Overview of programs related to POPs

Strategic program 1 - strengthening Capacity for NIP Development and Implementation (resources: ~ 40%)

Outcome: Countries have capacity to implement measures to meet obligations under the SC – thus improving their general capacity to achieve the sound management of chemicals

Strategic program 2 - Partnering in Investments for NIP Implementation (resources: ~ 45%)

Outcome: Sustainably reduced production, use, and release of POPs reduced environmental and health risks from POPs. e.g. phase-out and disposal of PCBs / non-POPs alternative products and practices / destruction of pesticide wastes

Strategic program 3 - Partnering for Demonstration of Feasible, Innovative Technologies and Best Practices for POPs Reduction and Substitution (Resources: ~ 15%)

Outcome: Effective alternative products, practices or techniques that avoid POPs production/use/release demonstrated / in particular DDT. e.g. identification of alternative products or practices to DDT or to POPs termiticides / demonstration of destruction technologies / demonstration of BAT/ targeted research

§ AFLDC:Capacity Strengthening and Technical Assistance for the Implementation of Stockholm Convention National Implementation Plans (NIPs) in African Least Developed Countries (LDCs)

§ Programmatic approach

§ Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sudan, Uganda, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, UR Tanzania

§ Agencies : UNEP, UNIDO

§ Objectives : strengthen and/or build the capacity to implement the Stockholm Convention NIPs. Contribute to strengthening country's capacities for sound management of chemicals

§ Components : legislative / regulatory framework, BAT in industrial processes, reduction on exposure to POPs, identification of contaminated lands
