RETROGRADE PLANETS:
Part One
THE PHENOMENA
Astrology for the SoulThe Complete Course for Chart Interpretat ion
Besides the Sun and the Moon, all planets will have a
retrograde period in their orbits around the Sun at their pass
closest to Earth, called perigee.
Retrograde is when a planet appears to move backwards from a
geocentric perspective, Planets appear to move backward along ecliptic
as a slower moving planet is approached and overtaken by faster moving
planet, the movement in the zodiac appears backward.
The phenomena of retrograde motion resembles that of 2 trains passing
each other, the faster moving train momentarily appears to move
backward from the perspective of the slower moving train.
Interior planets, Mercury and Venus, retrograde when moving between Sun
and Earth, closest to Earth in cycle around Sun.
Exterior planets, Mars to Pluto, retrograde when moving in an opposition to
the Sun, closest to Earth in their cycle around the Sun.
As retrogrades have everything to do with synodic cycles, planetary orbits
and the combination of the line up between Sun, Earth and Planet, each
planet spends different amounts of time retrograde and a different
percentage of their time retrograde. The table shows that Venus is the
planet least likely to be found retrograde, whereas Pluto is the most likely
planet to find retrograde in an astrology chart.
It is quite usual to find a few planets retrograde, yet especially rare to have all or
many planets retrograde, no planets retrograde or only one planet retrograde.

RETROGRADE PLANETS: THE PHENOMENA
Retrograde planets in a natal charts are shown by a small red or black Rx
symbol. Retrograde planets:
RETROGRADE PLANETS IN CHART DELINEATION
Signify a more subjective and reflective internally focused orientation with the
planet.
Can be much more sharply defined and focused.
Act against the grain, retreat or rebel.
Reject the status quo and concepts of the direct moving planets and their
planetary meaning.
Are physically slower moving therefore more deliberate to act, more thoughtful
and less impulsive.
From a karmic point of view, the retrograde planet represents the soul’s intention
for a life lesson, a greater challenge that must be met in order to deal with
unfinished business and clear the path for future progress.
Are closest in their cycles to Earth therefore are seen to be more potent and
somehow accentuated.
Will indicate a deeper more challenged experience of the retrograde planet. eg.
Mars with anger issues or energy levels, Venus with self love and values and
relationships, Mercury with communicating and learning abilities.

MODULE FOUR
Note:
Exterior planets, when retrograde are at their brightest and most visible at their
closet pass to Earth. Interior planets, Venus and Mercury are at their brightest
just before retrogrades begin and finish, before and after their “Cazimi” of the
Sun, as they transition from evening to morning stars.
Stationing planets are planets found at the beginning and end of retrograde
periods, when a planet stands still to turn around so to speak, from direct
motion to retrograde, or from retrograde to direct again.
These stationing periods are seen as the most significant parts of a
retrograde cycle and intensify, magnify and concentrate the retrograde
meaning and experience.
Check planetary motion by using an ephemeris to see if a planet is near a
stationing point.
Look for stations around 0 -7 days for faster moving planets, 5-10 days for
midrange planets, and 2-3++ weeks for outer planets before and after
retrograde cycles (outer planets can stay in the same degree for quite a long
time around stationing points)
STATIONING PLANETS
Rejects and rebels with information, are more attuned to specific information
and learning techniques, and learn in their own unique ways, are more
individualistic.
Can show more clarity, depth, intensity, focus, and refined thinking.
Can show a greater capacity to perceive symbols, messages and non-verbal
communication.
Thoughts and perceptions are more internalised, can be slower on the
uptake, overthink
Evolutionarily can be slowed down for a reason.

PLANETS STATIONING
Inner planets will turn retrograde as evening stars (setting after the Sun)
Mercury when about 20° behind the Sun, and Venus about 30° behind the
Sun (setting after the Sun)
Inner planets will turn direct as morning stars (rising before the Sun)
Mercury when approximately 20° ahead of the Sun, and Venus 30° ahead
of the Sun.
It’s quite easy to check for stationing retrograde or stationing direct Planets.
Of course checking an ephemeris will always confirm where planets are and
how fast or slow they are traveling. Yet a simple understanding of synodic
cycles will help you see clearly from a chart, alerting you to check.

