We got to sit down with Naomi before her show at Jack’s Lounge on May 5th 2012 and ask her a few questions. When we heard she was playing a benefit show for Jack’s we wanted to get to know her. She has done lots of visual and musical arts. She has some great videos and well as some beautiful photography. We recommend that you check out the website links at the end of the article.

We started our questions off on what got her started off professionally. She tells us of when in the early 1990’s she was shipped off to Amsterdam to be a lead singer in a band. She only had 3 weeks’ notice, so she got ready and quit her job. 3 days into practice the director pulled her aside and told her she would never be a vocalist, never be a lead singer. If she was to become a singer, it might be in country. The director kicked her out of the band, but let her stay on as a tambourine player and she did the band’s books. We agree that was quite an adventure and story.

Naomi tells us she is originally from Florida. She went to Montana to do volunteer music for quite some time. From there she went touring the world visiting 32 countries playing music. She had gotten sick of Montana, the weather drove her crazy. She is a sunshine girl. So she decided to move. How she came to Idaho was also quite interesting. She said she Googled ‘good place to live’ and Boise Idaho came up. She liked that is was friendly and safe and centrally located. She said you can be any major Northwestern city within 8 hours. She moved to Boise about 5 years ago and loves it.

We asked her how she got started at first musically. She says she started writing poetry at 8. Her parents’ home was a revolv-ing door, hippies and musicians that would always come in and out. There was always someone sitting on the couch playing a guitar or singing songs. This got her intrigued with her own poetry/journaling and music. It helped her get in touch with her emotions. Contemplative is how she describes her poetry/songs. Her mom helped her get over her shyness by having her perform for others even if she didn’t want to. We asked what her favorite thing was about performing. She tells us she really likes connecting with people, making eye contact and engaging them. She really loves playing off the crowd and joking on stage. She has been with The Blue Cinema for a year now. She met them in Boise.

The Blue Cinema ranges from a 3 piece to a 5 piece band, depending on the venue and member availability. They have a variety of instruments to give their music its unique sound.

Naomi has 4 albums and you can get them at the Record Exchange in Boise. Also her cd’s can be purchased at iTunes, CD Baby and her website. You can also check her songs out on ReverbNation (link at the end of the article).

The Blue Cinema Members:

Naomi Psalm Forman, Meghan Watters, Rob Hill, Dan Castello

From Naomi’s Facebook page:

Singer/songwriter and Indie/Pop artist Naomi Psalm from Flor-ida began writing poetry at the age of 8, and began her inter-national music career at 19 as a bass player traveling to over 30 countries. She then went on to tour and performs as a solo act, and now resides in Boise, Idaho. Her influences include Sheryl Crow, Natalie Merchant, and Sarah Mclachlan to name just a few. Early 2011, she formed her band THE BLUE CINEMA, and released her 4th CD STARE. She toured her home town (Fort Lauderdale) in Oct. 2011, and plans to tour the North West in the near future. She will be hitting the recording studio again in the New Year with her freshly written songs. Stay tuned for her new music video INK to be released in 2012.

On Saturday, an unassuming man walked out onto the stage of Woody’s. He sat himself down on the edge of the stage, at level with the audience, and proceeded to introduce himself. He calls himself Psychonaut, and utilizing various pre-recorded back up tracks, pedals and processors, he is a one-man-band. For those of you unfamiliar with this artist, he is a spiritual successor of the psychedelic rockers of the 60’s and 70’s. Before standing and starting his show, Psychonaut left us with one more thought.

“Don’t be afraid to be a kid.” He said with a smirk as the lights dimmed and behind him lasers framed his outline. The show was generous with lasers and effects, and the screen behind him always had something odd playing, adding to the surreal atmosphere. Once it was even showing a clip of Salad-fingers. I have to give this guy a huge “A” for effort; he went all out. In an effort to truly capture the feel of the “peace, love, and Rock & Roll” movement that so obviously spoke to him as a child; the show had all sorts of fun interactive elements. All the tables had bubbles on them, which you were encouraged to use throughout the show. There was a finger-painting sta-tion set up in the corner where you could paint anything you desired, or anything the music spoke to you. There were even balls that were tossed into the crowd with the intention of get-ting the people involved. Unfortunately, there were a few who thought the balls were meant to be giveaways, so they tended to disappear for a while now and again.

While all this was going on– not to mention your average drinking and merrymaking, as well as a bachelorette party (congratulations Heather, by the way) – Psychonaut

continued to serenade us with classic rock songs, like Shine on You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd, and (Don’t Fear) The Reaper by the Blue Oyster Cult (which had a decided lack of cowbell). While it is true that I am no expert when it comes to the technical application of guitar skills, one thing is certain. This man knows how to rock.

Unfortunately, knowing how to rock, and knowing how to ROCK are two different things. Yes, Psychonaut knows how to play the guitar very well. His voice is reminiscent of a young Ozzy Osbourne. Despite all the elements in his favor, Psychonaut couldn’t seem to manage to make people care. Don’t get me wrong. When the show was over, the crowd still cheered enough for an encore consisting of two more songs (One of which was a very awesome original). The music was good, and the show was fun, it just lacked the supercharged energy one tends to find in a larger concert setting. Woody’s isn’t a terribly large bar, and it doesn’t lend itself well to a true rock & roll concert experience. I would love to see him on a true stage with the room and atmosphere to truly go crazy.

