MECHANICAL AND PROCESS ENGINEERING
RESULTS F CUSED DESIGN
“ Design is not
just what it
looks like &
feels like.
Design is how
it works.

Results Focused Design
We want to help you get really
useful results. We don’t just
produce a report telling you
what to do and stop there. We
listen to what you want and
then look for ways to help you
achieve it. We provide real
support, whether it’s for a new
product, process or machine.
We stay focused on moving
your project forward, allowing
you to get on with other things.
We produce useful stuff, not
just the slick images but also
the detailed drawings that allow
the manufacturing process to
begin.
Attention to Detail
It’s one thing to come up with a
concept of how a solution might
work, but it’s another to detail
how it works in practice. What
size does it need to be, what
material should be used, what
power output is required?
These features and more are
all in the details we produce.
Many good concepts have
failed miserably because they
have been poorly developed.
Don’t skimp on the
development phase; give us a
call to find out how we can
help.
Sensible Approach
Many engineers and designers
want to be the next James
Dyson. However, it took Dyson
over 5000 prototypes and 5
years before he got his first
Dual Cyclone vacuum product
working. Most of our customers
don’t have that kind of time or
money so we take a slightly
different approach. We prefer to
look at what’s already out there
and at the technology we
already have experience of. We
take inspiration from others,
often your competitors, and
combine it with our engineering
know-how and just enough
creativity to generate a
workable solution. That way,
the risks and costs are
minimised for everyone. Of
course, if you can afford it, we
can also follow the Dyson
approach but it may take a bit
longer!
www.solveengineering.com
Often starting with no more than
a concept idea from the client,
we engineer a workable solution
taking into account various
aspects such as the function,
ergonomics, maintenance,
machine lifecycle & available
finance. Initially producing
concept design proposals, we
then utilise our CAD Services to
develop the design into a series
of fully detailed production
drawings.
MACHINE DESIGN
Whether it’s a one off special purpose factory automation system or a commercial machine, we feel it’s important that the machine designer is experienced and familiar with the relevant technology. With a proven background in
mechanical engineering, we are
well placed to help customers with
industrial machinery design.
We regularly design machines
incorporating industrial
components such as
pneumatics, hydraulics, servo
motors, pumps, bearings,
couplings, slide guides and
many other items familiar to the
industrial machinery engineer.
With experience in a wide range of
sectors, from medical device
machines to agricultural
machinery, Solve has the ability to
provide mechanical design
expertise, whatever your industry.

CAD SERVICES
Some of the types of drawings we regularly create include:
Fully annotated general assembly and layout drawings including
bills of materials
Weldment drawings including cut lists and weld details
Precision part drawings with full geometrical tolerances
Sheet metal drawings with flat pattern development
Process and instrumentation line drawings
ENGINEERING DRAWING SOLVE uses both Solidworks
and AutoCAD software to
create technical CAD
drawings covering the
entire spectrum of
mechanical and process
engineering.
Our engineering drawings are
normally prepared and checked in
line with BS 8888.
3D MODELLING
As well as orthographic views we
can easily produce section views,
detail views and isometric views.
Solve can export drawings in a
variety of formats including PDF,
so anyone in your project team
can open an electronic drawing
without needing special CAD
software. Additionally, in-house
large format printing means
drawings up to A1 in size can be
printed when required.
We have created literally
thousands of drawings for a
diverse range of projects over
many years.

CAD SERVICES
We use Solidworks to
generate a virtual three
dimensional “solid model”
of your product or
machine.
The various parts are modelled
individually and then assembled
together on the CAD system in
exactly the way they would be in
reality. The virtual model can be
rotated, sectioned and tested in
various ways on-screen to
ensure it meets your design
requirements. Necessary design
changes can be made with
minimum effort at this stage of
the development process.
3D MODELLING
We use Simulation finite
element analysis (FEA)
software to undertake design
stress analysis. By applying
various load cases to the 3D
CAD model of your machine we
can give you an indication of
how your product is likely to
perform in service. This helps to
optimise the design for both
strength and weight. The
example opposite shows FEA
being used to highlight stress
concentrations in the connecting
rod from the test rig assembly
shown above.

DESIGN ANALYSIS
We communicate the design to
you for display on your own
computer in a variety of formats
including e-drawings and Adobe
pdf. Only when we are sure that
everyone is satisfied with the
assembled design do we
progress to the creation of the
detailed manufacturing
drawings.

CAD SERVICES
Whilst 3D CAD is great for machine
design we prefer to use 2D
AutoCAD for factory layouts. From
survey measurements we create a
scaled floor plan for your building
and a footprint for the various
individual items of existing and new
equipment. With this information
we can easily move plant around
on the drawing to show you how a
new production layout would look
on plan. Finally, by producing
setting-out drawings, your
contractors and engineers have
accurate information to work from.
2D FACTORY LAYOUTS
PROCESS DRAWINGS For the process industries
we often produce a special
type of graphical symbolic
drawing known as a Process
and Instrumentation
Drawing (P&ID).
These drawings show all the
information necessary for a process
engineer to validate the process
design. Pumps, valves, pipework,
fittings and transducers are all
examples of things that regularly
appear on our drawings. We
normally work to BS 1553 but can
work to other standards if you
require.

PROCESS ENGINEERING
Sam Paul, our Principal
Engineer, worked for
over 10 years in the food
manufacturing industry
before establishing
SOLVE.
We regularly help with tender
management, installation
issues and commissioning
on site.
Solve assists with the design of
factory layouts, process
systems, cleaning systems
such as CIP sets and the
design of hygienic equipment.
Plant surveys and investigation
reports are both examples of
complementary services we
also provide to customers on
an on-going basis.
WE HAVE SOME OF THE
INDUSTRY’S MAJOR PLAYERS AS
KEY CLIENTS.

Using our CAD services, we
regularly create Process and
Instrumentation Diagrams. We
often assist with plant sizing and
other aspects of the
specification development for
your new plant. To help
implement your project, Solve
prepares performance
specifications, functional design
specifications and tender
documentation.

The “ASHVAC” is a conceptual new
product we’ve developed for the clean
and safe removal of warm ashes from
a fireplace/stove. The ASHVAC
shows a sample of our design
capability from conceptual sketches
through design analysis to photo
realistic product visualisation and
manufacturing details.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
If you have a product that
needs improved or perhaps
just an idea for a new
product, then it is likely we
can help.
The SOLVE design process starts
with defining the desired project
outcomes and then incorporates all
the relevant design stages
appropriate to your project
requirement. We have the capability
to assist you right up to product
launch. Alternatively the process can
finish where you (or your budget)
dictate.
To further support the development
of your product we will often use
the industrial links in our
manufacturing and development
network to generate rapid
prototypes and early production
products. This approach allows us
to assist in product development for
a range of companies from small
start-ups to major multinational
household brand names.
The sketches shown were created
using Rhino, the design analysed
using Solidworks Premium
Simulation, and the photo realistic
renderings and design drawings
created using Solidworks. To help
visualise their products further our
clients sometimes get us to
generate animations and
promotional/ technical videos.
