Al continuar nuestra conversación acerca de la oración en la Iglesia, la oración litúrgica, deseo compartir tres conceptos y principios fun-damentales que pueden ayudarnos a entrar correctamente en la ora-ción litúrgica: la oración comunitaria de la liturgia, la distinción entre liturgia y devoción popular y el estilo artístico y expresión simbólica de la liturgia. En primer lugar, la oración litúrgica es la oración de un cuerpo comu-nitario y con eso no me refiero solo a los que están presentes física-mente. La oración del cuerpo litúrgico consiste en todo el cuerpo de
los fieles de la Iglesia universal en la tierra y en el cielo. La litúrgia no es celebrada por el individuo sino por el cuerpo de los fieles que se extiende más allá de los límites del espacio y el tiempo. "La liturgia no dice" yo ", sino" nosotros ", a menos que la acción particular que se realiza requiera específicamente el número singular. El objetivo principal de la liturgia no consiste la expresión de la reverencia del individuo hacia Dios ". (" El espíritu de la liturgia ", de Romano Guardini). Yo no dejo de ser yo mismo cuando estoy rezando litúrgicamente. Aporto mis experiencias y preocupaciones pero debo estar dispuesto a renunciar a mis propias ideas y a mi propia forma de ser y continuar liderando la liturgia: rezar con los demás. “Por lo tanto, los requerimientos de la liturgia se pueden resumir en una sola palabra: humildad. . . “Esta consis-te en todos los fieles más que en su mero cuerpo pasivamente unidos por un sistema de convicciones y regulaciones si-milares sino activamente unidos por un principio vital y fundamental común a todos ellos. Ese principio es Cristo mis-mo. Su vida es nuestra y estamos incorporados en Él. Nosotros somos Su Cuerpo, Corpus Christi Mysticum. La fuerza activa que gobierna esta unidad viviente injertando al individuo en ella y otorgándole una participación en su commu-nion, preservando este derecho para él, es el Espíritu Santo. Cada católico es una célula de este organismo vivo o un miembro de este cuerpo "." ("El espíritu de la liturgia", de Romano Guardini). En esto nos lleva a un segundo pensamiento: la oración litúrgica es distinta a las devociones populares y privadas. Las devociones privadas, si bien pueden ser populares en varias partes del mundo o en diversos momentos, no se consideran "plegaria universal". Hablan con un individuo particular a un tiempo más determinado. Para entrar en la oración del cuerpo comunitario debemos actuar conscientemente y sostenidos por el pensamiento. Nuestra entrada en la oración li-túrgica debe mantenernos en contacto con todo el Cuerpo, no simplemente con los de una devoción privada particular. Por lo tanto, el lenguaje es un lenguaje comunitario y las oraciones de la liturgia se rigen y se entrelazan con la teología dogmática. La liturgia nos enseña y nos forma en una teología y espiritualidad de comunión. Este sentimiento de pensa-miento conciente no niega la importancia del corazón del individuo. El corazón, sin embargo deberá ser guiado, apoyado y purificado por la mente. “La emoción brilla en la profundidad de la liturgia pero arde como el corazón de un volcán que se enciende furiosamente y cuya cima se destaca clara y serena junto al cielo". ("El espíritu de la liturgia", de Ro-mano Guardini). Un tercer pensamiento nos trae a un tema sobre el que prediqué unas semanas atrás: la belleza. Se puede decir que cada forma de arte, en la medida en que comunica auténticamente lo que realmente es, tiene un estilo. Ese estilo gobierna otras expresiones. Algunos estilos se esfuerzan por expresar lo que es particular y otros se esfuerzan por expresar cosas que son como universalmente significativas. La liturgia expresa lo último. Por ejemplo, el ocio estuvo una vez de moda, pero no creo que nadie diría que con el se habla de una belleza universal que sobrevive a través de los tiempos como po-demos decir de una sinfonía de Bach. . No es la expre-sión directa de ningún tipo particular de disposición espiritual, ya sea en su lenguaje e ideas, o movimientos, acciones y los materiales que emplea. ("El espíritu de la liturgia", de Romano Guardini.) Cuando entramos en una oración litúrgica, humildemente, nos unimos en comunión con el Cuerpo de la Iglesia- el Cuerpo Místico de Cristo. Seguimos siendo nosotros mismos pero gobernados por normas más universales que nos ayu-dan a permanecer en una sola voz de oración, la voz del Gran Sacerdote Jesucristo. Entre esas normas hay símbolos y estilos que abarcan siglos. Por lo tanto en la oración litúrgica con corazón humilde, pensamiento y teología, nos unimos con todo el cuerpo de Cristo, con todos aquellos de siglos pasados, con los que están actualmente presentes alrededor del mundo y por todos aquellos que nos han precedido marcados con el signo de la fe.

