Page 2: Review of Colossians

Paul’s epistle to the Saints in Colossae is filled with information necessary for our lives as we serve The Risen Savior. Let’s

review what we found in our study of Colossians.

We started with the question,Is Jesus Making A Difference In Your Life? We see in 1:1-8 four indicators that will tell us if we are letting Jesus make a difference

in our lives.

Page 3: Review of Colossians

1. Is Jesus The Center Of Your Faith?4a …we heard of your faith in Christ

Jesus… 2. Is Your Love For The Brethren Evident?

4b …the love that you have for all the saints,

3. Does Your Faith Rest In Your Hope In Heaven? 5a because of the hope laid up for

you in heaven.4. Is God’s Word Penetrating Your Life?

Page 4: Review of Colossians

Colossians 1:1 ESV Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and

Timothy our brother, 2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our

Father.

Page 5: Review of Colossians

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus

and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard

before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing

Page 6: Review of Colossians

as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from

Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the

Spirit.

Page 7: Review of Colossians

I love the way this letter starts out. It starts with Paul in verse 2 saying that he is

writing to the FAITHFUL brothers in Christ at Colossae. Then he moves to telling the readers he is thankful for them and that he

is praying for them always. Then he states what he is thankful for. He is thankful that he has heard of their faith

in Jesus.

Page 8: Review of Colossians

7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful

minister of Christ on your behalfNotice in verse 7 we are told they learned

the gospel from Epaphras. He was producing fruit. He was not going to leave

it to someone else to teach people. You cannot teach what you do not know and you cannot know what you do not study!

Page 9: Review of Colossians

Colossians 4:12 ESV Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in

his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God.

We are told in Colossians 4:12 that he was one who labored hard for Jesus. If you were mentioned in one of Paul’s letters,

what would he say about you?

Page 10: Review of Colossians

I hope we could all strive to be like Epaphras.

He was most likely nothing special; he was just willing to let God use him!

If Jesus is making a difference in your life, you will be a changed person!

Page 11: Review of Colossians

Colossians 1:9 ESV And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for

you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom

and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

God’s Will For My Life

Page 12: Review of Colossians

11 May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all

endurance and patience with joy, 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in

light.

Page 13: Review of Colossians

God Desires You To Know His Will.

9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,God is not trying to hide His will from you. He really does want you to know what He

wants from you.

Page 14: Review of Colossians

It would be nice if God will call us on the cell phone or send us some emails.

Through Jesus, God has made one thing very clear, He values us. Another thing we learn is what pleases God. Jesus was our ultimate example. Here is something Paul

prayed for and something we need to grasp.

Page 15: Review of Colossians

We can be filled with the knowledge of God’s will.

Paul would not be asking for something that cannot happen.

Some might think if they accumulate enough book learning or enough

education, they have mastered what Paul is praying for.

Page 16: Review of Colossians

Here the word used for “knowledge” is used in a compound form which is not the normal usage for the word. In this form it

denotes a deep and thorough knowledge, it is a knowledge which grasps and

penetrates into the object. A deep and accurate comprehension. This

“knowledge” will saturate all one’s being, thoughts, affections, purposes, and plans.

Page 17: Review of Colossians

Knowing God’s will for your life is life changing.

God wants you to know His will for your life, the question is, is it important enough

for you to seek?Seek and you will be blessed.

Spend time reading the Bible, praying and meditating on what you read.

Get to know the God who saved you.

Page 18: Review of Colossians

Colossians 1:13 ESV He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and

transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have

redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the

firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on

earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or

authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

Great Is The Lord

Page 19: Review of Colossians

17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the

beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to

reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the

blood of his cross.

Page 20: Review of Colossians

He Rescued Us,

He Is The Image Of The Invisible God,

He Is The Creator Of All Things,

He Is The Head Of The Church,

He Is God’s Choice To Save Mankind

Page 21: Review of Colossians

If you take the greatest people you can think of, none of them stack up to Jesus.

Our God is great and He is most worthy of being praised!

What are you doing to show God you believe He is great and worthy of your

praise?

Page 22: Review of Colossians

Colossians 1:21 ESV And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing

evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to

present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,

Peace With God

Page 23: Review of Colossians

23 if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under

heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Page 24: Review of Colossians

When we are at war with God, it will affect every other area in our life in a bad way.

A right relationship with God is the foundation for everything else we do in life.

Page 25: Review of Colossians

When you accept Jesus, you are telling God that you are surrendering your life to

Him on His terms!

Are you ready to be at peace with God?

Page 26: Review of Colossians

Colossians 1:24 ESV Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I

am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is,

the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God

that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26 the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now

revealed to his saints.

