Erasmus+ Project 2015 - 2017

Water is life – Let´s preserve it

During the first project year the German Comenius - class 10c has dealt with the endangerment of Waterbodies because of microplastic and plastic waste in their „politics and Economics“ lessons (teacher: Susanne Bothmann) . They created a questionnaire about plastic, which was translated in the English lessons (teacher: Silke Jennings). In the following period the questionnaire was filled in by a different number of students from all partner schools: Bulgaria 53 France 4 Germany 213 Italy 22 Sweden 35 The Comenius- class 10c from Hofheim analyzed the data, made the diagrams during math lessons (teacher: Philipp Fischer) and wrote comments. The results can be seen here. We would like to express our thanks to everyone on the project. We really appreciate your dedicated work which has made ERASMUS+ a success and an unforgettable experience.

Erasmus+-Project: Water is life – Let´s preserve it!

1. Have you ever heard anything about microplastic? O yes O no

2. What do you think? Where can we find plasic particles?

no maybe yes

- in the sewage of households

- in rivers

- in the North Sea

- in the oceans

3. Encircle all the products, which you think contain microplastic (very tiny plastic

balls).

cosmetics wall paint shower gel detergent

tooth paste cooling liquid pan coated with teflon

4. Can plastic products (plastic cups, plastic bottles, plastic bags for groceries....) endager the health of humans?O I think so O maybe a little O I don`t think so

5. What do you think? How long does it take for a plastic bottle to beak up and dissolve?

O 10 months O 7 months O 80 years

O 150 years O 250 years O 450 years

6. Do you think that plastic has reached the food chain? O yes O no7. Do you think that plastic has got into our bodies via this way? O yes O no

Have you ever heard anything about plastic islands (accumulations of plastic garbage) in the oceans? O yes O no

8. How do you use plastic bags?O I get a plastic bag for every purchase.O I try to reuse plastic bags.

9. Think about all the goods and products made out of plastic in your household. Do you think that you can live without plastic?- I can live with distinctly less plastic. O yes O no- I can live without any plastic. O yes O no

In Sweden most people know about it and in France very few. Although microplastics is a big problem, which may endanger our health, many people still don’t know about the problem. This shows us that we have to inform more people about microplastics.

Here, we summarized the results of all participants of all countries. The questionnaire shows that most people know about microplastics in the oceans. Concerning the sewage of households, half of the people asked weren’t sure or said that there is no microplastic.

The task was to encircle all the products, which we think

contain microplastic.

Cooling liquid, tooth paste and wall paint have not been containing microplastic for a few years. So many participants from all nations are wrong in this point. This shows, that they do not have sufficient actual knowledge.

Both cosmetics and shower gel have microplastic as an ingredient. While many people know about its presence in cosmetics, it is not common knowledge that there is microplastic in shower gel.

Can plastic products endanger the health of humans?

When we evaluated the questionnaire, we realized that German people lack education concerning plastic products endangering humans’ health. 73 % of Germans do not know that plastic damages the body and causes allergies, disturbance of growth, diabetes, infertility, heart diseases and cancer. The other countries already realize the danger of plastic. It should be a wake-up call to get informed about microplastic.

Durability of plastic

Every day we use plastic. It’s everywhere in our lives and it

seems impossible to live without it.

So it’s obvious, that we produce huge amounts of plastic garbage. But where is the plastic going after we threw it away?

It gets burnt, toxic residual products arise BUT, burning it is extremely expensive... So it’s thrown into the oceans, which causes major

damage to the whole environment and all the creatures on earth

What do you think? How long does it take for a plastic bottle to break up and dissolve?

Most people thought 250 years was the answer. The truth is, that plastic bottles needs at least 450 years to break up and dissolve. During these years it’s threatening our planet’s environment and affecting the health of all the creatures on earth by polluting the water and entering the food chain.

Do you think that plastic has already got into our foodchain?

Most of the interviewed Italians think, that plastic has already reached our foodchain (64%), but a significant number of people think that, it hasn’t (36%). Every interviewed Swede thinks that plastic has already reached our foodchain. In Germany plenty of pupils are right with the statement, that plastic has reached our foodchain (80%). However, 20% think that plastic hasn’t reached our foodchain. Bulgaria has nearly the same result (83% Yes/ 17% No). The result in France is not representative, because only 4 people participated in the survey. Most of the interviewed people know about microplastics in our foodchain.

Do you think that plastic has got into our bodies via this way?

Have you ever heard anything about plastic island (accumulations of plastic garbage) in the oceans?

A big majority knows about the problem of having plastic in

our bodies Sweden, Bulgaria and Sweden are well informed In Italy and France, it is a necessity to make the problem

more known There is no country where the students are ignorant about

this problem Andreas Blawert, Tim Reimus

HOW DO YOU USE PLASTIC BAGS?

The survey shows us that every country tries to reuse their plastic bags at least to the same amount that they use new ones. We thought that there were more people who used new plastic bags. For example in a lot of stores, people get a new plastic bag for every purchase they make.

Anna Baukholt, Mila Rangoonwala

In general we can say that 69%

of the people, who participated

in our survey, try reusing their

plastic bags. And only 26% use

new ones. The result makes us

very happy because it shows

that more than a third is aware

of environmental pollution by

plastic bags.

Do you think you can live without plastic?

Here you can see the result of our Erasmus+ project survey. I think you agree that most of you can live with less but not without plastic. This is the fact, because plastic is a nearly indispensible part of our life.
