Welcome Bulldogs to the 2016-2017 school year at Baker Intermediate School! It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Baker Intermediate Family. The faculty and staff at Baker Intermediate look forward to serving you this year. We hope that this will be a year where you will build positive relationships with your child’s teachers, as we work as a team to provide a quality education for your child. Please feel free to contact us at any time. We appreciate all of our Baker families and invite you to take an active role in PTO, school events, and school committees. At BIS, we have an extensive volunteer program if you are interested in serving in that capacity.

We are looking forward to a year filled with active learning for our children. All students will receive a student planner to assist them with organizing daily, weekly and long term assignments. The planner also serves as a two-way communication between you and your child’s teachers. Please review your child’s planner with them every day. In addition, I ask that you:

require your child to read independently for at least twenty minutes daily.

practice and review basic math facts daily because many of our students struggle with these skills

monitor your child’s homework nightly and please establish your family procedures that will ensure

that homework and vital information is returned in a timely manner.

We appreciate your support with this initiative. Communication and cooperation from everyone is needed to ensure a safe learning environment for our students. If you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please call the school at 859-745-5190 at any time and leave a message. We also encourage all parents to have at least one parent conference each year.

Working together, we will reach our collective goal which is your child’s academic success and personal growth.

    Sincerely, Josh Mounts Principal

    General Information

Accelerated Classes Baker Intermediate School offers accelerated academic classes for students who desire a challenging curriculum. These classes are open to any incoming or current Baker Intermediate student who meets the accelerated criteria. Placement for accelerated classes will be determined through an analysis of the student’s academic data. Data will include, but not be limited to IQ, MAP scores, KPREP scores, and overall academic achievement. Henry E. Baker Intermediate School’s accelerated classes are based on three fundamental differences from

the research that distinguishes the accelerated learner from more typical learners.

    - The student’s capacity to learn at a faster rates

    - The student’s capacity to find, solve, and act on problems more readily

    - The student’s capacity to manipulate abstract ideas and make connections more readily

Specifically, parents and students can expect the following curriculum principles in accelerated classes:

    - Appropriateness for accelerated learners defined by a curriculum based on assessment of abilities,

interests, needs, and learning styles of accelerated learners

    - Provisions for some type(s) of self-directed learning

    - Provision for exposure to complexity of thought

    - Provisions for transfer of learning to other areas of knowledge and new situations

    - Appropriate time span for learning activities that is consistent with characteristics of accelerated

    learner for shorter/longer time periods

    - Accelerated/advanced pacing of content to include provisions of quickness and aptness of

accelerated students to master new material

    - Provision for a sophisticated level of learning experiences that requires learners to strive for

    understanding.

  • 11

    STUDENT SELECTION & PLACEMENT

The Student Placement Committee will meet to review each student’s data and information. Student placement for accelerated classes will be determined through an analysis of the student’s academic data in each content area (Math, Reading, Science, & Social Studies).

Data will include, but not be limited to IQ, MAP scores, KPREP scores, Guided Reading levels, GPA, and overall academic achievement.

Students will be placed in accelerated classes based on their strengths in each content area compared to their peers’ academic data. Accelerated classes will be offered for the following subject areas reading, math, science, and social studies.

    Curriculum

Curriculum will align to state content standards. Teachers will create an accelerated class syllabus for each content area. These syllabi will be provided to parents and students at the beginning of the school year.

EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS OF STUDENTS IN THE ACCELERATED CLASSES

Exhibit high academic performance in a curriculum offered at an accelerated pace where

homework, independent study projects/research, and active learning are required of all accelerated

    students.

Maintain a “Distinguished” or a minimum of “Proficient” on all K-PREP assessments

Maintain all A’s and B’s on mid-terms and report cards within the specific accelerated class(es).

Complete all assignments and projects in the time allotted at a Distinguished level

Use technology in their learning experiences.

