Caught off guard,

othersblurt out everything they wanted to avoid telling the interviewer, such as the latest on their messy divorce.

Others freeze like a deer in the headlights and fall into a panic-stricken silence, while a few recite a carefully written,

often stiltedself-marketing commercialthey've got memorized. As you might imagine, none of these applicants are

likely toimpress their interviewer and get the job.

To answer this interview question the right way, you need to plan your response in advance. Find out about the job

description and requirements online or throughnetworking, then highlight some of its key points. Then pull the

experience, skills, personality traits, values and education from your background that you think specifically matches

what the employer is looking for. Then, work these elements into a two- or three-minute answer that captures the

essence of what the employer needs to know, without going into too much detail. Being prepared and concise will

score you a lot of points in a job interview, especially when you're meeting with a potential manager, because these

are characteristics inherent in successful professionals.

Another tactic is to answer any vague question with a question of your own. If someone says "tell me about yourself,"

you might come back with "What would you like to know?" This forces the interviewer to specify what they're looking

for, and also gives you more time to prepare come up with a good answer. Using this technique is the equivalent of

the "nuclear option," however, so you should use it sparingly. But done right, it can be very effective in establishing

mutual respect between you and your interviewer. It's a polite way of saying, "let's cut the games and get down to the

real issue of discussing this job."

This can anger some mangers, but others will find your confidence and candor refreshing - and in today's

employment market, sometimes it takes a little extra risk to gain the reward of a great new job.

How do you respond to "Tell me about yourself" in a job interview?April 3, 2011 7:57 PM Subscribe

How do you respond to "Tell me about yourself" in a job interview? Details inside.

I realized that "Tell me about yourself" is a vague question that gives me a lot of leewayand really allows me to highlight my skills and how I can help the company. How do I do that? What are your stories like? Did they simply describe your pastexperiences? Your career goals? How do I frame it in a way that isn't just me stroking myown ego? How do I sound more authentic and less like I just rehearsed a speech?

    Examples are also very welcome.

Bonus question: I graduated from college recently and at this point in my life... I don'thave any specific career goals. Basically, I want to just gain some experience in differentfields and see what fits. I'm not sure how to frame that in a positive way for employers.posted byjoeyjoejoejrtowork & money(19 answers total)102 users marked this as a favorite

Humanize yourself. Tell them where you came from, why you decided to be what youwanted to be. It's harder for them to just see you as just a resume to be rejected when

they know just a small tidbit of the human being you are.posted byinturnaroundat8:01 PMon April 3, 2011

Humanize yourself, but tell the interviewer things he wants to hear, only less obviously. Forme, in Vancouver, that means convincing the interviewer that I want to work in Vancouver, not in my hometown or in Toronto, where there's more money to be made. So I saysomething like this: "I grew up in [suburban Canadian city] but spent a few years living in[massive Asian megapolis] and after that I wanted to find a compromise between the two.Vancouver is the best of both worlds, which is why I came here to [do what I'm doing]." Atthis point, the interviewer is interested in me enough to ask follow-up questions and it's nolonger as much of an interview and more of a conversation.posted bysmorangeat8:10 PMon April 3, 2011 [1 favorite]

I always try to work in 1-2 parallels to job qualifications in my "about me". A bit lameperhaps, but I've had a pretty decent interview track record. I'd do one sentence onpersonal background, then skip to college and job experiences, and follow up with a few

    personal interests.

The "college" anecdote would be something like, "In my undergrad years, I worked onProject X, which was really interesting because 'blah blah blah'. Working on that project wasthe first time I encountered rigorous statistical methods, and soon I was obsessed with withthe ins and outs of Y Analysis. My results showed this great thing about blah blah blah, and

led me to pursue Field Z." And "coincidentally" analytical skills and proficiency with ananalytical software package happen to be high on the list of job qualifications.

If the interview's going well, the interviewer might ask more about Project X, a moreinteresting subject than the same old conversation she's been having in every otherinterview. And it doesn't feel to either party like a random digression because I already tiedthe project to analytical skills.