In continuing our conversation on the prayer of the Church, liturgical prayer, I wish to share three foundational concepts and principles that can assist us in entering rightly into liturgical prayer: the corporate prayer of liturgy; the distinction between liturgy and popular devotion; and the ar-tistic style and symbolic expression of the liturgy. First and foremost, liturgical prayer is the prayer of a corporate body – and by that I do not just mean those physically present. The liturgical en-tity consists of the whole body of the faithful, the Church universal – on earth and in heaven. The liturgy is not celebrated by the individual but by the body of the faithful reaching out beyond the bounds of space and time. “The liturgy does not say ‘I,’ but ‘We,’ unless the particular action which is being performed specifically requires the singular number. The prima-
ry aim of liturgy is not the expression of the individual’s reverence for God.” (“The Spirit of the Liturgy,” by Romano Guardini.)
I do not cease to be myself when I enter liturgical prayer, however. I bring my experiences and concerns to it. But I must be willing to renounce my own ideas and my own way and follow the lead of the liturgy – praying with oth-ers. “Therefore, the requirements of the liturgy can be summed up in one word, humility. . . “It does consist of the faithful, then; but it is more than the mere body of these, passively held together by a system of similar convictions and regulations. The faithful are actively united by a vital and fundamental principle common to them all. That principle is Christ Himself; His life is ours; we are incorporated in Him; we are His Body, Corpus Christi Mysti-cum. The active force which governs this living unity, grafting the individual onto it, granting him a share in its fellowship and preserving this right for him, is the Holy Ghost. Every individual Catholic is a cell of this living organism or a member of this body.”” (“The Spirit of the Liturgy,” by Romano Guardini.). In this we are brought to a second thought: liturgical prayer is distinct from popular and private devotions. Private devotions, while they may be popular in various parts of the world or in various times, are not considered “universal prayer.” They speak to a more particular individual and time. In order to enter the prayer of the corpo-rate body we must act consciously and be sustained by thought. Our entering into liturgical prayer must keep us in touch with the whole Body, not simply those of a particular private devotion. Thus the language is a communal language, and the prayers of the liturgy are governed by and interwoven with dogmatic theology. The liturgy teaches and forms us in a theology and spirituality of communion. This sense of conscious thought does not deny the importance of the individual heart, though. . The heart, however, must be guided, supported, and purified by the mind. “Emotion glows in its [liturgy’s] depths, but it smolders merely, like the fiery heart of a volcano, whose summit stands out clear and serene against the sky.” (“The Spirit of the Liturgy,” by Romano Guardini.). A third thought brings us back to a topic upon which I preached a few weeks ago: Beauty. Each art form, to the extent that it authentically communicates what it really is, can be said to have a style. That style governs further expressions. Some styles endeavor to express that which is particular, and others endeavor to express things that are universally significant. The liturgy expresses the latter. For example: the leisure suite was once in style – but I don’t think anyone would say that it speaks to a universal beauty that reaches over times, as, say, a symphony by Bach. “Now the liturgy – at any rate, as far as the greater part of its range is concerned – has style in the stricter sense of the word. It is not the direct expression of any particular type of spiritual disposition, either in its lan-guage and ideas, or movements, actions and the materials which it employs . . . we shall always find, within the liturgy, that the medium of spiritual expression, whether it consists of words, gestures, colors or materials, is to a certain degree divested of its singleness of purpose, intensified, tranquilized, and given universal currency.” (“The Spirit of the Liturgy,” by Romano Guardini.) It spans centuries. When we enter into liturgical prayer, we humbly surrender ourselves to the cooperate communion of the body of the Church – the Mystical Body of Christ. We remain ourselves, but we are governed by more universal norms – which assist us in remaining one voice in prayer – the voice of the High Priest, Jesus Christ. Among those norms are symbols and styles that span centuries. Thus, in liturgical prayer, with humble heart, thought, theology, and style of expression, we are united with the whole Body of Christ – with all from past centuries; with those currently around currently around the world, and with those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith.