Display acceptable behavior and citizenship. Discipline will be monitored by administration.

Complete 10 hours of school or community service work during the school year.

Fifth Grade Accelerated students must complete a school service project.

Sixth Grade Accelerated students must complete a community service project

Attendance Baker Intermediate School is a huge advocate of great attendance. We realize there are things that cannot be avoided to cause students to be absent, but we want our families and students to make education the priority and make a commitment to be at school without fail the majority of the time. Our goal is for each child to miss no more than three days of school for the year. Doctor appointments, vacations, etc. should not be scheduled during school hours. A child’s attendance at school is crucial to their success. There is a direct relationship between poor attendance and lack of achievement. Students with good attendance generally achieve better grades, enjoy school more and have fewer discipline problems. If your child must be absent from school, they have three days after the student returns to turn in a note in order for it to be excused. Parents/guardians must write an explanation letter each time the student is absent. Students are responsible for turning in their notes to their homeroom teacher first thing each morning. After six parent notes verifying illness or reason, future absences will be unexcused unless a note is obtained from a doctor verifying treatment. A student is tardy if they arrive later than 7:30 AM. Please reference the Student Handbook for additional information about tardies and absences. We recommend all of our Baker parents/guardians sign up for Parent Portal for immediate access and to stay up-to-date on their child’s attendance. Baker students strive for perfection. Perfect is Perfect - No Absences & No Tardies. Questions about tardies or absences may be directed to our attendance clerk, Mrs. Spengler. Betsy Spengler (859)745-5190 [email protected]

Baker Intermediate School Cell Phone Policy

All students who have cell phones in their possession are to place them in the OFF position upon arriving to school. If a student has a cell phone out during the day on campus without permission, the cell phone is to be taken by the staff member. The cell phone will be labeled with the date, time, student’s name, and staff member’s name and then brought to the office. It is to be given to Principal, Assistant Principal, or Secretary to be placed in a locked box for safekeeping.

If this is the student’s FIRST offense, the cell phone will be kept and returned to the STUDENT at the

    end of the day.

If this is the student’s SECOND offense, the cell phone will be returned to the STUDENT’S

PARENT/GUARDIAN at the end of the day.

If this is the student’s THIRD offense, the cell phone will be returned to the STUDENT’S

PARENT/GUARDIAN one week from the day it was taken AND the student will receive consequences

    for that offense.

If there is another incident with the same student regarding inappropriate cell phone possession/usage, the Administration will decide upon the reasonable consequences. Cell phones may be utilized in classroom for educational purposes only, with each teacher setting his/her own parameters.

    Counseling Department

Our school counselors are Emily Daniels and Cindy Whiteside. Students will be assigned one counselor who will stay with them during their time at Baker Intermediate. The counselor’s role is to help all students fully develop their academic, career, personal, and social abilities. The Baker counselors can help develop positive attitudes among students toward self, family, and community. Through classroom guidance lessons, individual sessions, and/or group sessions the counseling program may include helping students:

Develop communication and interpersonal skills needed to relate well to others.

Make healthy decisions, resolving conflicts, and respecting others.

Explore career goals, creating positive attitudes toward life-long learning and the world of work

Develop personal awareness, encouraging appreciation of their unique qualities and growth

    personally and socially.

Young adolescents benefit most from a team effort involving Baker Intermediate staff, parents, students and community involvement. We look forward to working collaboratively to identify and remove barriers that may impede student achievement. Please contact the guidance department if/when you would like to meet and discuss a student of concern. If you would like to request the attendance of a student’s counselor during a parent/teacher conference, please contact the guidance secretary regarding availability for the meeting.

    Library

The goal of the Baker Library is to provide a program that shapes our students for the 21st century and encourages a love of reading. The library works with classroom teachers to incorporate Project-Based Learning and Literacy Design Collaboratives. The library provides a well-rounded collection of books both in print and eBooks that support the curriculum and for personal enjoyment. We do hope the BIS Library Media Center is one of Bakers students’ favorite places to visit.