Planetary Relationships: Aspects, Pairs and PatternsMODULE THREE
PLANETARY RULERSHIPS
Part Two
Astrology for the SoulThe Complete Course for Chart Interpretat ion
IN THIS LESSON
With the considerations of all chart factors that come prior to this, having now
studied the elements, the modes, planets by signs and houses, the aspects, the
aspect patterns created and chart shapes, the nodal axis, its aspects and rulers,
Pluto and its PPP we now move to consider the impact of retrograde planets and a
few other things that can be taken into account for natal chart delineation and
synthesis.
The Culmination: Evolutionary Chart InterpretationMODULE FOUR
INTRODUCTION
Planetary rulership
Essential dignities
Dispositors
Mutual receptions and other considerations.
Essential dignity or debility, is a traditional method used to determine planetary
condition. All signs, angles and houses have planetary rulers. We asses planets
gaining strength or receiving extra challenges by being in particular signs or houses
when looking at their sign rulers, giving us more information about the chart
dynamic. More below.
PLANETARY RULERSHIPS
Are the ruling planet of a sign, which another planet is in. All planets in a sign have
a dispositor, unless of course they are in their rulership. eg Venus in Leo is disposited
by the Sun. Therefore the dispositor of Venus in Leo is the Sun (ruler of Leo). Venus
at the same time is the dispositor of any planets in her ruling signs, Taurus and
Libra. Dispositors help link a chain or theme in a chart. The Sun in Leo however, has
no dispositor, as it is in its own rulership. Essentially we look for each sign’s ruler, to
find the dispositor, unless in home sign. You can see how planets hold power in their
home sign as they stop the chain of command.
DISPOSITORS
Astrology for the SoulThe Complete Course for Chart Interpretat ion
The chart ruler is the planet that rules the Ascendent, we look for its placements
and condition - house, aspects etc. in the chart. We also consider rulers of the
Sun and the Moon and how these 3 main rulers see each other in the chart as
well. More below:
The Culmination: Evolutionary Chart InterpretationMODULE FOUR
CHART RULERSHIPS
Mutual Reception occurs when two planets are in each other's signs of rulership.
Example: Mercury is in Aries and Mars is in Gemini; Mars in Libra - Venus in Aries;
Jupiter in Virgo - Mercury in Sagittarius; Mars in Scorpio - Pluto in Aries; Moon in
Leo - Sun in Cancer
MUTUAL RECEPTION
A singleton or an inferior function, can be a great source of motivation and
creative expression and well worth considering analysing further.
It is always advised to keep an eye out for things that make a chart unique, or shift
the dynamic and function in a certain way, therefore singletons or any anomalies
are worth considering. These may include unaspected planets(use the 5 main
aspects) missing or unique functions, like no Air in a chart or an unaspected Mars,
no squares, only one retrograde planet or something else.
SINGLETONS
When planets are in mutual reception they do not need to be in aspect to be
connected and are supportive bring strength and provide assistance to each
other. They get how the other planet works, they consult with each other
Planets in Mutual reception connect the houses and signs they are in.
Being aware of Mutual Reception in one's natal chart, can bring tremendous
insight into the nature of one's behavioral patterns and how to consciously
work with these to evolve and balance these energies.
Don’t forget to see traditional rulers as well:
Example: with Mars in Pisces and Jupiter in Aries, we would want to consider
both modern and traditional rulerships of Aries and Pisces!
Mars in Pisces (Jupiter as ruler)) - Jupiter in Aries ( ruled by Mars)
Mars in Pisces - (Neptune as ruler) - Neptune in Scorpio( ruled by Mars)
Astrology for the SoulThe Complete Course for Chart Interpretat ion
In previous models we have covered the planets as the rulers of the signs, it is
also worth considering planets and their essential dignities and debilities -
rulership, exaltation, fall and detriment. These considerations give us more
information on the function of the planet’s strengths and potential weak
points, they deserve noting and further inquiry.
THE KEY to Essential dignity is to consider the way a planet acts, or acts out
in a particular sign, used extensively in Horary Astrology to determine
planetary dynamics, but also helping us in natal interpretation to ascertain
planetary strength within a chart. It is not about seeing the planets as
controlling or damaged, but rather about the affinity and resonance between
planets in certain signs.
Some astrologers have changed the unfortunate words of “detriment”, and
“fall” in their work by using words like “adversity” and “depression” instead.
We take in these meanings as essential guides to help us better determine
how a planet operates in a particular sign, instead of seeing them as
unfortunate signatures in the chart, as the words suggest.
In EA astrology modern planetary rulership is mostly used, yet these days
astrology moves toward a synthesis of modern and traditional methods, it is
best at this stage of learning to not cast out traditional rulers like Jupiter for
Pisces and Mars for Scorpio and consider both modern and traditional rulers
in chart delineation. With practice one can decide which they would prefer to
use. EA Astrology uses modern rulership, yet for some ancient methods,
traditional rulers should also be considered.
In examples used, I will pay attention to traditional rulers, to avoid confusion,
but i will always consider modern rulers and dispositors as well. What I have
found that using both adds much to the natal story.