The night ended on a high note, with numerous giveaways from the local Starbucks and the Music Center, as well as one of the finger paintings the audience did during the show. All in all it was an incredible experience that I would highly recommend. It may not be pushing the envelope, but classic rock doesn’t need new gimmicks. For those of you too young to have experienced the movement, this is a great way to appreciate the past. For those of you who lived it, make sure you mark your calendar for the next Psychonaut show, and pack accordingly for a trip down memory lane.

Diamondz Bar and Grill We had the privilege of attending a rocking show at Diamondz Bar and Grill on June 22. They had a whole line up of terrific talent from the Magic Valley and guests from Utah. Diamondz has really set up an awesome stage area for their live performances. The stage area has lighting, fog machines, and cameras everywhere. The way they have their area set up al-lows for the entire bar to enjoy the show, even if they are not at stage front. Greg of Diamondz has really embraced the challenge of putting together a fantas-tic venue for our awesome local (and not so local) talent to perform. We hope to have a sit down inter-view with him in a future issue.

The line-up for the evening was as follows: Kiss Me, Kill Me, Dogs on The Lam, American Hitmen, and John Corabi.

First up was Kiss Me, Kill Me from Provo Utah. They came as special guests with American Hitmen. This band has some extreme talent and we really enjoyed their performance. Once of the most amaz-ing highlights was the violinist. It is rare to see an acoustic stringed instrument, besides the guitar, in a rock band. The violin is not the most prominent instrument, but it enhances the sound of their music. The combination of talent in this band brings a fresh twist to metal. A spouse of one of the band members put it so eloquently, “Kiss Me, Kill Me has a level of emotion you cannot find anywhere else.” Their music was mellow yet involving, unique but catchy. We really enjoyed the show they put on and hope to see

them again.

Biography from Facebook:

Kiss Me, Kill Me is a band that has no limits when it comes to doing exactly what they want. It goes without saying that Mik is a lyrical master mind and finds melodies that seem to have already been writ-ten is past worlds for the songs he chooses fit. Felix is the foundation on which KMKM choose to build the stories of past present and future. Controlling every movement made by each band member some say he is a Lord of groove. Prepare to sway with the stings of Saturn’s prince Ricky. Every single note to fly through the air is made by the one true melody maker, and he will seduce you with his notes for no one could resist. Unique in every way imaginable is the thunder god, Muerte . Keeping with absolute groove and the most dangerous sound ever heard by man he will make you hear his cry in your dreams and vanquish all your fears with a dance of thunder, in your back pocket. Michael is out to compliment every note to be thrown his way and make all in his realm to echo for the rest of time and space. Together Kiss Me, Kill Me have begun a journey to change all and would have the world stand together in one final movement to fulfill the dreams and grant every wish, for the power of music is everything and can change all.......

Next up was Dogs on The Lam. This is a Magic Valley band that has been performing here for a while. They have been asking us to come see them since late last year and we were finally able to make it to one of their shows. We want to thank them personally for the invitation. These guys also put on a great performance. The music was great and fresh and they really were enthusiastic in their perfor-

mance. For a “cover” band these guys bring allot of energy to the stage. We look forward to checking these guys out again.

Biography from Facebook:

A heavy passion for music & eager to perform live, Dogs on the Lam combines their solid founda-tion of musical talents & high energy to entertain packed venues & events. Formed in 2010, the band has rocked its way into the Magic Valley bar band circuit with one motto: “LET’S DO THIS!”. Covering an array of songs from modern & alternative to clas-sic rock, Dogs on the Lam brings a welcome “edge” and enthusiasm to the local music scene. Sample sound clips from live shows & full length videos can be accessed at http://www.reverbnation.com/dogsonthelam. Recently featured in a Times-News entertainment profile, the band has met a steady fan base rise with rave reviews from Facebook followers & club owners. Dogs on the Lam is more than a band on the run…they’re here to ROCK! http://magicval-ley.com/entertainment/music/article_f4e2d0b6-6ad5-5b67-91e7-ee29061db48e.html

Third in the line-up was American Hitmen. This is a band also from Utah that has rocked the Magic Valley before. We were glad to hear they were com-ing back as we had heard really great things about them. We actually got to ask them a few questions before their set. They formed the band in 2004 and all the original members served together in Iraq. They all served actively in military and we wish to thank them and all Veterans out there for their ser-vice, their sacrifice means the world to all of us. Their current drummer is the only member who has not actively served. Their original drummer stayed in the Marine Corp to serve another tour for our country. The music from the American Hitmen set was phe-

nomenal. We enjoyed all their original tunes as well as some cover tunes. They really engaged the crowd and showed everyone a good time. American Hit-men also had a unique instrument in their group, an 18-String Guitar. This thing was huge and the guitar-ist really rocked the house with it! The music was energetic, heartfelt, and rocking. The kind of music that makes you ‘shake your ass’. These guys are real showmen when it comes to their performance. The highlight in the crowd was Jolene Payne, an 84 year old retired LPN. She was out on stage front rocking out with the best of them. We all hope we have her energy and enthusiasm at that age. Thanks Jolene! You can check out their website here: http://www.americanhitmen.com/

