WORD OF WISDOM When H. R. Starling retired Oct. 1 M missionary in Neuse

Association he brought to a close an active ministrv of more than 30 years. He had served inthe associational position for 11 years. His report to the association in session Oct. 7, therefore, was given unusual attention. It merits the thinking of Baptists throughout N" orth Carolina and elsewhere as well as those to whom :'-"''''·'{'.:':':':':'"'"' he spoke.

"Be sure when you call a pastor, you go about it carefully and get the right man," he admonished. "Your pastor, more than anyone ""' else, sets the pace for the church. He determines its growth, he sets the direction of its missionarv outlook, he leads in its study ancl achievement, he sees that the ,:,:,,:sirfrL+,. church is C\ angelistic or not, he leads in the building program if the chm-ch has one and he pre vents the building if he does not think along such lines. He can lead the church to new heights, or he can wreck the fellowship if he is not in sympathy with what South- Starling ern Baptists are doing."

That is placing a lot of responsibility on the pastor, but there is where it rests in most cases. Starling was a pastor for 20 years before entering the work where hi> was closely associ ated with dozens of pastors. He has seen churches mushroom in g1"0v. th from unimpressive beginnings. He has SN'n churches depart from the Baptist fellowship on sanction of their pastor. He has seen them renew their association with convention causes because of the leadership of the pastor.

Starling's remarks put the pastor on the spot. But he is al readv there. i\ lost people agree that churches generally follow the leadership of the man in the pulpit. This places a sobering responsibility on his shoulders, It also underscores the need for care and concern, for patience and prayer for the right man as the church extends a call to a pastor.