A Special Calling

Page 27: Review of Colossians

27 To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone

with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil,

struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

Page 28: Review of Colossians

We have a special calling from God. This calling is extended to every Christian. We

are called to serve sacrificially

Proclaim the gospel, help others grow in Christ and rely on the power of Jesus

within us.

Page 29: Review of Colossians

God called you for a special purpose, are you ready to fulfill that purpose.

A life lived within God’s plan and purpose for your life is exciting and fulfilling.

If you have been struggling with following God’s call for your life, today is the day you

can change that!

Page 30: Review of Colossians

Colossians 2:1 ESV For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those at Laodicea and for all who have not

seen me face to face, 2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in

love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the

knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ,

The Strength Of A Church

Page 31: Review of Colossians

3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments. 5 For though I am

absent in body, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the

firmness of your faith in Christ.

Page 32: Review of Colossians

Is our church a strong church? How can you tell?

Is our heart strong, our love deep and do we understand God’s word?

If we grow in these areas, we will become an even stronger church that will do even

more for God!

Page 33: Review of Colossians

God wants us to grow and be strong, if you find that there is something in your life that

is keeping that from happening, I would encourage you to change it so that you will not cheat yourself out of a wonderful life in

Christ!

Page 34: Review of Colossians

God has a treasure chest of blessings that are available to you, do you want to open

the chest?

Page 35: Review of Colossians

Colossians 2:6 ESV Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in

him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were

taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

A Walk That Matches The Talk

Page 36: Review of Colossians

You can have the life that God wants you to have.

You can also have the life in Christ you desire to have.

You will not grow and mature by accident; it takes time, prayer and allowing God to

work in your life.

Page 37: Review of Colossians

Many times we struggle because we do not do our part and we do not allow God to do

His part.Do not cheat yourself out of a wonderfully

rewarding life in Christ.Make sure you are rooted in Him, built up in

Him. Let that establish your faith and live for Jesus with gratefulness!

Page 38: Review of Colossians

Colossians 2:8 ESV See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty

deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the

world, and not according to Christ.

Spiritual Kidnapping

Page 39: Review of Colossians

No one can come to God except through Christ.

John 14:6 ESV Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one

comes to the Father except through me.True philosophy will focus on Jesus Christ

—it will not put Christ in any lower position, nor will it focus on human

endeavor. (LAB)

Page 40: Review of Colossians

The way we can protect ourselves from being spiritually kidnapped is by being

close to Jesus.2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV We destroy

arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take

every thought captive to obey Christ,What are you doing to protect yourself

from being spiritually kidnapped?

Page 41: Review of Colossians

Colossians 2:9 ESV For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the

body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,

It’s All About Him

Page 42: Review of Colossians

12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of

God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and

the uncircumcision of your flesh,

Page 43: Review of Colossians

God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by

canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he

set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put

them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Page 44: Review of Colossians

Jesus deserves to be first in our lives; our lives should be all about Him!

His life was all about you!

He did all He could for you, now what is your response?

Page 45: Review of Colossians

Colossians 3:1 ESV If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on

earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ

who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Get Into The Game

Page 46: Review of Colossians

Do you want to have an exciting faith? You need to

Get Into The Game!

We need to have a focused mission, a focused mind, and we need to stay focused

on the team we are on.

Page 47: Review of Colossians

If we can implement these things into our lives, we will have what we have been

looking for in Christ!

Do not stay on the sidelines,

Get Into The Game!

Page 48: Review of Colossians

Colossians 3:5 ESV Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality,

impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is

coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.

Its Time For A Change

Page 49: Review of Colossians

8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

Page 50: Review of Colossians

It is all about trust; it is about trusting God with your life.

It is about seeking Him in every area of your life.

It is about letting God have you; it is about pursuing God’s agenda instead of your

own.

Page 51: Review of Colossians

Are you feeling less than enthusiastic about your faith?

To have the faith and relationship you want, you will need to change some things.

Page 52: Review of Colossians

Don’t you think it is time to quit fighting God, don’t you think it is time to quit

playing church?

Don’t you think it is time for a change?

Doing what you always have done will give you what you have always got.

Page 53: Review of Colossians

Colossians 3:12 ESV Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved,

compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also

must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in

perfect harmony.

What To Wear

Page 54: Review of Colossians

The Wardrobe God Has Picked.

Notice Paul calls us God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, then lists parts of our

wardrobe.

12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and

patience,

Page 55: Review of Colossians

The Clothes Make The Man.

13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you

also must forgive.

Page 56: Review of Colossians

When you take it to what we are dealing with today, we find that putting on Christ

affects how we treat other people.

