The Brooklyn College Foundation Presidential Scholarship program offers entering Brooklyn College freshman with outstanding records $4,000 toward the cost of tuition for up to four years of undergraduate study or until completion of the bachelor’s degree. Recipients are selected based on merit demonstrated by SAT

scores and high school performance. In order to be considered, a student generally must have a combined score of at least 1,200 on the SAT and a 90 percent high school average. Brooklyn College Foundation Presidential Scholarships are made possible by unrestricted contributions to the foundation’s annual fund.

Student Scholarships, Awards, and Prizes Brooklyn College Foundation Presidential Scholarship

Over 70% of Brooklyn College students come from households earning $50,000 or less annually. With an estimated annual tuition of $5,700, over 80% of our students rely on some form of financial aid and nearly 50% must work in order to support costs related to tuition and school. Donations in support of scholarships, awards, and prizes are critical in providing our deserving students with affordable access to excellent higher education. The following pages highlight various scholarships, awards, and prizes established through generous contributions to the Brooklyn College Foundation. “My Presidential Scholarship

lightened my financial burden,

which has allowed me to focus

more on the most important

aspect of school: learning.

This gift inspires me to help

others and to give back to my

community. I hope one day

I will be able to help students

achieve their goals just as this

scholarship is helping me.”

“I went to Brooklyn College because my family members attended.

As graduates of Brooklyn College, my aunt became a professor

in clinical psychology at Drexel in Philadelphia and my cousin

is chief of the diabetes unit at Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Having seen their success and given my interest in economics,

I recognized that studying in New York City put me at the center

for business and Wall Street careers. Brooklyn College prepared

me for my MBA at Harvard Business School, which I attended

with three other Brooklyn graduates.

Giving to the College allows me to repay a 30-year-old debt

while making a positive impact on one person’s life. It has been

gratifying to hear from the students who have been helped by

my scholarship. I know some

alumni overlook giving to

Brooklyn because of its sheer

size, but when you put a

student’s name to the gift it

becomes very personal. For my

family, for the students who

attend today and throughout

the history of Brooklyn College,

it has been an important rung

on the ladder of the American

Dream. I can’t think of a more

worthwhile cause.”

— Mace Blicksilver ’76, donor of the Mace

Blicksilver ’76 Scholarship

“The Essel Foundation Scholarship

is such a help to me, especially

considering my financial situation.

It means that I can continue to

give 110% to my scholastic duties

and not have to worry as much

about taking on multiple jobs

that will eat up my time and

sleep. This scholarship will not

be taken for granted; any and all

time that I have will be placed

upon strengthening my scientific

knowledge that will help me reach

my goals and affect the world in a

way that matters.”

— Alexander Zeldin ’13, recipient of the Essel

Foundation Scholarship

“Now is a challenging time for me, my family,

and my community of Sea Gate, Coney Island, as

Hurricane Sandy destroyed our home, beautiful

shoreline, and washed away our quiet life. Today,

I really understand the true value of life and the

importance of supporting one another. Because of

this, I have a great appreciation for my scholarship.

It will help me overcome obstacles so that my

studies will not be interrupted; this is so important

to me and I am grateful.”

Over the years, the importance of internships has continued to increase. Not only do students with internship experience receive, on average, a 20% higher starting salary, but internships are also directly linked to hiring and corporate recruitment. Despite the growing importance of internships, 50% of

internships are unpaid. This means that Brooklyn College students simply cannot afford participate in these internships without a stipend. To address this issue, many alumni and friends have made restricted donations to the Brooklyn College Foundation to finance internship stipends for students participating in low-paying or non-paying internships. The following internship funds enable deserving Brooklyn College students to attain critical work experience that will leverage their education and lay the groundwork for future employment and success:

Student Internships

“The work I will be doing over the summer is

fundamental to my growth as a student and as

an aspiring writer. I would not have been able to

participate in (this internship) over the summer

break without the Clifford and Frances Friedman

Summer Internship stipend and I am confident

that this will be a pivotal experience for my future

career prospects…I am grateful and extremely

humbled to be the recipient of this year’s award.”

— Nicole Casamento, ’13 recipient of

the Friedman Summer Internship

“I finally received an internship offer that will provide

me with hands-on work experience. At first, I was

concerned that I would not be able to afford to

participate in an unpaid internship, but thanks to

the generous financial support [through the Robert J.

Sisti Memorial Internship fund], I was able to

accept my very first internship at the New York City

Department of Finance, where I will be working in

the Tax Policy and Planning Division…It is my hope

that one day I will be able to assist others in reaching

their career goals as this award has done for me.”

Study Abroad and Research Fellowships

Incorporating study abroad and research experiences into a college education helps students earn credit toward their degree, strengthens their professional résumé, improves their foreign language skills, and broadens their perspective on the world. Faculty who pursue research and scholarship overseas bring these experiences back to

the classroom. In an effort to expand and deepen international educational and research opportunities, and to make them more available to those in financial need, generous alumni and friends have established the following funds to provide Brooklyn College students and faculty with the necessary support to study and perform research outside of Brooklyn College and, in many cases, abroad:

“My experience was life-changing. Through the

Furman Fellows Travel program, I was able to do

field work in Barbuda with talented scientists and

researchers. I enjoyed working with them so much

that I plan to go on for my masters in Sustainability

Science and Education at the CUNY Graduate

Center and from there, to get my PhD. in anthropology.