Baker Intermediate School School Wide Discipline Plan

The Baker Intermediate School faculty and staff believe in a positive and proactive approach to behavior management. We have developed several venues to recognize positive student interactions and behaviors.

Bulldog Pride Cards The Bulldog Pride Cards are to be used as positive reinforcement for good behavior school wide. Teachers are asked to enhance their interactions with students by finding three positive behaviors for each negative behavior exhibited by the student.

The student will be given a card by a staff member when they have been “caught being good.” These cards will be three-ply cards. One card will be given to the student’s team leader, one card will be given to the principal or assistant principal, and one card will be kept by the student.

Students will receive a prize from the administration upon receiving a card, as well as be entered into a weekly drawing for a larger prize. Drawings will be conducted weekly by the administration. Students will receive a voucher or gift certificate, and the teacher who wrote the Bulldog Pride Card will also receive a voucher or gift certificate.

Good News Post Cards Good News Postcards will be used to send home information regarding specific student behavior. Students who mastered a difficult concept, students who have shown behavioral improvement, or students who went above and beyond should receive one. These are only examples, and teachers should send home a Good News Postcard at any time they deem one necessary. Students who receive a Good News Postcard will be allowed entry into one athletic event for free.

    BIS Café Passes

Like the Bulldog Pride Cards, Café Passes are to be used as positive reinforcement for good behavior school wide. A student who receives a Café Pass can select a friend from the same lunch and eat with them out at a picnic table outside or at a high-top table in the cafeteria. Students and their friend also get to bypass the lunch line. Both students must have their ID badge to go to the front of the line. To claim their reward, students simply give their Café Pass to a supervising adult in the cafeteria.

Academic Reward Cards The Academic Reward Card system is a method to recognize students for demonstrating excellence in academics. Principal’s List and Honor Roll Cards are valid for a nine-week period.

Principal’s List Reward Cards: Students with all A’s.

Students who earn all A’s will receive various rewards for displaying academic excellence.

Bus Expectations Baker students will be held to a very high standard on the bus. Students are expected to following all rules and expectations of their bus drivers and monitors on the bus. Students are expected to sit the entire time they are on the bus in the following manner:

Back to Back Bottom to Bottom Feet on the Floor

Additional information about bus expectations can be found in detail in the online Student Handbook found at http://clark.kyschools.us, or you can call the Bus Garage at (859) 744-5620.

Car Loop Procedures In order to provide a safe environment at dismissal, we have devised an efficient procedure to dismiss our car riders. Please see the diagram for a visual representation on the next page of the car loop, and where to enter and exit. The car loop goes from a double lane back into a single lane in the student unloading zone; therefore, please refrain from passing the car in front of you at any time. The car loop is the only designated place to drop off or pick up car riders. Please do not park along MLK Jr Drive at any time. When you enter the car loop, pull all the way up to the yellow zone. Students will be instructed to enter/exit cars only in this area. Please encourage them to follow our procedures to keep them safe. Student’s numbers will be called out. Place your hanging tag with your student’s number on your rear view mirror so it is highly visible and the process can move in an efficient manner. If you lose your number or want an extra tag, you can acquire a new one at a cost of $5.00 from the front office any day before noon. When you exit the car loop, remember it is a LEFT turn only exit onto MLK Jr Dr. The only right turn allowed, is with a special pass for Strode Station parents. With everyone’s cooperation, our dismissal procedures will be safe and efficient.

Transportation Changes Any time a student’s mode of transportation for dismissal will be different than normal, the office must receive a letter signed by the parent/guardian before NOON of the requested day. This will allow the school enough time to fulfill the request, and make sure students arrive home safely. Phone requests will not be accepted. Signed letters may be sent in a child’s book bag, brought in by the parent/guardian, or faxed. Please honor this system.
