Indoor ParksCouncil run

Let’s face it here in the UK itrains a lot! Which for us dryconcrete and tarmacworshipping types, isn’t thatgreat. So people come up withthe idea let’s go somewherewhere it’s dry.

However council’s have only justrealised this, probably afterkicking kids off Council propertydry spots across the nation.

King’s Lynn Council is the firstlocal authority to recogniseskatboarding as a sport which forthe most part is conductedsomewhere dry, and finally builtan indoor skatepark.

In the sudden boom period forskateparks across the UKCouncil’s have opted for outdoorparks, whether it be Plazas, Tin-Toy parks, or concrete bowls.

But the only problem with most ofthese are that in those good fourto five months of rain and cold, they will only get skated at mosta few days a week.

So why hadn’t Councils providedindoor skateparks up until now, Imean there have been privatelyrun indoor skateparks in the UKfor decades.

The likely answer is the sameproblem that private skateparksface, insurance and funding.

Well even so, here is the firstindoor skatepark run by aCouncil, at the LynnSportcomplex in King’s Lynn, Norfolk.

However you can tell that this isa Council who have not listenedto the people they ask advicefrom! As the floor is not concrete, but tarmac very similar to atennis court, I am told this willhopefully change.

The ramps and postioning arevery much experimental andwork in progress, a Vert is due tobe installed soon, something theUK needs desperately!

Give it a visit soon but you needto wear helmets. (Cheers Tonyfor lending yours!)

Contact:Tony Devenish on 01553 818002or www.theshedskatepark.co.uk

Getting ThereTake the A47 from Norwich orPeterborough to King’s Lynn. Then the A149 North, turning leftinto Gayton Road from herefollow brown signs for Lynnsport.Or ask locals for directions toLynnsport if you loose the signswhich is easy to do!

What do you think of Bengetting on Eothen?AL: Great news - I don’t have togive him decks! No it’s reallygood - he deserves this kind ofbreak and he’s the sort of personthat will work hard for hissponsor rather than just spongeoff them. Craig has got the rightidea with Eothen - its all aboutthe skating and quality ofgoods/design rather than bucket-loads of cash and that’s the wayit should be in my opinion. ThinkBen will fit in nicely.CM: Go Ben wooooo, get thosetrackie bott steez out there!!Who on the team would win ina game of skate?AL: Probably Ben but if I pulledthe nollie casper flip earlyenough it might be a differentstory! Oh yeah, and would like tolet Mark Baines know that Iwould be well up for joining hisSOS game of skate

Lets have a quick talk aboutthe team then?AL: Well, you got, Me, BenBucklee from Yarmouth, TommyMay from Beccles (well ToftMonks - arse-end of nowhereactually!) and Cloe (she don’tskate much but she’s proper hotand works harder on this placethan I do!)CM: Yeh you got that rightStart with you, how long youbeen skating and what got youinto it?AL: Started about 10 years ago.My mates started getting boardsfor something to do and at first Ididn’t really get it. Then Paulsorted me out with his old setupand that was it basically - startedoff just bombing this hill andskating the village green andthen we all got into the Lowestoftscene and have been a goodpart of it ever since!CM: Yeh I’m JUST a skater daterreally, bit sad I know. Maybe it’sjust sweaty men that does it, whoknows. What caused you to startsponsoring Tommy then?AL: He’s just really good! He’sjust constantly up for skating. He’s still perfecting his style andthat but he can skate practicallyanything and learns tricks at astupid speed. Everyone’s startedcalling him trick-a-day Tommy!! CM: Hey and we always likedhim because he’s mad, alwayswants to skate and proper ragesout if he can’t!!

Nearly the entire GraphicDesign industry is basedaround this product with itbeing used day in, day out tocolour correct photos, createamazing type effects, restoreold image to a new glory andmany many more uses.

Photoshop is a veryexpensive product to buy ataround £700 for Photoshopon its own or £1000 for theentire Adobe Creative Suite,as a result many people havegot illegal copies of theprogram and it is estimatedthat there are more illegalcopies in the world thangenuine copies.

Adjusting Colour

Firstly you’ll want to haveopened the image you want toadjust in Photoshop. Now foradjusting colours and makeimages lighter or darker youwant to use the Levels toolshown above. Some people usethe Brightness/Contrast featureto try and lighten images, however this often results inimages that are very gray andbland colours.

Once you select Levels from themenu you will get a box like theones to the left.

The box shows a histogram ofthe colours in the image. Goodimages will have a fairlybalanced graph which peaks inthe middle. Images that are verydark will peak to the left and toolight images peak to the right.

There are slider below thehistogram which are used toadjust the Dark, Mid and LightTones of the image. Pulling thesliders to the right will lighten animage and pulling the sliders tothe left will dark an image.

You have to be careful whenadjusting these sliders as if youpull them too tight together it willmake the image look reallycontrasting. Unless you wantthat effect of course.

The best way to learn how to usethe Levels feature is to open animage and simply play with thelevels until the image looks howyou want it to look.

This image is a very dark image where the flashdid not reach the entire subject. The histogram isheavily weighted to the left.

Pulling the Dark slider in a little bit preserves theblack of the sky, while pulling the other sliders into the middle more lightens the subject.

The sliders have been pulled together far tootightly giving a contrasting look to the colour ofthe image.

How did you get intoboth?

I always just likeddrawing stuff, itcame easily.Skating came abit later, I had alittle plasticboard when iwas a wee lad,

got a biggerplastic board after

Back To The Futurecame out, then got a

proper set up in 1990when my friend Chris

started skating. We usedto paint GamesWorkshop figurestogether.

Influences in skating and art,and any skateboarding artistssuch as The Gonz, Fos or NeilBlender etc?

I like skateboarders with flow andstyle, keep it loose. Biggestinfluence on art was probablyRick Griffin, he did lots of surf artand rock posters in the 60's. I likeartists who use strong crisp linesand lots of detail like DaveCooper, Charles Burns, DanClowes and Jim Phillips.favourite skate artists aredefinitely Fos and French.

Did you study at a universityor college for the art is itsomething you've done allalone?

I did an fine art degree, but Ishould have done illustration, ifanything it held me back.Everything I know I taughtmyself.

Do you find it useful (oruseless?) that art andskateboarding so often crossover, I know you did the IckleShier (Left) for Blueprint?

Yeah sometimes, I've met like-minded artists throughskateboarding, skateboardinggraphics are definitely somethingwant to do more of in the future.

What do you expect to bedoing later on in life afterskating, do you have plans fora company perhaps?

Retire to the country and build amini-ramp in a barn, then selllocal artwork to tourists.

Do you work entirely digitallywith your artwork or do youhand draw and convert it todigital?