And I don't think it's bad to sound rehearsed: it means you cared enough to prepare.posted bylesli212at8:21 PMon April 3, 2011

"Well, let's see - you already have my educational and work background on my resume. Bythe way, was there anything on my resume that you wanted to know more about? I'd behappy to go into more detail. I graduated law school in 2007 after realizing that the practiceof law wasn't for me - but it absolutely wasn't a waste. It turns out that it turned me on tothe wild and crazy world of regulatory compliance. I really think that there are some peoplewho are just born with the right personality for this kind of work - y'know? Ha! I know Iwas. When I was three, my parents took me to the zoo and I noticed a mouse eating theelephant's food and I asked my parents if we shouldn't report it to someone. I have anatural propensity to look for Right and Wrong. Luckily, law school taught me theimportance of establishing boundaries in otherwise murky and grey areas. And I'm blessedwith the ability to read reams of truly dry material and write with great respect for the

economy of words. I know, it probably marks me as a freak, but I really love the stuff. It isso... precise. Anyway, aside from that - I grew up in the area, I've got an adorable dog, andI am a classical musician. What else can I tell you about?"posted byjphat8:22 PMon April 3, 2011 [1 favorite]

First: KEEP IT SHORT. If you're in college or 1 year out, 60 seconds. If you've been workingfor 5 years, 120 seconds. If you've been working for 10 years, 180 seconds.

I once had a candidate that went on for 5 full minutes about his life, speaking in a way thatI couldn't get in a word edge wise. FAIL. And for the love of god, do not use this time to

    read back your resume.

Second: Practice. Leave a voicemail for yourself answering "Tell me about yourself". Thenplay it back. Improve. Repeat. How to avoid sounding rehearsed? Look the person in theeye, be animated, try to repeat words that she used. (Worse than sounding rehearsed? 5minutes of wandering and um's)

Third: Now, the content. (Yes, this really is third) Your answer should reflect what theposition is looking for, ideally through your personal interests and a related past experience.

Touch upon it lightly - tease, so that the interviewer will want to learn more.

Tip: How to brag without bragging. "At Acme, I was incredibly fortunate to be on the teamthat created SuperToilet Gold. Even though I worked 20 hours a day in the office, it was soexciting to see our customers ooh and ahh at the new surround sound system that startedout as a daydream of mine."

No employer wants to hear that you don't have specific career goals - so please don't eversay that. For the love of god, please pretend that you are super interested in this jobbecause of your career passions. How about this?

"Out of college, I decided to become a field reporter for Reuters in Somalia because of mybackground in journalism, and my passion for travel and adventure. But as I wrote moreabout the pirates, I realized that there was more to the story - where did they get theirsupplies? how did they finance their missions? The more I dug into this, the more fascinatedI got about finance in general. There are people with money. There are people who needmoney to make money. Investment banking helps bridge this gap, and that's why I'm heretoday interviewing at Goldman Sachs. Besides, after working with pirates, I think I can workwith even the most demanding of clients here."posted byveryblue1at8:28 PMon April 3, 2011 [52 favorites]

"Tell me about yourself" is sometimes a sign that your interviewer is not prepared, and hasbarely had time to skim your resume before he sat down with you. (This is especially true ifyou get the question more than once during the day of interviews.)

I usually take this as an invitation to give my "elevator pitch" about my particular skillset, and I use that as a jumping off point to give a brief narrative about where I've been in theindustry and some of my noteworthy cases/projects (and how that fits in with the needs of

the company/firm I'm interviewing with). This is NOT reading back my resume; rather, it'shitting the high points in a way that hopefully reminds the interviewer why I'm there andwhat I'm all about.

The worst interviews are the ones in which this doesn't spark more conversation, butoftentimes, while you're answering the question, the interviewer is reading your resume andhas figured out what they want to ask more about, or you've given them something that willgive you a jumping-off point for more conversation.posted byQuantumMeruitat8:35 PMon April 3, 2011

veryblue1 -You're probably right about saying "I have no career goals" but I'm afraid that whilefeigning interest with my spiel, the interviewer's BS detector is going off the charts. That's a terrible attitude to bring into an interview. Whether it's true or not, yourinterviewer is going to pick up your hostility and prevent you from getting the job.

You're a recent college grad. I've interviewed at least a dozen recent college grads. All listedthe exact same classes and similar unrelated work experience, and filled it the remainingspace with a lot of fluff from the career center. On paper, they were indistinguishable andboring. But some candidates, when asked this "non-question", talked about the complexprojects they completed, the concepts they learned on these projects, how their part-timejobs somehow related to this job, and the interesting things the company was doing andhow they hoped to work on these interesting things. These were good answers.

Other candidates complained about their lazy classmates, talked about how the classroom

material wasn't relevant, vaguely described projects with no result, and recalled how the jobdescription "matched their skills". These were bad answers.

Don't think of the question as a lazy interviewer's fallback. The question is a simple methodto gauge how you communicate thoughts and ideas: whether you can hold a simpleconversation with being boring or over-communicative.

