Winthrop Arcade is one of the most distinct retail establishments located in the heart of Cork city.
This building, with an L-shaped floor plan, is accessed by two entrances, one on the north side of Oliver
Plunkett Street and the other on west side of Winthrop Street. The property forms part of the retail core
of the city centre on the pedestrian street of Winthrop Street and the pedestrian priority zone of
Oliver Plunkett Street opposite the GPO.
Winthrop Arcade comprises a ground floor retail mall with seven retail outlets in total with first and
second floor stockroom and toilet facilities contained in a mainly single storey part two and part three
storey building. The Arcade’s three-storied timbered facades, pitched gable roofs and arcaded entrances
make it one of the most distinctive buildings on Oliver Plunkett Street. The interior of the
Winthrop Arcade is finished with glass roof and tiled limestone floor. Notable for its striking Tudor- revival
facades and indoor architecture, this shopping arcade was officially opened in1926.
The Arcade was one of the first shopping malls opened in Ireland and survives today in its original
design and purpose. Existing occupiers within the Arcade include Monreal, Salingers Bespoke,
Madison Lane and Golden Scissors.
