HOLY FATHER’S INTENTIONS FOR DECEMBER

Universal: End to Child Soldiers That the scandal of child-soldiers may be eliminated the world over. Evangelization: Europe That the peoples of Europe may rediscover the beauty, goodness and truth of the Gospel which gives joy and hope to life.

Advent is a time to slow down, quiet our hearts and prepare for the coming of Our Lord. This can be a challenge during the hustle and bustle of getting every-thing ready before the holidays. Most of us are shopping, cooking, cleaning and preparing for Christmas. But we must also remember to prioritize what is most important to us, the coming of Jesus! Similar to Lent, Advent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We have to make time for God just as we make time to shop, clean, decorate and prepare for Christmas. An upcoming opportunity to help us enter into this liturgical season is our ongoing Advent Series. This is a wonderful series of events that teach us about pray-er, sacred art, church architecture and lifting our voices to God. I invite you to come hear a wonderful talk that will be presented by Nora Hamerman on December 6. She will be speaking about how Sacred Art makes the story of Advent and Christmas become real and visible to us. I would also like to thank all those who helped make the December 1 Sung Vespers a success! We are grateful to the beauty of that night as well as the ability to praise Our Lord through prayer. Addition-ally, there is an opportunity to help others through the Giving Tree that will be up for several weeks. We give alms through our service to others, and this is the perfect way during this season of giving. More info on our Advent Series and the Giving Tree can be found elsewhere in this bulletin. I would like to welcome our new shepherd, Bishop Michael Burbidge, to our Diocese! His installation Mass is this Tuesday, December 6 at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington. Although this is not open to the public, Bishop Burbidge will be traveling around to every deanery to celebrate Mass and visit with us. He will be celebrating Mass in our deanery on January 19 at 7 p.m. at St. Bernadette’s in Springfield. There will be a reception after the Mass; all are invited! I hope all of you are able to enter into this season of Advent with joyful hearts and eager expectation. I invite you, once again, to check out the many opportunities we have going on here at the parish to enter into this sacred season.