In response to your bonus question: I interview recent college grads for entry-levelpositions with my company. The worst, absolute worst, thing they can do is respond to thequestion "So, why are you interested in working for [Company Name]?" with something like"Well, I need a job, and you were hiring, so...." or "I'm actually interested in working in[unrelated field], but that's hard to get into" or whatever. (Yes, actual examples.)

Do I automatically believe everyone who says that [Company Name] is their dreamcompany? Of course not. I honestly don't care if their reason is bullshit. I assume everyone

entry-level doesn't know what the job is actually like and will be giving it a try-out, and itreally won't be for everyone. But I want someone adept enough to know they should showenthusiasm about the job.

So, yeah... if your interviewer is anything like me, telling them you're not interested in thatparticular job, you're just trying things out to see what interests you, is the kiss of death.Surely there's at least one reason why you applied for that specific job? Think about that.posted bypie ninjaat2:29 AMon April 4, 2011 [1 favorite]

I always ask this question a lot - it doesn't mean anything, so what the interviewee makesof it is a pretty transparent window into who they are. There's no real way of gaming it.Most of the time, the interviewer is in control, but this question gets at what happens whenthe interviewee is offered the driver's seat. Do they notice they've been offered it? If theydo, how do they take advantage of it? Where do they try to direct the conversation? Ideally, they should highlight their strengths, because mostly I'm going to be digging around forflaws, and I also like to ask some questions that let them put their best foot forward andthis lets me know what I should be asking. Also, if they get rattled by the hard questions, Ican go back to things they feel more confident about so they don't sabotage the rest of theinterview with nervousness.

One way to approach it: imagine that afterwards, the interviewer is going to run into theirboss, who will say "Hey, how did it go with joeyjoejoejr?" What do you want them to say?

HR be damned - "Tell me about yourself?" is a great interview question because it comes upall the time in real-world business contexts: when project teams are getting together for thefirst time, when making a sales presentation to clients and at the start of a training coursesfor example. In these circumstances it is quite common for people to reveal themselves as

overly egotistical, long-winded, vindictive and hostile or shy: not ideal qualities for acolleague.

In a group context the question is normally asked in a round-robin style - which means thatthere will normally be somebody else who speaks before you and who therefore gives youcues about what you might say and how long you might take so say it. In the interview you

have no such support so you need to be careful and observant:

I would recommend a couple of additional techniques:1. If you start by describing where you were born then you risk waffling; so start with thepresent (why you are here today for this interview) and work backwards (why you are are agreat candidate, how you came to be such a great candidate). As others have suggested -keep it really concise and don't be afraid to include some teaser information.

    2. Keep a really close eye on the interviewer(s): feed them some information and then lookat them to see if they are still interested. Are they meeting your eye? Smiling or nodding atyou to go on? If not then shut up.posted byrongorongoat3:37 AMon April 4, 2011 [4 favorites]

Data point: I would usually start my interviews with 'What did they tell you about thisopportunity?' but 'Tell me about yourself' would have done about the same thing: Start theinterview by giving the candidate a chance to warm up with the thinking and the talking, and let their personality start to emerge with a softball question, while giving me a chanceto review (review, not look at for the first time) the resume and highlight any areas Iwanted to ask about. If someone were interviewing me, I would respond to 'Tell me aboutyourself' with the 60-second tour of the relevant portions of my work experience, just incase the interviewer hadn't scrutinized my resume, and I would find some way to wind it upwith something like '... when I realized that more than anything else, I was looking for a

position that let me utilize my problem-solving skills in the finance world, which is why I'mso excited to be talking to you about working at Your, Firm.' Then you've started theinterview out on a path, on which the interviewer might choose to follow you, letting youfeel more in control; you've given them work highlights, in case they didn't already lodgethemselves in the interviewer's brain; and you've shown that you know something aboutthe job (what with the highlighting of the relevant work experience) and the firm. You mighteven have kept them from asking why you left your last position.

On the bonus question: I don't think I would be honest about not knowing what I want todo, unless you're applying for entry-level stuff, but you or others are free to disagree withme.posted bytroywestfieldat6:48 AMon April 4, 2011 [1 favorite]

By the end of a successful job interview, youve demonstrated that you have the skills andexperience to be a tremendous asset to your prospective employer. More importantly, youve convinced potential new colleagues that youll be a great person to have around the

officethat you arent the least bit annoying and that youll get along with everyone. Howdid you accomplish all that? You followed these 12 tips, which Ive developed through years

    of advising anxious job seekers.