I delight in sharing my experience with the Brooklyn

College community—and beyond—on the benefits

of cultural exchange programs to promote

global citizenship.”

the Furman Fellowship

experiences in an academic setting. Working

alongside accomplished investigators, has allowed

me to expand on and enhance my research skills,

teaching me priceless lessons that I will carry

well into my future as a scientist.”

Lectureships

Generous donors and friends have established the following funds to provide financial incentives to attract scholars and practitioners who are leaders in their fields to visit and host lecture series at Brooklyn College: “I intend to use my award to study the Spanish

language and civilization in Salamanca, Spain.

Languages are extraordinarily important to me,

being that I am also from a country outside the

United States. The travel and cultural experiences

I hope to acquire during this trip will hone my

ability for communication and understanding. I am

sincerely grateful for this award, which will allow

me to further expand my boundaries and apply

what I have spent so many years learning in the

classroom.” — Nikita Mogar ’15, 2013 recipient of

the Christoph M. Kimmich Award

for the BC Honors Academy.

“Through the generous support of the Wolff-Ravenal

Art Travel Award, I will travel to Paris this year to

recreate 10-20 images from my family photo album

using strangers and hired actors. Working with the

actors, I will create tableaus of the moments leading

up to when the photos were taken, the photos

themselves, and the imagined moments after the

images were taken. The performances will be

documented both in video and in final realization as

a photography instillation. I would never have been

able to travel to Paris to partake in a project such

as this if it weren’t for the award I am receiving.

I am grateful for this opportunity.”

— Christina Malfitano’15, 2013 recipient of the

Wolff-Ravenal Art Travel Award.Ted Gellar-Goad, 2014 recipient of the Arlene Fromchuck Feili ’65 Memorial Lecture

How You Can Support Brooklyn CollegeThe Brooklyn College Foundation relies on the generosity of individuals, foundations, and corporations to help further the college’s mission of providing high-quality, affordable education to our students. There are many ways that donors can support our work.

The Annual FundGifts to the annual fund provide critical unrestricted operating supports making it possible for the foundation to respond to the immediate and evolving needs of Brooklyn College. Common uses of annual fund dollars include student scholarships, internship stipends and travel abroad support, funding for faculty research, as well as school improvements. Unrestricted annual fund gifts are essential and benefit more than 16,000 students each year.

The Boylan SocietyThe Boylan Society is the Brooklyn College Foundation’s monthly giving program. When you join the Boylan Society, you authorize the foundation to receive a monthly tax-deductible gift from your checking account or by credit card. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide dependable, enduring, and reliable support to your alma mater. You will no longer need to be concerned with renewal payments or reminder mailings. And since automatic monthly gifts do not require outreach efforts to secure, they are the most efficient way to sustain the level of academic excellence at Brooklyn College.

Corporations and FoundationsThe Brooklyn College Foundation works with faculty and college leadership to identify, build and steward relationships with corporations and foundations to ensure long-term and mutually beneficial partnerships. We aim to understand the needs of corporations and foundations and connect them with appropriate solutions at Brooklyn College. With a world-class faculty, a diverse and talented student body and strong academic and co-curricular programs, Brooklyn College offers significant investment opportunities.

Establishing a Restricted FundA restricted fund helps to meet the needs of Brooklyn College and our students while reflecting the specific interests or desires of a donor. Restricted funds may support student scholarships, awards and travel stipends, as well as faculty research and endowed professorships. Establishing and naming a restricted fund can be a special way to honor or memorialize a loved one’s interests or accomplishments, honor a former student and/or faculty member or encourage students in a particular academic area. The Brooklyn College Foundation welcomes donations to establish and name new restricted funds, as well as donations of any size in support of already existing restricted funds.

Gifts OnlineIt is now easier than ever to make a donation to Brooklyn College. Just log on to the Brooklyn College Foundation website, www.brooklyncollegefoundation.org, and use our secure connection to make a tax-deductible gift with your credit or debit card with a MasterCard, American Express, Visa, or Discover logo. We also accept automatic fund transfers from your checking or savings account.

The Legacy Society: Planned Gifts Members of the Legacy Society share our vision of academic excellence for future generations by making a provision for the college in their estate planning. The Brooklyn College Foundation offers several future-oriented investment opportunities, including charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts or life insurance. Legacy Society members may also make planned gifts in the form of a bequest.

Matching Gifts: Double the impact of Your DonationIf your company matches employee contributions to higher education, you may be able to seek a match for your gift to the Brooklyn College Foundation. In order to find out if your company provides matching gifts please visit our online matching gift search engine on the donate page of the foundations website for further instructions or check with www.brooklyncollegefoundation.org. Your human resources office can provide specific instructions about how to seek a company matching gift.

Naming OpportunitiesBrooklyn College offers a wide spectrum of naming opportunities. Individuals or groups of donors may select from a menu of naming options ranging from commemorative bricks in front of our new West Quad Center, to benches near our beloved lily pond, to classrooms or lecture halls around campus. These are very special opportunities to leave behind a legacy at the college while contributing to the success of future Brooklyn College students.

Tributes and MemorialsThe Brooklyn College Foundation Tribute and Memorial Program was created in response to alumni requests as a means to offer special recognition to those who have made a difference in their lives. A donation to the Tribute and Memorial Program gives you the opportunity to honor a loved one, friend, business associate or caregiver. Gifts have been made to commemorate special occasions, including birthdays, anniversaries or retirement. The program is a meaningful way to express feelings of remembrance or gratitude.