a planet in rulership is a planet in its own domicile-home.
is comfortable, at home, able to act with ease, natural, has what it needs around.
Example: Mars in Aries, Venus in Taurus, Saturn in Capricorn etc
Rulership
a planet in detriment is seen to be out of place, at its most vulnerable, far from
home , safety and security, does not have as much support or strength in its
placement.
Example: Moon in Capricorn is in detriment and functions in a way that is
antithesis to what the Moon represents, self care and nurturing; In Capricorn, the
Moon acts responsible for others, instead of needed nurturing of self
Detriment
a planet in exaltation is seen as a special guest, receiving the royal treatment,
getting the best of the best, yet this is still not like at home, but on show, can act
spoilt, precious or superficially.
Example: Saturn in Libra is in exaltation and it is like being in heaven for Saturn,
everything is geared to balance and order, just how Saturn likes it.
Exaltation
Astrology for the SoulThe Complete Course for Chart Interpretat ion The Culmination: Evolutionary Chart Interpretation
MODULE FOUR
Sun in the 5th, Moon in the 3rd, Mercury in the 1st, Venus in the 5th, Mars in
the 6th, Jupiter in the 11th, Saturn in the 12th.
Example : if the Moon was in Cancer in the 3rd house, it would also gain extra
strength and expression by being in its JOY in the 3rd House as it would if it
were in its comfort zone and natural place in the 4th House.
Example: Mars is in JOY in the 6th house, and not when in Virgo.
Traditional astrologers also considered planets to hold JOY in particular houses,
something to keep in mind.
Planets are in JOY:
It is important to note, JOY is by House, not sign.
Consider why these other placements of planets would find JOY in the above
mentioned houses!
Planets in JOY
a planet is seen to have least strength, is compromised in its ability to act.
Example : Mercury in Pisces - does not gather information in a logical typical
mercurial fashion, but has its own way of operating through communicating in
images, metaphors, feelings and inspiration. This can be a great gift as well
as a challenge.
Fall
Uranus-Aquarius
Neptune-Pisces
Pluto- Scorpio
Some streams of astrology assign the outer planets to a particular detriment, fall
and exaltation as well, yet it’s best to keep to the traditional planets and just use
the outer planets as modern co-rulers of signs instead:
The idea of the outer planets and their transpersonal qualities, is that they RULE
wherever they are and don’t need extra weight to them, or to be considered as
weakened or exalted anywhere.
Outer Planets and Modern Rulerships
Astrology for the SoulThe Complete Course for Chart Interpretat ion The Culmination: Evolutionary Chart Interpretation
MODULE FOUR
When it comes to planetary rulerships and chart interpretation, the main things
to consider are the planetary rulers of the Ascendent, the Sun, Moon and the
MC, and their dispositors. We have already worked with Nodal Rulers in previous
segments as these too are most important in EA astrology.
CHART RULERS AND DISPOSITORS
The Chart Ruler is the planet that rules the Ascendant sign. We look further
at where this planet is, what sign, what house. We look at this planet to get
more information about the person, their drive, their purpose and their
modus operandi, with what aspects it makes or receives and what condition
it is in and what and where is its dispositor. Is it retrograde, does it have
squares, is it on the nodes etc ?
Example: if Aries is your Ascendant sign, we pay extra special attention to
ruler Mars and how it is operating in the natal chart. If Mars is in Libra, we
also look to the dispositor of Mars, which is Venus for extra information.
Venus disposits Mars, as he is in her domicle.
We may also consider the ruler of the Sun, and the Moon and their
dispositors, to help us find ongoing themes running throughout the chart,
giving more information about the function of a particular planet.
Chart rulers, and dispositors work together to weave particular themes and
narratives through our natal charts and astrology in general. Look for
dominant themes, or planets that show upon more frequently.
What if Mercury ruled your ASC, MC, and your MOON, and Mercury was in
Pisces and retrograde?
Apply dispositors to Nodal rulers, for extra information on the Nodal axis.
Example:

MODULE FOUR
HOUSE RULERS AND DISPOSITORS
If there are no planets in a house we can look at house cusp rulers, and
dispositors for more information regarding that house.
For an individual who has no planets in 9th house, the cusp of the 9th house is
Leo. To gain further info about the 9th house, we look to the planetary ruler of
the cusp, which is the Sun. We look at the Sun placement to get more
information on how the 9th house operates. The Sun is in Pisces in the 4th
house, and the dispositor of the Sun is Jupiter (& Neptune). We look for how
these planets are operating to get even more information about the native’s
9th house. Do they trine the 9th house, square the 9th house, is there a
connection or not?

