Rev. Artur Sowa, Pastor

The St. Francis of Assisi Community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

MORSELS & TIDBITS FROM THE PASTOR The Feast of Christ the King We conclude this year of faith with the glorious feast of Christ the King. It is a splendid way to conclude each year of grace, during which we celebrate the life of Jesus and the message of salvation. Each year of grace begins with Advent, which takes us on our annual sojourn through time to the age of the prophets and that time of anticipation for the coming of the Messiah. We celebrate the birth of Jesus, his public ministry of teaching and miracles, his suffering, death, resur-rection, and ascension. We recall the institution of the church and the coming of the Holy Spirit. The paschal mystery is renewed each year. Our annual review of the message of salvation in Christ culminates with today’s celebration of Christ the King. Sunday Gospel in Everyday English The people stood there staring at Jesus, and the ringleaders made faces, taunt-ing, “He saved others. Let’s see him save himself! The Messiah of God—ha! The Chosen—ha!” The soldiers also came up and poked fun at him, making a game of it. They toasted him with sour wine: “So you’re King of the Jews! Save your-self!” Printed over him was a sign: this is the king of the Jews. One of the criminals hanging alongside cursed him: “Some Messiah you are! Save yourself! Save us!” But the other one made him shut up: “Have you no fear of God? You’re getting the same as him. We deserve this, but not him—he did nothing to deserve this.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you enter your Kingdom.” He said, “Don’t worry, I will. Today you will join me in paradise” (from Luke 23). Notes on the Scripture The folks at Hebron knew just what to do when David arrived. They claimed him as their king. But many Christians seem uncertain that Christ is King, or that citi-zenship in his Kingdom is our primary allegiance. It could be a matter of terminol-ogy: Kingship is off-putting in a democratic age. Paul preferred the phrase: Jesus is Lord. Authority has become such a soiled garment in our times that the idea of ultimate authority seems to have no positive corollary. But sovereignty is the message: the power without peer. For Christians, Jesus is sovereign, and the reign of God trumps every other reality. Essayist Charles Lamb once wrote, “If Shakespeare should come into this room, we would all rise; but if Jesus Christ should come in, we would all kneel.” The sentiment is right, but the use of the conditional, at least with reference to Jesus, is misleading. Jesus Christ is among us and his Kingdom is within us. If Jesus is our King, the time to make our allegiance is now. If we believe the reign of God is among us, it’s time to live according to its values. Thanksgiving Please join us on Thursday for 10am Mass as we give thanks to God for all our blessings. On this national day of giving thanks, think about the people in your life from whom you have received the gift of faith. Who brought you to the church for Baptism? Who taught you about God and how to pray? Who took you to Mass? Who inspired you by the way they lived their faith? Perhaps you will think of parents or grandparents, special teachers or other friends. Whoever it is, they deserve your thanks. On this day of thanksgiving, be mindful and grateful for the gift of faith.

OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today’s feast invites us to look beyond our nation-al loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it’s like to belong to God’s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke’s Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be--a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise.

Adult Faith Formation

AROUND FOR AWHILE, by Fr. Ed Upton

Thursday we celebrate an important and won-derful day in the life of Americans: Thanksgiv-ing. As a way to reflect on this day, let me share a few thoughts that were triggered by a program I recently watched on WTTW. While I had pre-viously watched it, the story again captured my attention. This was a true story about a comptroller in Dixon, Ill. Over a peri-od of 22 years, she em-bezzled $57 million dol-lars from the city. This was the largest municipal theft in the history of the United States. She developed a cover story, saying that a for-mer boyfriend left her a sizable bequest. Be-cause she was well re-spected, her simple story never raised a question. She loved Quarter Hors-es and had purchased over 400. They were kept in 12 stables around the country. She received countless awards for these horses. Her ex-travagant life style was well known. What caught my attention was the length of time she was able to continue her scam. As the comp-troller, she reported to the mayor and city coun-

cil. Because of her steal-ing, the city incurred an-nual deficits. She con-sistently provided believ-able cover stories to ac-count for the deficits. In addition to the “supervision” required of the political leaders, the city also retained an out-side accounting firm that had access to financial information and regularly examined the financial records. With a local bank, she created a ficti-tious bank account. No one at the bank ques-tioned her or the city when she opened that account where she was the only signer. I was amazed at the neg-ligence of those who had the responsibility of over-sight: the political lead-ers, the accountants and the banker. She was sent to jail. None of the oversight people were accused of having a part in her massive scam – none went to jail. How-ever, the political leaders were not reelected and the accounting firm and the bank were sued. What has this unhappy story to do with Thanksgiving? It struck me that those who were responsible for oversight simply ceased to pay attention. They

became lazy. They obvi-ously gave only cursory attention to the finances for which they had re-sponsibility. Year after year they must have just said “let her do it.” Let me suggest Thanks-giving as the day to exam self. See if our life has become routine. Have we ceased to give atten-tion to people for whom we have a responsibility or connection? Do I find myself saying to a spouse, “you don’t lis-ten?” “You don’t care”. Saying to a child, “I don’t have time”. Saying to an employee. “I can’t be bothered” Thanksgiving is a day to look at self and ask if there is a cursory ele-ment that has crept into my life. Have I forgotten to say, “Thanks?” It was a painful to read of such excessive self-centered and dishonest acts. It was also painful to read about such lazy and irresponsible behav-ior. Happy Thanksgiving! Take some time to look beyond our food - take a look at our life.

“Project Linus” is a nationwide non-profit organi-zation operated 100% by caring volunteers. The mission is to provide a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or in need of something to snuggle with. The ideal blanket is any size from infant to teens. The blankets have been donated to Hos-pitals, Crisis Centers, and Police & Fire Depart-ments to provide that human touch that some-one does indeed care for them.

Donated blankets may be placed in the “Project Linus Box” located in the closet area off the ves-tibule/Narthex of the church. Project Linus requests that donors place a note with their name and address on each donated item. We are in need of yarn for our volunteers, any size or color yarn will be put to great use.
