Teen Program Session Expands in SeptemberThe Teens on the Rise program, now in its third year, is growing from six to eight weeks. There will be classes to educate the teens in valuable life skills such as banking, healthy habits, proper nutrition, family planning and seeking employment. A new addition this year will be classes in entrepreneurial skills lead by a group of University of Dayton professors. As always, the teens and the staff are excited about the new session. On The Rise Featured on “Returning the Favor”Mike Rowe’s Facebook show, “Returning the Favor”, surprised Deb and Cathy in April and filmed an episode that was released on July 4th. The episode was titled “Saving Kids On The Farm” and it has had 3 million Facebook views! The purpose of the show is to reward “bloody do-gooders”, people doing good in their community, by surprising them with a visit from Mike Rowe and gifts to help with their work. The crew was filming for a few days, on the pretense that they were filming a documentary. Deb had been suspicious because she had a funny feeling that the producers were not being totally honest, which they weren’t. Luckily, Joel Kunce, former OTR youth member who was aware of the secret, phoned Deb and convinced her that this was good thing and that she should trust him. Then one day during the filming, Mike Rowe walked into the barn and surprised them. The big reveal came when Mike Rowe and some of his crew left, went to the park in North Hampton, and returned with a brand new John Deere tractor that was pulling a wagon filled with friends of On The Rise. A representative from JD Equipment of London also presented Deb and Cathy with a certificate for 5 years free maintenance on the new tractor. Then, Mike Rowe presented Cathy and Deb with a check for $10,000 for On The Rise.

The video has brought so much attention to On The Rise from all over the world. Deb has been contacted by people from Africa, Norway, Washington, DC, Michigan, and other places, who want to create similar programs for teens in their communities. Many former OTR members have come out to visit the farm again after seeing the video, and those reunions have brought joy to Deb and Cathy. They wish to thank the producers of “Returning the Favor”, Mike Rowe, the OTR Board of Directors, Joel Kunce, the family who nominated OTR, JD Equipment, and everyone who helped for

New Partnership with United Senior ServicesOn The Rise is excited about a new program starting soon. We are very grateful to Barb Rossler, volunteer coordinator, and the RSVP program director at United Senior Services. Barb has helped match senior volunteers with training classes they can lead at the farm to bring the generations together and share knowledge. We have five senior volunteers who are anxious to come to the farm. This intergenerational program will bring seniors and students together to learn from each other.

OSU Extension EFNEP Classes Taught at the FarmThe staff of On The Rise wants to thank the OSU Extension division of Family & Consumer Sciences for their help with programs such as EFNEP, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. The classes were provided at the farm every two weeks. These classes, using vegetables from the farm garden, helped educate the youth and their families in good nutritional habits.

Take Me Out to the Champion City Kings! The youth of On The Rise and their families were treated to a hometown baseball game recently. Bob Cripe, OTR board member, donated 100 tickets for a Champion City Kings game. Lee’s Famous Recipe donated chicken dinners, and our board members provided side dishes for the guests. A total of 85 people attended. Thanks to “Mr. Bob” and all of our board members.

Terrific Summer at the Springfield Farmer’s MarketThe annual Springfield Farmer’s Market has been phenomenal this season! We have a few new products such as chicken breakfast sausage, chicken Italian links, and goat chorizo. The kids also sell brown eggs, goat brats and carrots. The Kid’s Carrot Company regularly sells out of their colorful carrot bunches. All of the publicity from the Mike Rowe video increased our visibility and the On The Rise market booth has been selling out of items weekly. The market continues until the end of September, downtown Springfield near the Heritage Center from 9:00 to 12:30.

On The Rise Girls Win Ribbons at Clark County FairThere were five girls showing goats who placed at the 2018 Clark County Fair. Ty’eisha Enoch (above left) and Raine Methany (above right) placed with their animals..

Kids Corner by Raine MethanyThe On-The-Rise Family has taught me so much about how to eat healthy. How to act like a lady. How to treat one another and O-T-R is one of the most wonderful places I've ever been in my last 3 years.  Ms. Deb is a wonderful lady. I wish I had more time to spend with her same as Ms. Cathy. Mr. Arlan is our van driver I think he is a wonderful person. I just want to tell him how I appreciate how much he is cares on how we get home. So then there’s the boys and girls, they are very cool and nice people.  I will miss them all, I will miss it all