    Before the interview:

    1. Celebrate. Hooray! Youve landed a job interview! Someone looked at your rsum andthought, Id really like to meet this person. On paper, your background and skills match

up with an opportunity you find fascinating. That alone is a huge accomplishment. Iencourage my candidates to feel as optimistic and excited about their interviews aspossible. I know theyll get the job when theyre over-the moon excitedand when they caneffectively bring that positive energy with them on the day of their interview.

    2. Do your homework. Take time to research your prospective employer and every singleperson who will be interviewing you. While you certainly dont want to mention that youthought one of their status updates was funny, you do want to be able to mention duringthe course of the conversation something from their professional background that you eitherrelate to or find especially impressive.

    3. Write it out. I encourage my candidates to write out answers to common interview

questions. (Google common interview questions for an adequate list.) Preparing answersto difficult questions will help you stay calm and focused on the day of your interview.

My candidates struggle most frequently with the seemingly benign, So, tell me about

yourself. This is not an opportunity to tell your whole life story. Nor is the interview a freetherapy session. Instead, this is an opportunity to explain to your interviewer why youresitting in their office. For example, I might say I began my career as an attorney but

quickly realized that recruiting is much more gratifying to me. Ive been in this field for thepast six years and my clients adore me. I decided I wanted to meet with you because your

    13/23

    company.

As youre crafting your answers, make them as specific as possible. If youre asked, Whatare your greatest strengths? dont just respond with a list of adjectives because that

doesnt tell your interviewer anything real about you. Define what you mean byresponsible, give an example of how youve been amazingly responsible in the past, and

then discuss what you were able to achieve with your amazingly responsible self. Writingout your answers ahead of time will help you come up with smart things to say, and (moreimportantly for some of us, ahem) help you to keep your answers concise.

    4. Prepare smart questions. How can you demonstrate that youre assertive and thatyoure genuinely interested in a job? Ask lots of thoughtful questions. Go into your interview

prepared with a list of diverse, courageous questions. One of the biggest mistakes Ive seen

candidates make is avoiding talking about the potential red flags theyve identified. Wasthere something about the job description that worried you? Have you heard you might bereplacing a person who walked on water as far as everyone youre meeting with is

concerned? If youre serious about rolling up your sleeves and taking on this job, then theseissues should be raising important questions in your mind. Ask those questions.

    The day of the interview:

    5. Look (and smell) your best. Dress professionally (rarely will a candidate go wrong in awell-tailored black or navy suit), dont wear any cologne or perfume or smoke somethingthat might make you smell disgusting to someone whose nose works differently than yoursdoes, and turn your cell phone off.

    6. Be early, but not annoyingly so. Arrive 15 minutes early, not 30 minutes early or 2hours early. Arriving more than 15 minutes early is a huge pet peeve of a lot of my clientswho feel pressured into re-arranging their schedules when they hear a candidate is waitingfor them in the lobby.

    7. Calm yourself. If you start to feel anxious in the car or in the elevator on your way upto the interview, force yourself to yawn a few times to regulate your breathing. Another tipfor alleviating anxiety: when youre seated in the lobby, keep both of your feet firmlyplanted on the floor. Keep them that way throughout your interview if you can. And try toremember that anxiety is just the evil twin of exuberance; give yourself permission to feelexcited!

    8. Be friendly. As you walk in the door, remember that your main goal is to go in thereand make some new friends. Every single person you meet with (and this absolutelyincludes the receptionist) is wondering if theyre going to like you. And you should be

wondering if youre going to enjoy their company too. So be genuine, polite, warm, andopen with everyone you meet. And think about your body language: dont cross your legs,

do not cross your arms under any circumstances, and maintain healthy eye contact.

    9. Mirror. Be acutely aware of your interviewers energy and body language so that youcan practice something I call mirroring. Here are some examples from previousexperiences: If your interviewer greets you with, Oh my goodness! Im so sorry if Ive kept

you waiting! My baby barfed on my blouse this morning and it took me forever to changeand get out the door. What a crazy morning! you want to match her energy, but in agenuine way. Feel free to share a similar story about your cat spitting up on your sofa justbefore a dinner party was about to begin (for example). Note that you always want your

  • 7/27/2019 Responsible for the Daily Managing of Staff and the Assigning of Duties

    14/23

story to be shorter. And pay attention to your interviewers body language as youre

speaking. If her eyes drift away from you, if she keeps glancing at her clock or hercomputer wrap it up!

If, however, you meet with someone who is incredibly formal and starts the conversationwith a terse Why do you want to work here? you will want to stay on your toes and refrain

from telling any cat-vomit stories. Pause before answering each question to gather yourthoughtswhich should be easy, because youve already practiced what youre going tosay!

