Individual Schedule. Section - Education Q.16 & 16(a). _________ This variable is derived for all those aged 69 or under from the responses to Q.16 and Q.16(a). To obtain the highest educational qualification the four possible higher and the four lower qualifications were compared and the highest for any particular individual was recorded. The hierarchical classification used corresponds to that of the Department of Education and Science. The Scottish Education Department has a slightly different classification, but all respondents, whether living in England or Scotland have been coded according to the English classification.
