Two great nights of fun, music, and dance. Two great crowds of supporters. You worked hard all term to rehearse and then produced two great nights of entertainment. Well done! Y7/8 Mahurangi Sports Challenge Our first ever interschool sports challenge with the Y7/8 students of Mahurangi College takes place on Friday 31 July at Mahurangi College. We will enter teams in Netball, Rugby, and Soccer, and hopefully add this trophy to the one we already have in the cabinet from the Mangawhai Beach School Challenge last term. Parents please keep an eye out for notices, etc from Mr Lees regarding this event. Team 1 & 2 Author Visit this Thursday We have sourced a wonderful kiwi author, Nicholas Rumble, to come and visit the school to promote his stunning book. He presents an interactive puppet show and shares what inspires him to write using nature, photography and values. His books use NZ native birds. Team 1 will enjoy his visit at 1.30pm and Team 2 at 2.15pm. Note there is no charge for this. Maths Week During the week of the 10 th of August the school will participate in Math’s week, a National Week focusing on maths. Children will engage in a variety of extra maths activities in the classrooms and online. They may even bring home activities to challenge their parents. Have a go! Whanau Classes Start This Friday Our new Whanau class initiative will begin this Friday. Our four house groups will be divided into three or four smaller classes and be assigned a teacher. On Friday afternoons when there isn’t an assembly Whanau Classes will meet. These classes will include children from all age groups and engage in activities designed to get to know each other and grow a sense of community among our students. To get this started in a positive way we are asking children from Teams 3 and 4 (Y4-8) to each bring a suitable item for a shared afternoon tea. (baking, biscuits, chips, etc. No fizzy drinks please. If baking please deliver on a disposable plate, thanks). They hand this item in at the office, to be divided up among the whanau classes on Friday afternoon. Thank you, in advance. I realise you only have Thursday and Friday morning to deliver these. If students enjoy learning then they tend to do well at school. Sport, games, gardening, fishing, swimming, boating, bike riding, bush walking, and building are typical New Zealand pastimes which can offer the family a chance to learn together. Reading maps, listening to weather forecasts, measuring, making purchasing choices, and considering long term and short term decision- making can all be shared for the benefit of the child. The basic skills of sharing, taking turns, encouraging others, learning to win, lose and persevere can also be taught within the family. Such learning has links with school success and is likely to establish and reinforce the relationship between what is studied at school and the realities of everyday life. Read together occasionally instead of watching TV. Try picking a book together and reading it at the same time. Ask your child to read to you from the newspaper. Inspire the reading with real life questions: “What’s the best mortgage interest rate at the moment?” “Will the tides be any good for floundering this weekend?” “What’s the latest news on that police hunt?”

Coaching Children for Life An authoritative parenting course for children of all ages

(Formerly ‘Parents that Rock’) - Brian Shires

Dates: Tuesday 28th July - 6 weeks - Time: 9.30am – 12.00pm

Venue: Homebuilders, 5 Hexham Street, Warkworth

Does parenting sometimes seem like unnecessary hard work, are you

searching for answers on how to change behaviour, or do you just want

to ensure you are on the right track?

Some children are easy to parent and some are very difficult. This

course looks at a wide range of topics designed to equip parents with

up to date knowledge and strategies that bring enjoyment and success

into parenting.

Topics include: Building a relationship that encourages compliance, rule

setting, temperament types, parenting styles, ages and stages,

communication, basics of behaviour and safe effective discipline

techniques.

Regardless if you are just entering parenting or are well into it, this

course offers something for everyone. Parent feedback; I got a lot of tips to help me where my toddler is coming from, and what things will work for him and what won’t. Other parents made me feel we are all in the same boat. If you are a new parent this course gives you the to do list that you will need to form a relationship with your children. This course was very helpful for understanding my children…

This course is great for teaching precious tools in parenting.
