THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.

UGH, secrets! Sometimes they must be kept. Remember the sin of detraction forbidden by the eighth commandment, do not bear false witness against your neighbor? Detraction: “making known without a good reason the hidden faults of another.” On the other hand, how do you, a leper, keep your healing a secret? A leper completely cured told to keep a secret. Impossible! Not necessary!

Leprosy was a horrible disease. Lepers were kept outside of the community. Worse than any criminal, they committed no crime, they were diseased. They were isolated. This one is cured. This one was admitted to the community. Go off, be cured, and tell no one! Keep this man, Jesus a secret? Of course not! That leper has Good News to celebrate.

Personally, I’m caught between the Jesus who says: “Keep it a secret” and the Jesus who says: “Proclaim it from the house tops!”

So, as St. Francis Albert Sinatra suggests: “START SPREADING THE NEWS”!

Yes, spread the good news of St. Juliana Falconieri Parish including its Catholic grammar school! Catholic Schools week was perfect! And I mean perfect in the Gospel sense: faithful and holy. The week began with a student Mass and an open house on Sunday, January 28, including a surprise visit by Bishop Vann on Monday, January 29, Mass with family on Tuesday, January 30, and festivities culminating with “Mardi Gras Gala” on Saturday, February 3. What a week! Spread the news! What is it that the school children learn so well? Jesus – community – their faith – love from parents – and how to care for one another. Here students learn that no one is left out, that all are included, and everyone counts; that’s community – that’s what Jesus taught. Don’t keep it a secret! Practice the lessons of our faith. Be like Jesus and invite someone to follow you to St. Juliana Parish School. Ask someone; “Come Follow Me to St. Juliana’s, my kids go to school there, yours can too.”

Spread the good news of St. Juliana Parish. We will begin our 2018 PSA campaign next weekend, February 17-18. This year let’s make our goal; let’s exceed our goal of 500 separate pledges and $200,000. The assessment of the Diocese of Orange is $117,000. All donations collected beyond $117K are returned to us. With the returns this year, I am directing us to begin an endowment for the parish, the school has one and the parish needs one. Ms. Susanne Nunn from Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF) will speak with us. Beyond that, I have two ministries that I want to fund: our worship and a summer faith formation program. I want to fund the ministries especially of Sundays, and three faith formation events. Spread the news, at St. Juliana we are good stewards. We believe and we act.

Spread the good news of St. Juliana Parish. Beginning on Monday, February 19th and ending March 19th the Feast of St. Joseph, Mr. Tony Verhallen, a retired teacher from Servite and I will be presenting the Gospels of St. Mark and St. Matthew from 7-8:30PM. Bring a bible and your friends. Invite them to follow you to St. Juliana parish. Be like Jesus; ask someone: “Come, Follow Me to St. Juliana’s”.

Spread the good news of St. Juliana Parish. With the help of God, dedicate yourself to the delight of being a member of this parish. If you are leaving Kleenex in the pew book racks, or just leaving in the church, please stop. Bring other people to worship with you on Sunday or weekday Mass. Bring people to our faith formation classes. Act like Jesus; invite someone to “Come, Follow Me to St. Juliana’s”.

Spread the good news of St. Juliana Parish. We are a ministry of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites) founded in Florence, Italy in 1233. The feast of the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order is February 17. St. Juliana Falconieri was the niece of Alexis, one of the seven. Become a Secular Servite, for more information contact one of us! Google: www.Servite.Org.

Spread the good news of being a Christian, a Catholic Christian. Be Jesus proudly to someone, we all need community and compassion. Psst: that’s what we mean when we say: “Go and glorify the Lord by the way you live your life.”

Do you keep your relationship with Jesus and his community a secret?

How do you proclaim it openly?

PRAYER REQUESTS

Recognizing that the Chinese Lunar New Year for 2018 falls on a Friday of Lent, (Feb 16th) below is a statement from the Diocese of Orange that explains about “dispensation” and our personal responsibility in regards to this obligation.

Dispensation and the Lenten Fast The Lenten season calls all faithful Catholics to remember in heart and mind the redemptive self sacrifice of Jesus for the life of the world. From the earliest days of our faith, Christians have been called to special penance and sacrifice during not only the 40 days of Lent but especially on the significant days of the Lenten liturgical season, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday as well as all the Friday’s of Lent. In light of this, all Catholics in the United States are encouraged to enter into sacrificial penance during these days and, specifically, to refrain from the eating of meat on all the Fridays of Lent, with the added penance of holy fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. While this discipline of penance and fasting is serious, it no longer binds one under pain of grave sin. For a sufficiently good reason (e.g., a special family celebration, an ethnic festival, Lunar New Year, etc.), one may dispense oneself from this serious obligation and may legitimately substitute another day of the week to fulfill this penance. It is for this reason, that there is no need for a specific ‘dispensation’ from the Bishop, lifting the penance for these days.

There has been no direct dispensation given, by the Bishop, from the Lenten Fast for Ash Wednesday, February 14th.

Distribution of Blessed Ashes is during the celebration of Mass on Ash Wednesday, February 14th at

6:30am, 8:00am, 10:30am, and 7:00pm.

