RETROFIT What is Electrical RETROFIT in CNC Machine?
ELECTRICAL CABIN BEFORE ELECTRICAL CABIN AFTER
Old Operating New Operating
Panel Panel
In the case of the older Generation CNC machines, Mechanical systems are much capable of hold their life time then the
Electrical System. Hence complete electrical system & Partial mechanical elements can be renovated with modern electrical
system which is combination of New technology Control, Drives, Motors and standardized wiring panel (as below ) in Old
machines are Generally referred as a Retrofit.
RETROFIT Why we Need to Retrofit old CNC Machines?
Older Control Systems are much compromising with errors such
as ball screw error, backlash, Various friction, thermal expansion,
non-linear error and other symptoms of mechanical wears.
Improved control technology provides additional machining
cycles which improves productivity and significantly reducing
Machining time.
High accuracy, controlled feed rate particularly during contour
milling can be achieved by using advanced compensation
technique.
Improved user friendly programming & inbuilt profile graphic
support can provide additional support for operators which is
incorporated with Modern controls systems.
RETROFIT
Standardized new electrical panel & wiring will avoid system &
power supply failures due to the short circuit, ground fault &
defective old components. Therefore machine brake down time
can be minimized.
Most of the old machines Power supply & servo technology
(Analog) build in between 1980’s to 1990’s and Such Power
supply systems are either obsolete or difficult to maintain and
much power consuming which can be replaced with Digital servo
systems.
Improved Memory capacity of the Modern controls allow as to
execute complex 5-axis programs.
Spare parts supply can be extended for a longer period of time.
RETROFIT Factors Need to be Analyzed During the Machine Modernizing
Time Factors
- Delivery Time for Electrical package.
Time required to Prepare the Machine for Retrofit.
Installation & Commissioning of Electrical system.
Mechanical Corrections, if required.
Calibrating machine Performance with Laser.
Cost Factor
Retrofit expenses are depends upon the scope of work( Electrical & Mechanical) involved, how ever
Retrofit cost will not exceed 1/3 of the new machine cost.
RETROFIT
Some of the old System accessories can be utilized along with new system (Eg: Linear Scale, Rotary
Encoder for Table & Rotating head)
Note: Feasibility need to be conformed by System supplier.
Make sure most of the machine configuration & PLC functions are retained during the retrofit.
Additional PLC application can be added according to the End customer need.

RETROFIT Advantages By Using HEIDENHAIN Power Supply & Axis Drives
Regenerative Power supply For Less Power Consumption
Our Control Establishes Bi-directional communication with Inverter & Power supply
without any additional Interface cards.
Additional Safety Elements such as Line Filter, EPCOS (DC-Filter) And KDR
(Commutating reactor) are used to provide additional component safety for INDIAN
power situations.
Easy to mount by Single row (or) Multi row.
Compact Power pack added advantage for small scale machines.
Reliable High Current Components (IGBT) are used.
PWM frequency can be adjusted to the motor current. Example: Very high