Clothing ourselves with Christ will make us different people. It is the ultimate make

over!

Page 57: Review of Colossians

The Finishing Touch

14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect

harmony.

Whenever you put on a nice outfit, you need something to finish off, something to

bring it all together or make it complete.

Page 58: Review of Colossians

Put on love which is the finishing touch completing God’s holy wardrobe.

When you cloth yourself with Christ, it will make a difference in your life.

Are you ready to cloth yourself with Christ?

Page 59: Review of Colossians

1 Corinthians 15:17 ESV And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you

are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have

perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to

be pitied.

Its Time To Fully CommitOurselves To Jesus

Page 60: Review of Colossians

We need to fully commit toThe Peace Of Christ

15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in

one body. And be thankful.

Page 61: Review of Colossians

We need to fully commit toThe Word Of Christ

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one

another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with

thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Page 62: Review of Colossians

We are told to let the Word of Christ RICHLY dwell within us.

How do you think this happens?

It only happens when we allow the Word to penetrate our lives.

When we know and understand God’s Word, it fills our hearts, it moulds our

thoughts and feelings, and it guides our lives.

Page 63: Review of Colossians

We need to fully commit ourselves to:The Name Of Christ

17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord

Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Page 64: Review of Colossians

Colossians 3:18 ESV Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19

Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your

parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your

children, lest they become discouraged.

Family Ties

Page 65: Review of Colossians

The family is all tied together.

You have heard the saying that if mama isn’t happy, then no one is.

If the husband is not doing what he is called to do, mama will not be happy nor

will the children feel safe and secure.

Page 66: Review of Colossians

Can you imagine what marriage and family life would be like if we all did what

Colossians calls us to do!

Page 67: Review of Colossians

Colossians 3:22-4:1 ESV Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as

people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

It’s Not Just A Job It’s An Example!

Page 68: Review of Colossians

23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that

from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving

the Lord Christ.

Page 69: Review of Colossians

25 For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality. 4:1 Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also

have a Master in heaven.

Page 70: Review of Colossians

It’s not just a job, it is an example. Many people will spend as much time or more

time at work then they do with their family.

We are called to do our best; the Christian should not just give a minimum effort because we are working for the Lord!

Page 71: Review of Colossians

Other people will draw conclusions about our God by the way we conduct ourselves

at work.

Christian and non-Christian employers should want to hire Christians because we

should be the hardest working, most reliable and ethical people they can hire.

Page 72: Review of Colossians

Colossians 4:2 ESV Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with

thanksgiving. 3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to

speak.

Keys To Effective Evangelism

Page 73: Review of Colossians

5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so

that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Page 74: Review of Colossians

Let us not be afraid to step into the water and let us be diligent about sharing Jesus.Believers are to live in such a way that non-

believers are (1) not turned off, but (2) attracted. Every believer is to be a verbal

witness and a lifestyle witness! (Utley)

Page 75: Review of Colossians

“What is in a name!” Nothing, is the ordinary reply, but there may be much. The names of Solomon, Alexander, Napoleon, and Paul are associated with important events in history. Each is a record, and stirs up admiration, desire, dislike, or

sorrow as the case may be.

Christian Commendations and Salutations

Page 76: Review of Colossians

If the names of great men interest us, those of the good men who shared the labours of St. Paul may also do so. Those labours are

more important than the conquests of captains and the speculations of

philosophers. (Biblical Illustrator)

Page 77: Review of Colossians

Colossians 4:7 ESV Tychicus will tell you all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may

know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, 9 and with him

Onesimus, our faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you.

Page 78: Review of Colossians

They will tell you of everything that has taken place here. 10 Aristarchus my fellow

prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have

received instructions—if he comes to you, welcome him), 11 and Jesus who is called

Justus.

Page 79: Review of Colossians

These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. 12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a

servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers,

that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God. 13 For I bear him witness that he has worked hard for

you and for those in Laodicea and in Hierapolis.

Page 80: Review of Colossians

14 Luke the beloved physician greets you, as does Demas. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers at Laodicea, and to Nympha

and the church in her house. 16 And when this letter has been read among you, have

it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the

letter from Laodicea.

Page 81: Review of Colossians

17 And say to Archippus, "See that you fulfill the ministry that you have received in

the Lord." 18 I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains.

Grace be with you.

Page 82: Review of Colossians

Are we doing anything noteworthy in & for the Kingdom of Christ?

Our goal is not to be noticed & commented on in some letter.

Our goal should be serving people in order to help them along their way to knowing

the Chief Servant, Jesus who served up His life blood as a sacrifice in order to forgive

the sins of mankind.
