What is Restorative Justice?

• Defined by Kimmet Edgar and Tim Newall, restorative justice is:

A distinctive philosophy of justice, with a focus on making amends for the harm done.

A collection of diverse practices that goes beyond the typical prison system rituals of resolving conflicts

Foundations for Restorative Justice

• Work to restore harm to those who have been affected by the crime.

• Those who were harmed and affected by the crime has the opportunity to participate if they wish.

• The government’s role is to preserve a just public order, and the community’s is to create and maintain a just peace.
