July 2018

Dear friends in the Lord:

This weekend we are taking up our special annual collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. The

Church in Africa is growing rapidly, but too often there are not enough local pastoral resources to support people

in their faith. When you contribute to this special collection, you are helping people across the African continent

grow closer to Christ and to His Church.

For example, in Malawi, young people comprise nearly two-thirds of the population. And, the Church there

reflects this youthful face as well—the majority of the faithful are young people! But unfortunately, the Church in

Malawi does not have enough staff or ministers to reach these young Catholics and help them grow in their faith.

Without support, young people run the risk of falling away from the Church. However, with your generosity to the

Solidarity Fund, the Church in Malawi can train youth leaders to connect with and guide young people across the

country. Nearly 800 young people will be reached because of your contributions. With your help, the Catholic

youth of Malawi and elsewhere in Africa will become a powerful force for good and new messengers of the

Gospel.

The Church in Africa needs your help to ensure that all the faithful have access to resources to help them grow in

our shared faith. Please be as generous as you can be to this special collection.

With gratitude and prayerful best wishes, I am,

Faithfully in Christ,

+Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan

Archbishop of New York

UNCLE AL’S THRIFT SHOP

Have you visited the thrift shop recently? If not, here are some of the bargains you missed: a Vera Bradley tote,

never used, was purchased for $15.50; golf clubs for $2 each (several are left); new golf balls, 75 cents each;

prices slashed to $1 on a rack of ladies’ pants (eight of these were immediately purchased); men’s t-shirts at $1;

women’s t-shirts $1. Men’s shorts and women’s shorts are always $1; children’s shorts 50 cents.

Shopping at Uncle Al’s is FUN! You could be in the shop as some top brand clothing is being placed for sale, or an

unadvertised bag sale is taking place. Or you will find a pillow or lamp or casserole dish that’s exactly what you’ve

been looking for. Our jewelry section is very popular with new pieces being offered frequently — lovely for

yourself or as a gift.

Working with our friendly group of volunteers is also fun. We meet the nicest people, some local, some out-of-

towners, all enjoying the great bargains at Uncle Al’s. Interested in helping out? Many choices of volunteer

schedules, broken into 3-hour shifts(10:00-1:00; 1:00-4:00). The shop is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and

Saturday and is located at 3275 Franklin Avenue.

All proceeds benefit St. Joseph-Immaculate Conception Church.

Mariapolis 2018 Every summer, the Focolare Movement in Hyde Park, NY hosts its annual summer gathering known as the

Mariapolis. It is an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to spend a few days together, putting into

practice universal values of dialogue and solidarity based on the Gospel. This year’s theme, “A door that leads to

God”, invites participants to discover Mary, the mother of God, as a model for Christians today, from her Yes to

God’s plan to the Magnificat that contains the way to address the many challenges in our society.

Mariapolis 2018 will be held from July 13-15.

There will be presentations on the Focolare spirituality, Mass, life experiences, workshops, and outdoor activities.

Children and teenagers follow partial parallel supervised activities and a Nursery is available for children ages 4

and under. For more information, go to https://sites.google.com/view/2018luminosamariapolis/home

Bereavement Support Group

Addiction impacts the entire family, but there’s no need to go it alone. A bereavement support group

for loved ones of individuals who have passed from addiction, a safe place for sharing and support

without judgment or stigma, will be held at the Dutchess County Cornell Cooperative Extension,

2715 Route 44, Millbrook, and facilitated by Joan Cybulski, LMHC, CASAC-G, ICOGS, LPN. Talk, share,

support and be supported with others who understand what you have experienced. Groups will be held

in meeting room A on Monday, July 9, August 13, August 27, September 10 and September 24 from

7-8:15pm and in meeting room B on July 23 from 7-8:15pm.

For more information, or to RSVP: Laura Brovich 845-344-5565. Drop-ins welcome.
