FROM FR. QUINT
Thanks to our ushers for counting people at Masses during the
month of September. We should really count parishioners at every
Mass and then put out approximately that number of altar breads
(hosts) so that the assembly would be nourished from the fruit of the
sacrifice just offered before their eyes. The priest MUST consume
Communion at the Masses he offers and the church strongly prefers
that the assembly would as well. Holy Communion is reserved in the
tabernacle primarily so our Lord may be taken to the sick and dying, as
well as offering a wonderful context of prayer. It is not meant to be a
storage space to provide for sufficient Communion at Masses. But that
aside, he are some thoughts on the count numbers in comparison with
times past.
How tragic there are 1265 fewer people at our weekend Masses
than just 9 years ago. If we have that same attrition in the next 9 years
there will be fewer than 500 people worshipping at Masses on the
weekend we would need about 2 Masses a weekend instead of the 9
that we currently offer. Clearly, just based on the numbers, we could
offer fewer Masses. That is heart breaking because already we have
far fewer Masses than in the past and the population of Dyersville
increased by 500 (Dubuque County increased 3,000 and Delaware
decreased 1,000).
There are countless factors that influence worship patterns: under-
standing of the real presence of Jesus in Holy Communion, family of
origin, schools, prayer, awareness of obligation, understanding of sin,
desire for heaven, parish life, church design, hospitality, music,
preaching and so many more. We cannot sit back and hope that
people will come to us for worship. Jesus fostered personal encounters
with people and sewed faith. We also cannot hesitate to share the joy
of our Catholic faith and to invite family, friends, coworkers and
neighbors into worship and parish life.

Other items:

Monday is the feast of St. Luke. Take a moment and read a portion
of his beautiful gospel or some of the Acts of the Apostles which he
also wrote. Friday is the memorial of Pope St. John Paul II. We
give God thanks for this charismatic, holy, and learned pastor.
Beckman Catholic will transfer from the WAMAC conference into
the River Valley Conference for fine arts and athletics with the

the WAMAC conference by over 100 students. We look forward to
this transition and continuing to excel.
