ROUNDING THIRD BASE
We praise Almighty God, to be rounding the bend of the last quarter of the year. I want to thank God, in a special way, for the success of our October Quarterly Meeting where we approved our Annual Budget for 2014 and elected our slate of officers. All officers elected at the October Quarterly Meeting should begin to attend meetings of the Boards and Committees to which they were elected, in November.
We are also grateful to God for the opportunity of celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and uplifting the need for education and early detection. We thank God for all of our cancer survivors and continue to pray for their health and wholeness.
As we move into November, I want to highlight some of the many exciting ministries that will be going on in the days to come. On Thursday, November 7, Parakeleo, our bereavement ministry will host their Annual Remembrance Service. We encourage all who would like to remember a loved one departed by lighting a candle, to join us in this very meaningful service. We are excited to celebrate our Men’s weekend here at Mt. Zion on November 8, 9, and 10. On Friday the 8th, we will have an All Men’s Worship with Rev. Dr. Lewis T. Tait, Jr., as our preacher. On Saturday the 9th, we will have Brunch and Bowling for Brothers at the Corner Alley, and on Sunday, the 10th, Dr. Tait will again be preaching in our 11:00 AM worship. Following worship, we will have our Annual Crock Pot Cook-Off sponsored by the Board of Endowment, Gift and Planned Giving.
On Tuesday, November 12, we will honor our Veterans with our Annual Day at the VA. A Luncheon for Veterans will be held at the church after which we will visit the patients in the Cares Tower and thank them for their service to our country. Homecoming Sunday will be November 24, and we look forward to a great worship with our family and friends from near and far. The Junior League will provide a sumptuous reception following worship.
Each year at this time, we begin to bring our non-perishable food items to church in preparation for our Thanksgiving Project. We will build a pyramid of food for those in need, and on Monday, November 25, we will come to church at 7:00 PM to pack the boxes that will be delivered to Wade Park Elementary School on Tuesday, November 26. We will cap off the month of November with our Umoja Karamu Celebration at 10:00 AM on Thanksgiving followed by our Thanksgiving Community Meal in the Social Hall. With all of this ahead of us, let us continue to pray for God’s presence and power to inspire all that we do.
Blessings of the Season,
Rev. Paul

Now is the time that most high school seniors are starting to apply to their top choices for a college or university. It’s also ACT or SAT season. Just as important, it’s also scholarship season! Most places of higher learning have some sort of institution specific scholarships that are available to incoming freshman. A lot of these scholarships have the same or similar deadlines to that of the application itself. Always, always, always look through the website of the school that you are applying to. If you aren’t able to find something about additional scholarships online or in print then take it upon yourself to call the school directly and ask. One of the biggest mistakes students make is not to ask. One of the biggest mistakes parents make is to leave it up to their children. There’s no harm in doing a little investigating yourself and of asking a question. The worst case scenario is that there is nothing available. The best case scenario is that you find out about a scholarship that covers everything! Which one are you going to choose?