Feb 10th / 11th - St. Juliana School Support Feb 17/ 18 - Church in Latin America & Eastern Europe

Latin American Catholics are often characterized by their warm, hum-ble, and passionate hearts. However, in these times of economic strug-gle, poverty and violence are still major obstacles in their daily lives. Your support helps give hope to the Church in Latin Ameri-ca...especially the youth who seek to live faith.

The Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018 and ends with the beginning of the Easter Triddum and the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, March 29, 2018. In a particular way during Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy that "remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit."

The following practices are to be observed by Catholics in the Diocese of Orange in their penitential practices:

1) It is to be noted first of all that it is by Divine Law that the faithful are bound to do penance and, as a specification of this obligation by the Church, some form of mortification by those 14 years of age and older is to be observed on all Fridays throughout the year. This obligation is in itself a serious one.

2) Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. No Catholic will lightly hold himself excused from this penitential practice. If for some serious reason a person must eat meat on a Friday in Lent, some other form of self-sacrifice should be performed.

3) Everyone who is at least 18 years of age and not yet 60 is bound also to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

a.On these two days of fast only one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals on these days is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

b.Where health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL - FINANCIAL INFORMATION

World Marriage Day Sacred Scripture begins with the creation of man and woman in the image and likeness of

God and concludes with a vision of the “wedding-feast of the Lamb”

~ CCC #1602 All married couples, take special note today to celebrate your love for one another and your

vocation to married life.

World Day of the Sick The World Day of the Sick, February 11th, instituted in 1992 by St. John Paul II is celebrated every year on the commemoration of Our Lady of Lourdes, for all believers who seek "a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one's suffering". St John Paul II wrote a great deal on the topic of suffering (especially once he was diagnosised with Parkinson’s Disease) and believed that suffering was very much a salvific and a redeeming process through Christ.

Pope Francis’ 2018 message on this day is: “The memory of this long history of service to the sick is cause for rejoicing on the part of Christian community, and especially those presently engaged in this ministry. Yes, we must look to the past above all to let it enrich us. We should learn the lesson it teaches us about the self-sacrificing generosity of many founders of institutes in the service of the infirm, the creativity, prompted by charity, of many initiatives undertaken over the centuries, and the commitment to scientific research as a means of offering innovative and reliable treatments to the sick. This legacy of the past helps us to build a better future, for example, by shielding Catholic hospitals from the business mentality that is seeking worldwide to turn health care into a profit-making enterprise, which ends up discarding the poor.”

May you keep SVdP in your prayers as we continue our ministry.

Bonfilius, Bonajuncta, Manettus, Amadeus, Hugh, Sostene, and Alexis are the names with which were canonized the seven men who, around the middle of the thirteenth century, founded the

Order of Friar Servants of Saint Mary in Florence. The Church and the Order venerate them with the title of the Seven Holy Founders. They were lay men and merchants;

some were married, others single or widowed.

Servites on all continents are celebrating this

annual observance with community prayer and

festive social gatherings. As a community, let us join in prayer with our Servite priests and give them our best wishes on

their feast day Saturday, February 17th.

Our Annual St. Juliana Fish Fry is starting this Friday, February 16, 2018, 5:00 - 8:00pm and will continue for 6 Fridays during Lent.

This event brings our parish and community together and requires many hands each week to make it successful. There are lots of ways to get involved each Friday! Kitchen help with chopping and prepping the delicious food is always wel-

come Friday mornings at any time. For questions about the event, contact Mary Gomez at [email protected]; phone: 949-285-4536

For questions about volunteer hours, contact Melissa Pellicer at [email protected]; phone:714-595-6314

Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution to our Fish Fry this year. A monetary donation contributes greatly to the cost of our food and kitchen items. Please write your checks out to St. Juliana Parent Club.

Your contribution will be acknowledged on our sponsor banner and in the school newsletter.

GIVE GOD THE GLORY A curious feature of the first half of Mark’s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great “secret” revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry accord-ing to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God—not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus “humbled” himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today’s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God’s reign among the people, not so that he himself might re-ceive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today.

The loss of a loved one through separation, divorce, or death is one of life's most traumatic experiences. Many people who have suffered this loss feel left out by their church, uneasy around married friends, unsure of themselves and uncertain about their futures. This program is intended for those suffering the loss of a love relationship through death, divorce

or separation who are ready to come to terms with that loss and begin to move forward with their lives.

If you are grieving the loss of your marriage through death, divorce or separation, join us at the Pro Sanctity Center in Fullerton,

March 16 - 18, 2018.

The structure of this weekend program helps grieving persons focus on their experience and emerge from the darkness of grief into the light of a new beginning. The program helps deal with the natural grief process and offers an opportunity, through God, for turning the pain of loss into an experience of positive growth. Founded by a Catholic nun and rooted in the Christian tradition, the ministry's open, inclusive spirit serves those of all faiths.

If you are ready to move through your feelings of grief, into the light of a new beginning and hope, this weekend may be for you. Contact Kim at (714) 336-3221 or Melissa (bilingual, Spanish) at (949) 697-3352 for more information. Information can be found in the brochure racks in the vestibule of the church. Early registration is encouraged.