Biography from the American Hitman website:The American Hitmen literally formed on the bat-tlefield in Fallujah, Iraq, during Operation Phantom Fury in 2004. Dan and Tim Cord, and Dan “Jay” Jarmon were all serving with in the U.S. Marine Corps during some of the bloodiest, most intense fighting that the war in Iraq had to offer. Upon re-turning home, the four Marines used their musical talent to form San Diego’s hottest new rock band, the American Hitmen. The American Hitmen headlined shows all over Southern California, at venues such as the Whisky A Go Go, the House of Blues, the Del Mar State Fair, Belly Up, and the world famous Viper Room.

Page 12: Review magic Valley Issue 12

In 2007, the American Hitmen were honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps and moved to Utah to pursue a full time career in music. They met up with the phenomenally talented drummer, Phil Snyder, and quickly gained a reputation for being one of the most talented and energetic rock bands on the West Coast. In 2008, the American Hitmen headlined the opening night of the Vets for Freedom tour, in San Diego, playing on the flight deck of the USS Midway. That performance secured an invite to the California Music Festival, which proved to be another successful performance by the American Hitmen.

In late 2009, the American Hitmen were the first American rock band to be officially invited by the Vi-etnamese Ministry of Culture to perform in Vietnam in 36 years. They opened up the Vietnam’s first Hard Rock Café, in Ho Chi Minh City, and gained nation-wide attention for their amazing shows and historical importance, considering Vietnam’s relationship with the United States. The American Hitmen were given an open invitation by the Vietnamese government to come back anytime and play for the people of Viet-nam.

From their rich, haunting lyrics to their seemingly endless energy on stage, the American Hitmen have proven time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Last, but most certainly not least, in the line-up was John Corabi. John Corabi fronted MOTLEY CRUE for 5 years, was the lead guitarist for RATT, The Scream, Union, and the many others. We actual-

ly bumped into him in the crowd and he was very ap-proachable and was just like any other patron at the show. This was very refreshing to experience. John also put on a great show and told the crowd some great stories behind his songs, especially the 3-part love song (for all the ex’s he is/will be writing checks to each month LOL!). This man is an extremely tal-ented guitarist/singer who has traveled the world. He is very down to earth and we really enjoyed his mu-sic. If you have a chance to catch one of his shows, we do highly recommend seeing him. Here is the link to his website: http://www.johncorabi.com/

All in all this was a fantastic show and we had a great time. We look forward to the many shows that Diamondz will be putting on throughout the rest of the year. Thanks for having us and ROCK ON!

Rough Draft, a local band, rocked the house at Jack’s Lounge on June 2nd. They made an appearance with Frank Hannon (from Tesla) for a special fund raiser event for the Kidney Foundation. The crowd was really rocking and rolling as these amazing band members played some of our favorite tunes. Even Joey Bravo from the Music Monster KTPZ was there giving shout outs for all the fans and listeners on the

radio.

From Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison to Pearl Jam’s Last Kiss, Bob Seager’s Old Time Rock n’ Roll to 3 Doors Down’s Kryptonite everyone was up sing-ing and dancing as the tunes kept coming. Alice in Chains’ Man in the Box, Neil Young’s Rocking in the Free World, AC/DC’s Long Way to the Top, Van Morrison’s My Brown Eye Girl, Big & Rich’s Ride A Cowboy, Clash’s Should I Stay or Should I Go, Beastie Boys’ Fight for Your Right to Party, to Ozzy’s

Crazy Train. These guys really covered the decades and different genres of music. This is very impressive. We recommend that if given the chance, everyone should go see them.

The crowd was large and very full of energy. Rough Draft even played some of their own tunes, like Nothing But Mine. One of the most appealing things about this band, besides their versatility in song selection, is that all the members are fully into their sets. The guitarists and the singers go out into the crowd and really engage everyone personally. We all had the microphones near our tables as we all belted out the lyrics with the band. Every Member of the band sang the tunes and really got into the music. They were so into the music, the drummer broke his snare drum! It had to be replaced before Frank took the stage later in the night.

Once Frank Hannon (of Tasla) hit the stage the party was pumping. He played some of his solo mu-sic before joining up with Rough Draft and rocking some Tesla songs.

This was our first time seeing Rough Draft play and we look forward to seeing them again at the different venues across the Magic Valley. Thanks to Rough Draft for putting on one terrific show. We want to see them again. Jack’s was able to raise $2500 in ticket sales and donations as well as a raffle for a trip to Hawaii for the foundation. They had the check presentation during the show. Links for the Kidney Foundation and Josh’s Cause are below. Please check them out and help where you can. This is a very worthy cause and will benefit someone you probably know and love.
