Boys Track Wins State!May 25th, 1968

• Head coach Don Kohlmann and the 1968 Proviso West boys track team had to think that they had a good shot at winning the state team title.

• After all, Proviso West had already built a tradition during the first 10 years of the school's history, as West had top-10 team finishes in the state track meet in 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1965.

• Earlier in the 1967-68 school year, the Panthers' cross country team finished second in the state, only a single point behind team state champion Arlington, as the elusive second state championship in school history slipped away once again.

Earlier in the year the Cross Country team had placed 2nd in the state.

1968 BOYS TRACK TEAM WINS STATE!

• Rich Elliott started the march toward the title, defending his state crown in the two-mile run, and teammate Chuck McGrath finished fourth in the same event. The duo put West on top of the team scoring leader board right from the start.

• Junior Rich Vallicelli, who would become a five-time all-stater in the sprint races, placed third in the 100-yard dash, tallying more points for the Panthers.

1968 BOYS TRACK TEAM WINS STATE!

• Tom Likens increased West's scoring total, tying for second place in the pole vault. Proviso West clinched the team title when Vallicelli won the 200-yard dash, running the long straight-away at Champaign's Memorial Stadium in 21.9 seconds.

• When the final points were tallied, Proviso West stood atop the team scores with 20 1/2 points, 4 1/2 points ahead of state runner-up East St. Louis Lincoln. The long campaign to secure the first-place trophy was finally realized in a true team effort.

BOYS TRACK TEAM WINS STATE IN 1968

• During the 1968 track season, Proviso West won the state district meet, captured both the indoor and outdoor West Suburban Conference team titles, and claimed the Oak Park Relays, the unofficial indoor state meet at the time.

• At the state meet, the Panthers diversified their stock, scoring in the sprints, the distances and in the field events.
