Fun Fact We’re pretty sure Labradorscame from the island of Newfoundland, and many experts believe that theNewfoundland breed was developed inneighboring Labrador! By ourcalculations, there are 10 times as manyLabradors in North America than thereare people living in Labrador andNewfoundland.

LABRADOR RETRIEVERThe Labrador Retriever has been the most popular AKC breed in the United Statesevery year for the past 25 years. Their origins have been traced to the St. John’s dog, named for the capital city of the Canadian province  “Newfoundland and Labrador.”The St. John’s was developed from imported European dogs for fishing and hunting onthe island of Newfoundland in the 18th century. During the 19th century St John’swere bred in England and developed into the Labradors we know and love. Labradorswere recognized as a breed by the British Kennel Club in 1903 and by the AKC in 1917.With their friendly dispositions and weatherproof build, they are terrific family dogsand outdoor companions. Most Labradors are very active with an appetite to match, and need plenty of exercise. Labradors often love to swim. Their double-coatedweather-resistant fur can cause heavy shedding. Great hunting dogs and popularhousehold companions, Labrador Retrievers are also employed as guide dogs andsearch-and-rescue dogs.

MATERNAL LINE

Through Prince Silver of Tender Oak Ranch’s mitochondrial DNA we can trace his mother’s ancestry back to where dogs and peoplefirst became friends. This map helps you visualize the routes that his ancestors took to your home. Their story is described belowthe map.

HAPLOGROUP: A1a

A1a is the most common maternal lineage among Westerndogs. This lineage traveled from the site of dog domesticationin Central Asia to Europe along with an early dog expansionperhaps 10,000 years ago. It hung around in European villagedogs for many millennia. Then, about 300 years ago, some ofthe prized females in the line were chosen as the foundingdogs for several dog breeds. That set in motion a hugeexpansion of this lineage. It's now the maternal lineage of theoverwhelming majority of Mastiffs, Labrador Retrievers andGordon Setters. About half of Boxers and less than half of Shar-Pei dogs descend from the A1a line. It is also common acrossthe world among village dogs, a legacy of Europeancolonialism.

HAPLOTYPE: A17

Part of the large A1a haplogroup, this common haplotype isfound in village dogs across the globe. Among breed dogs, wefind it most frequently in Labrador Retrievers, Boxers, andMastiffs.

PATERNAL LINE

Through Prince Silver of Tender Oak Ranch’s Y chromosome we can trace his father’s ancestry back to where dogs and people firstbecame friends. This map helps you visualize the routes that his ancestors took to your home. Their story is described below themap.

HAPLOGROUP: A2b

A2b appears to have split a few times in succession, whichmeans that some of the Central Asian male ancestors of thislineage went their separate ways before their respective Ychromosomes made their rounds. There is not much diversityin this lineage, meaning that it has only begun to take offrecently. Two iconic breeds, the Dachshund and Bloodhound, represent this lineage well. Over half of Rottweilers are A2b, asare the majority of Labrador Retrievers and Cavalier KingCharles Spaniels. While A2a is restricted mostly to East Asia, this paternal line is also found among European breeds.

HAPLOTYPE: Hc.10

Part of the A2b haplogroup, this haplotype occurs mostcommonly in Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Curly-CoatedRetrievers, Dandie Dinmont Terriers, and village dogsthroughout the world.

CLINICAL TRAITSThese clinical genetic traits can inform clinical decisions and diagnoses. These traits do not predict a disease state or increasedrisk for disease. We currently assess one clinical trait: Alanine Aminotransferase Activity.

Alanine Aminotransferase Activity result: Normal

Prince Silver of Tender Oak Ranch has two normal alleles at ALT.

More information on Alanine Aminotransferase Activity: Known to be highly expressed in liver cells, activity levels of alanine aminotransferase, or ALT, is a common value on most bloodchemistry panels and is known to be a sensitive measure of liver health. Dogs with two ancestral G alleles show "normal" activity.Dogs that have one or two copies of the derived A allele may have lower resting levels of ALT activity, known as "low normal". If yourdog's result is "low normal" then when a blood chemistry panel is being interpreted the values that you and your veterinarianconsider "normal" may need to be adjusted. Please note that neither a "normal" nor a "low normal" result for this predicts a diseasestate or increased risk for liver disease. Moreover, this mutation does not associate with increased levels of ALT: If your dog hashigh ALT levels, please consult your veterinarian.
