2004 was an excellent year for BMW in the UK. Over 100,000 new registrations and nearly 75,000
Approved Used Car sales. In short, a tremendous vote of confi dence in the ultimate driving machine.
2005 looks set to be an even more exciting year with a remarkable array of new models and
enhancements being launched. The fi rst of the brand new, class-beating 3 Series in March. A facelifted
new 7 Series in April, the truly outstanding M5 in May along with a very competitively priced 2.0i Z4.
And in October a 3.0 litre diesel version of the X3 will be lauched.
And that is only a selection of the new and improved cars we will be offering in 2005. Combine that with
our state-of-the-art aftersales operations (see pages 4 to 7) and you will understand why we believe

There have also been some important internal changes. Our aim is to do everything we can to enhance

Toby Partridge, former Dealer Principal at BMW Cooper Group, has been appointed as our new
Managing Director. We are all looking forward to the leadership and customer service skills that he will

330iTop of the range is the new 330i featuring the most powerful, and yet the lightest, six cylinder engine in its class. Delivering a maximum 258 bhp, the engine powers this car from a standing start to 62 mph in just 6.3 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph.
The 330i engine sees BMW using magnesium, 30% lighter than aluminium, for the fi rst time in large scale series production. It is also the fi rst six cylinder powerplant to feature the BMW-patented VALVETRONIC induction system.
320dA car which offers the best of both worlds - acceleration to 62 mph in 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph together with a 49.6 fuel economy rating on the combined cycle. An additional benefi t to the fl eet manager/company car driver is that the 320d is fully EU4 compliant.

‘One of London’s best kept secrets’ is a much over-used phrase, but it could fairly be applied to the contents of the large underground car park hidden directly beneath the main BMW Park Lane showroom.
This is where those in the know come shopping for some of the finest used BMWs in Britain, an Aladdin’s Cave of up to 80 secondhand gems ranging from Z4 Roadsters to X5 four-wheel-drives. There are even pre-owned examples of the recently-introduced 1 series.
Like many other people, no doubt, I’ve often ogled the brand new models through the highly polished glass of the main showroom without realising that, right under my feet, was a whole selection of cars which even I might be able to afford.
Used car sales manager Peter Adams is in charge of the ever-changing stock list and says it is not unusual for customers from as far as Scotland or Ireland to come shopping for a second-hand car at BMW Park Lane after failing to find a better deal anywhere else in the country.
“Because of the prestige attached to the Park Lane showroom many people don’t expect us to sell used cars at all, and often those that do imagine they will be premium-priced,” says Peter.
“In reality we make it a priority to ensure we are very competitive by checking the Internet daily to see what is on offer from other UK dealers. Some of our customers do exactly the same, and that is why we have buyers from so far away - they simply can’t find a better deal,” says Peter.
The used car operation has its own team of business managers who can put together a range of funding options and, in the best used
car tradition, part exchanges are welcome. Customers have driven off in BMWs having traded in everything from Harley-Davidson motorcycles to 30-year-old Mercedes.
But taking the ‘pre-owned’ route doesn’t mean missing out on BMW Park Lane’s legendary service. Every one of the cars on sale is subjected to a 120-point check at the Nine Elms after sales centre and any vehicle due for an inspection within 4,000 miles always receives a service. If a car is due for an MOT test within 12 months it automatically gets one before being sold.
“They are all fully prepared, cleaned and valeted before we put them on sale which means that if a customer walks in off the street and chooses a car it is ready to go in the time it takes to complete the paperwork - about 15 minutes,” says Peter.
“Alternatively, we will deliver a car anywhere in the country at no extra charge. I’ve taken them to Crewe, Shrewsbury, Edinburgh, all over the place. Often, the first time a customer sees their car is when we deliver it to their door, but we guarantee that they buy with absolute confidence.”
And he knows his stock, too. There might be 80 cars down in that basement, but when I asked him the mileage of tempting Z4 he instantly replied “About 9,000.” A quick check of the odometer revealed it to be 8,994. Impressive.
The cars are rarely more than two years old and consist mainly of low mileage part exchanges, ex-demonstrators and former
BMW GB company cars, with a further stock of cars being available at the Westminster showroom.
“There are undoubtedly some considerable savings to be made by opting for a used BMW and we have many regular customers who are, shall we say, ‘canny’ with their cash and return every couple of years, always buying a low mileage, used car. Fleet car buyers often do the same, “ says Peter.
“The fact is, if someone comes in and they are in the market to buy a car we want to take them out of it so we will always make them a competitive offer - this business is not about having cars on show, it is about turning over stock.”
And to prove it that his hands-on philosophy works, Peter and his team were named top BMW network used car dealers of 2003 for selling no fewer than 1,051 vehicles.
