Review
• Name the four parts of a circuit
• What material is the wire made out of?
• Would the circuit work if the wire was made out of plastic?

Conductors
• A conductor is a material through which electric charges can easily flow

Conductors
• Many of the wires in your homes are made of copper or aluminum– They CONDUCT
electricity– Of all metals, silver is
the best conductor, but it costs more than copper or aluminum

Conductors
• Conductors are made of atoms that hold their electrons loosely– That way, electrons can move easily from atom to
atom

Examples of Conductors
*Conductors also refer to sound and heat*

Insulators
• An insulator is a material through which an electric charge cannot easily flow
© LoveLearning 2014
Insulators• Copper wires are
usually coated with plastic or rubber– This coating is an
insulator, making it safe to touch
– Most electrical power lines do not have insulation around them
• Workers have to use insulated tools
• If you see a fallen power line, tell an adult. DO NOT TOUCH IT! © LoveLearning

Insulators
• Insulators have atoms that hold the electrons tightly– A charge barely moves
through an insulator
