Summary

After getting his degree at the Technical University of Delft Steef Buijs started a government career, working at three levels: city, province and state. He was leading regional planning project teams, was in charge of urban master planning for the City of Rotterdam, and was responsible for the conception and implementation of national urbanisation policy for The Netherlands. While working for the national government he contributed to GtoG cooperation with Indonesia, Bangladesh and Russia, working on master planning assignments for Jakarta, Surabaya, Dhaka and St Petersburg. In 2005 he started his own consultancy firm, specialising in three fields: (1) urban master planning (including urban heritage redevelopment) and regional development planning and establishment of agglomeration governance; (2) water management and flood protection; and (3) metropolitan food provision. For urban master planning and regional development planning he worked, among others, with the World Bank. For water management and flood protection he worked mainly with the Dutch Government. For metropolitan food provision he worked with Wageningen University and Research (WUR) from 2006 until present, serving as their leading ‘hardware’ design specialist for Agropark development. Summary

Peter is co-designer of sustainable development of metropolitan food clusters and agroparks. PhD in Agricultural Sciences, MSc in Ecology. Landscape ecologist. Spatial planner, Process facilitator. Since 2000 Peter has been leading co-design trajectories of Metropolitan Foodclusters in Europe, China, India, Mexico, South Africa, Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Qatar, Colombia and Brasil. A metropolitan food cluster is a tailor made network of modern production and processing of feed and food in agroparks and storage and logistics in consolidation centers. The focus is not only on technology, spatial planning and infrastructure but also on business development, governmental involvement and on training and education of future staff. Peter is also being frequently engaged as facilitator of complex design processes. From 1978 onwards he has been working as landscape ecologist in scientific research and as a planner in the State Forest Agency and the National Planning Agency in the Netherlands. Peter was integral manager of the Landscape Department in Wageningen University & Research with 240 people scientific staff between 1996 and 2004. Arjen Simons is specialist in Logistics and Fresh networks. He is currently owner of Seamless Innovation BV. Arjen was director of the business unit Fresh, Food & Chains(FFC) within Wageningen Food & Biobased Research. Arjen is well known in the design, the organisation and the operational management of production and distribution supply chains for the various agricultural sectors both in the Netherlands and abroad. This research is done both for individual companies and for public or semi-public organisations representing these sectors. In that capacity did work on big research and development projects for Shell, Schiphol, multiple TNO’s, the Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) and multiple companies on the subjects of planning, scheduling and artificial intelligence. 1990 till 1998 I was invited via one of the mutual projects to transfer to one of the Wageningen institutes for applied research (Agrotechnology Institute for short ATO)) to fulfil a senior research position. That did transfer in 1995 into a management position 1998 till 2012 Director of business unit Fresh, Food & Chains (FFC). This business unit was one of the two business units of the Agrotechnology & Food Scientific Group in Wageningen UR. This business unit did consist of around 120 employees (100 FTE’s) with a turnover of around 12 million Euros yearly. While the other business unit focus on product and product innovations, the business unit FFC did focus on innovations in business processes. It covers the whole range from basic process control applications up to the configuration and operation of complete supply chains up to the marketing in the supermarket. On a yearly base this business unit has a customer base of around 70 companies varying from consortia of growers, the Greenery, KLM CARGO, Maersk, Kappa, Mona, Stegeman,

Johma, up to Ahold and Jumbo to name a few. In 30 to 40 percent of these projects he was playing an active role in the acquisition of these projects and in the project execution itself was in most cases a member of the steering committee. Summery

Since 2000 I have worked within the department of Environmental Sciences Wageningen University and Research, the Netherlands, team Regional Development and Spatial Use as senior researcher Landscape ecology. Work focused on regional planning, action research , participatory process management and master planning of Metropolitan Food Clusters. This action research in cluster development, deals with a new organisation of agriculture and food production, with Agroparks and Rural Transformation and smart Agro Logistics as an integrated new design of foodsupply chains. This work on large scale high value, clustered agriculture and food production is one of the innovative solutions for sustainable development on those spots of the world where there is dire need for better ways of producing and processing food. The last 5 years I have focused on climate smart innovations as Climate KIC innovation lead and manager of the land and water management and engineering platform on behalf of Wageningen University and Research.

Summary

Xi is an urban and rural planner. MSc in Urban Environmental Management, BSc in Urban and Rural planning. Spatial planning, project coordinator. Since 2016 Xi has been intensively engaged in the sustainable development of Metropolitan Food Clusters and Agroparks as spatial planner and hardware designer in China, Qatar and Brazil. A Metropolitan Food Cluster is a tailor-made network of modern production and processing of feed and food in Agroparks and storage and logistics in consolidation centres. The focus is not only on technology, spatial planning and infrastructure but also on business development, governmental involvement and on training and education of future staff. Since Xi stared with her Master in Wageningen University & Research in 2014, she has been proactively exploring the integration of spatial planning in rural and agriculture development and food production. Her Master Thesis was a research on exploring the impacts of urban planning on the development of urban agriculture in China, and how urban planning can facilitate the sustainable agriculture and food production in the Chinese context. Xi is also being frequently engaged, as a knowledge coordinator, in transdisciplinary, international, and complex metropolitan food clusters and agroparks design and planning processes. Moreover, she has been intensively conducting project acquisition, steering acquisition process, and coordinating in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Madagascar, Uganda, and Paraguay. Education

Xi was the project coordinator for the communication between the Chinese team and Dutch team. 11 2017 Qatar: Feasibility study for providing food security for 100,000 consumers: integrated agropark design aims for providing food security for 100,000 consumers in Qatar. Xi was the hardware and spatial planner. 12 2016 - 03 2017 Brazil: Assessment Sustainable Development Production and Quality: This project is aiming to sustainably develop the most efficient and intensive dairy production system worldwide. Over 10 experts from different fields related to the project participated or were interviewed in order to achieve sustainable development and guarantee high product quality. Xi was one of the editors of the report and the spatial designer. 05-09 2016 the Netherlands: Research project for the Environmental Science Group of Wageningen University & Research (Alterra). The main task was to evaluate the Metropolitan Food Clusters (MFC) projects in China from the Chinese planning perspective. Recommendations were included. 12 2015 Paris food futures A workshop conducted under the background of the COP21 Climate Conference in Paris, which was initiated and organized by Amsterdam Metropolitan Solutions (AMS). Case studies, scenario-making, and visionary were included. 06 2015 European Workshop It was a two-month consultancy project for a sustainable fish consumption campaign in Malta. The team that consisted 30 international and transdisciplinary members were required to conduct evaluation, field work, report writing, offer suggestions for improving in two month. 09-12 2013 Urban-Rural Planning and Designing Institution of Yunnan Province Mainly worked on the Master Plan of Ximeng, which is a minority autonomous county in Yunnan Province.