    10. Keep it conversational. If at any point your interviewer sighs deeply and says, So,do you have any questions for me? know that you have notdone your job. Youve boredyour interviewer and havent been engaged throughout the meeting. To avoid this deadly

situation, do your best to treat the interview as a conversation, asking your thoughtfulquestions along the way rather than saving them until the end.

    After the interview:

    11. Email your thanks. Email personalized and thoroughly proofread thank-you notes to

every single person you met with if you were able to get their business cards (yes, separateemails for each person). Email is preferable because the recipients can immediately replyand give you a sense of where you stand. AlsoI have to mention this because itshappened to so many of my candidates in the pastdo not use an email address that isoverly creative or vaguely inappropriate.

    12. Be patient. Companies can, and often do, take up to a month to extend offers. (Yetonce you receive an offer, most employers will require a decision from you within 72 hours.)If you dont get the position you were hoping for, know that something better is waiting foryou. The more interviews you do, the sharper your interviewing skills will get. And the moreinterviews you go on, the more likely you will be to find a place that is truly a good fit foryou. Best of luck!

Bangalore: After focusing on consolidation and margin improvement for a year, apparel

makerRaymond Ltd intends to return its sights to growth and higher profitability in the current fiscal

    year.

TopRaymondexecutives sent out the signal in a conference call with analysts on Monday in which

Raymonds newly appointed chief financial officerM. Shivkumarindicated that the companys net

debt may go up by Rs.150-200 crore this financial year owing to the companys capital expenditure

    plans.

Around Rs.342 crore of debt is due for repayment in the third and fourth quarters of 2013-14 which

will be replaced by long-term debt, or other loans, he said.

Raymond appointed consultancyAccenture Plclast year for a margin improvement programme and

consolidated its apparel business structure to improve cost efficiency. These measures have

resulted in the firm boosting cash flow from operations by 42% to Rs.326 crore in the year ended

March, according to brokeragePhillipCapital (India) Pvt. Ltd.

The management indicated that 2013-14 will see a lower proportion of discounted sales and better

control over inventory levels, two factors that analysts say typically eat into profitability and dent cash

    flows.

The company has been focusing on improving cash flows and margin improvement. While the net

debt, at Rs.1,347 crore, has remained almost same compared to a year before, investors would ask

for reduction in debt by sale of non-core assets, saidAnkur Agarwal, an analyst at Nomura Equity

    Research.

On the analysts call, Raymond executives said a team is exploring options to realize value from its

120 acres of land in Thane on the outskirts of Mumbai.

The inventory daysa measure of efficiency based on the number of days that a company holds its

inventory before selling itdeclined from 155 days to 144 days in FY13 and the improvement is

largely led by textile business as well as liquidation of inventory in branded apparel business, said a

    report by PhillipCapital.

In the March quarter, Raymond opened 22 new stores and closed 14 stores.

Raymond has restructured its top management, splitting its portfolio and separating the strategy and

finance divisions in March.H. Sunder, who was the chief financial officer and headed both finance

and strategy portfolios, will now focus on strategy, while Shivkumar, who joined Raymond last year

fromJet Airways (India) Ltd, was made CFO.

Robert Lobo, who earlier headed the brandsColorPlusand Raymond Premium Apparel is now

president-group apparel at Raymond, and will oversee all the four brands in the branded apparel

business segment such asPark Avenue, Parx, Raymond Premium Apparel and ColorPlus.

The company has initiated a restructuring process for its apparel business structure which involves

getting a distinct strategy for each of its brands. It only helped that the company has put one person

in complete charge, instead of two people heading the brands earlier, said an analyst, who didnt

    want to be named.

Last Friday, Raymond posted an 80.75% drop in net profit for the March-ended quarter from the

year-ago period to Rs.61 lakh, while revenue rose 13% to Rs.1,081.36 crore. The firm said that the

net profit falling to Rs.61 lakh was mainly due to reversal of deferred tax asset provisioning. The fall

in profit came after adjusting for exceptional items and taxes.

A Nomura Equities Research report said the streamlining of Raymonds branded apparel business

includes fine-tuning the communication strategy for each brand and focus on sales channels that

    would help in brand visibility.

One of the key measures that Raymond has taken up in branded apparel business is the

transitioning of Park Avenue from The Raymond Shop (TRS), a retail store format, to exclusive

brand outlets (EBO). Raymond Premium Apparel, the high-end segment will be sold through TRS.