Example - Anonymous - 20th Feb, 1968- 1:40pm Sydney

Traditional Rulership
Chart ruler - Mercury - disposited by Saturn
Sun ruler - Jupiter - disposited - Mercury
Moon ruler - Mars - in Aries in domicile/rulership
Modern Rulership
Chart ruler - Mercury - disposited by Uranus
Sun ruler - Neptune - disposited by Pluto
Moon ruler - Pluto - in Scorpio in modern rulership sign
In this chart we can see strong themes develop when we look at therulerships and their dispositors.
Co-ruler of Aquarius Uranus, modern ruler.
Uranus is in Virgo, a Mercury ruled sign, retrograde in the 4th house.
The ruler of ascendant is Mercury. Mercury is retrograde in the 9th House in
Aquarius. It is in a trine aspect with the South Node and sextile to the North
Node, with an inconjunction to Pluto and a square to Neptune and the Moon. It is
disposited by Saturn traditional ruler, Saturn is in Aries in detriment in the 10th
house.
Modern ruler Neptune is in Scorpio in the 6th squared by retrograde Mercury,
and disposited by Pluto in Virgo on IC.
The Sun in Pisces also in the 9th house, is disposited by Jupiter. Jupiter is in
Mercury’s sign, opposing the Sun in the 3rd house.
Modern ruler Pluto is angular at the IC, also in Mercury’s sign.
The Moon is in Scorpio in detriment in the 6th house, disposited by Mars. Mars is
in 10th house in his own sign, strong in its placement.

MODULE FOUR
This person is a deep and unique thinking individual, a writer and whistleblower
of sorts, and a conspiracy theorist with many wild and way out ideas and
philosophies that he is compelled to share with the world. His theories and ideas
have gotten him into much strife and trouble over the years because of it. He has
never followed any traditional methods of work. His idealistic nature and vision
for a better world and wanting to help fix it and not wanting to be part of it, can
be seen as the theme running through his astrology as we connect rulers and
dispositors. He is a big risk taker and daring, not giving up, obsessive, beyond
what is good for him, and taking care of himself. He has been arrested and
accused of being a terrorist, had many deep issues with drugs and addictions,
yet has a strong and compelling need to tell the world exactly how $%(^(PP) up
it is often disregarding the consequences.
Some strengthening charts factors are:
A mutual reception - Uranus in Virgo and Mercury in Aquarius - these two
planets can bee seen to recognize each other, conspire together, and
understand each other.
Mars is in rulership - He has the bravado to stand up to authority, Mars is
also conjunct Saturn, and has been punished for that, even locked up in
mental institutions. It is the ruler of his North Node, and he is a sole
operator taking it all on by himself.
The chart ruler, trickster Mercury retrograde in Aquarius, is a strong
archetype, playing out strongly in his life. When we connect the trail of
connections, we start finding a clearer theme and working purpose behind
it all.

EXERCISES - FROM YOUR OWN CHART
From your own chart note Chart Ruler ?1.
2. What is the chart ruler's dispositor?
What sign and house is it?
What aspects does it make?
What is the condition/dignity of the chart ruler?
How does this tell you more about your ruling planet activating in your
chart?
What sign and house is it?
What aspects does it make?
What is the condition/dignity of the dispositor?
How does this tell you more about your ruling planet activating in your
chart?
3. Do the same for your Sun, and Moon and Nodes.
What sign and house is it?
What aspects does it make?
What is the condition/dignity of the planet's ruler?
How does this tell you more about your ruling planet activating in your
chart?
4. Are there one or 2 dominating planets in the sequence of rulership of the
above? What theme can you see between the rulers, their condition/dignity and
how it deepens the understanding of your chart?
Mostly don’t get overwhelmed with it all. Take your time do the exercises, use otherexample charts of family and friends and have fun exploring the magic!
5. Do you have any mutual receptions? If so how does this mutual reception
help explain a connection between the planets and them operating together?
6. Are there any singletons, missing or abundant functions in your chart?
If so how do they help explain more about the dynamics of your chart and its
personality so to speak?
