Project Objectives

• To enhance local participation in biodiversity conservation initiatives

• Create public awareness of the conservation status and biological value of ecosystems

• Restoration of degraded ecological zone

Issues of Concern under the Project

• Habitat degradation (tree felling) at Community Hunting ground

• Seeks to identify and address current underlying causes of biodiversity loss

• Energy sources were LPG, charcoal, firewood, and electricity

• Inadequate alternative sources of energy and livelihood options

• Increased reduction in the communal forest landscape.

Activities • Organise consultative workshop among key stakeholders

• Conduct fauna survey to assess current population of bushbuck

• Communication Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) creation

• Undertake habitat restoration

• Train communities in the production of alternative biomass energy (Briquette production)

LESSON LEARNT SO FAR

• Integration of indigenous traditional knowledge and modern conservation approaches are essential in community conservation projects

• Fostering institutional collaborations between relevant stakeholders, traditional authorities and communities is key

• Existing conflicts can affect project implementation

• Engagement of the youth facilitates and promotes project implementation

• Baseline data is key in identifying important issues of conservation
