Introduction by Tim Newenham - Chief Executive Officer!"The breadth and depth of the Commission's work o5en surprises people and this Annual Review provides some insight into the range of the work we do and the impact we have on people's lives in Guernsey, from primary school through adulthood to later life. While sport and physical acBvity is at the heart of what we do, we are also aware of the posiBve impact on health and wellbeing that our acBviBes have throughout life. During the year we produced our Strategic Plan, which confirmed our main objecBve:
"To Promote and Support a Healthy, AcBve and Successful SporBng
Community"
Our areas of work connect together, so the programmes you see here don’t sit in isolaBon but interlink to provide more opportuniBes for more people to enjoy sport and physical acBvity. For example, our staff delivered high quality PE lessons in primary schools ensuring a posiBve first experience. Importantly too, our staff gave skills, the tools and confidence to non specialist teachers enabling them to deliver inspiring PE lessons themselves. LunchBme and a5er school clubs were provided that were opBonal for young children to aTend, which were the first steps in making personal choices to parBcipate in sports acBviBes.
From there, closer links with sports clubs were established to enable school children to conBnue their sporBng choice beyond the school environment. We have been helping to develop more and beTer coaches in order to build capacity in clubs, so they can meet this increased demand. Community Sports acBviBes have been catering for those who have less advantages and for people choosing sports outside club seUngs. ConBnuing along the pathway, our High Performance and Rising Stars Programmes provide a structured system of support, to help our sportsmen and sportswomen on Guernsey succeed internaBonally.
It's been a saBsfying year in many ways and we hope you enjoy reading through this review and reflect on the acBviBes throughout 2013. Further informaBon, photos and video clips can be found on our website. We are grateful to the States of Guernsey, to our individual and corporate sponsors and to the many volunteers, who have all contributed to ensure the success of the Commission's acBviBes throughout the year

Message from Graham Chester, Operations Director!"As I alluded to in my review of 2012, 2013 was going to be a period of consolidaBon for the Sports Commission rather than any great expansion. The work on the KGV project started in earnest during the Summer and Phase 1 was just about completed (the cricket net construcBon falling foul to the winter weather) with the 3G pitch available for use from mid-‐November. The facility was offered to users to try for free up unBl the end of 2013 and the feedback to date has indicated that it will be a well uBlised facility within the local sporBng community. Phase 2 is likely to start in about mid-‐2014 and hopefully be completed by the end of the year. We welcomed Jo WyaT on to the staff in September as our KGV Director and she has been busy in pulling all the strands together that will enable the KGV Project to be a success.
The Specsavers Youth Games once again was a thoroughly enjoyable event. A5er the iniBal 6 weeks of training at their chosen sport, the children were ready to parBcipate in the main event on Saturday 18th May. Thankfully the weather was kind to us and a wonderful Bme was had by all. Whilst the day itself is meant to be a fun day that the children remember parBcipaBng in, we hope that as a result of their experiences and the new friends that they have made, they will conBnue to parBcipate in the sport that they chose for this event. I would be remiss of me to not menBon the splendid support that we get from Specsavers and their staff in helping to organise and sponsor the acBviBes. It is something that we could not do without them.
The PE in Schools Programme aTracted 4 sponsors in enabling us to deliver P.E. in primary schools. Our grateful thanks to Alliance, Guernsey Dairy, the Medical Specialist Group and the Blue Diamond Group in enabling us to facilitate what is one of the key parts of our work. When this project was first brought to the table several years ago now, the strap line at the Bme was “to offer every child the opportunity to parBcipate in high quality P.E. Lessons” and whichever way you cut the cheese, that is what we are sBll aiming to achieve to this day. We understand the importance of every child having a posiBve experience during their P.E. lessons to enable them to develop a love of sport that will remain with them in to their adult life.
Street Sports conBnues to flourish although it is not without its challenges. However, with more joined up thinking with the agencies involved in reaching this parBcular audience now becoming far more coherent, the way ahead looks to be far clearer. We are grateful to the Lloyds FoundaBon for the Channel Islands for their support in making what we consider to be a very worthwhile iniBaBve, happen.
Over the course of the year we held another successful Bedell’s Volunteers week, Generali Get AcBve Fortnight, M& S Girls ConvenBon, Ray Lowe SporBng FoundaBon Quids In Sport programme and of course our annual Sports Award evening , which in 2013 was sponsored by Credit Suisse. These acBviBes will be talked about more extensively in the review by other contributors but needless to say we are extremely grateful to all our sponsors for their conBnued support.
This year saw the loss of Susie Farnon as a Commissioner. Susie has been a Commissioner since the formaBon of the Sports Commission in 2004 and will be a great loss to us and parBcularly me when I am trying to get the books to tally up! Rob Hutchinson has agree to take over the reins from Susie and we look forward to working with Rob going forward.

On the staffing front we said goodbye to Tom Eisenhuth and welcomed Mark Ingrouille as a short term replacement for Tom and Mark was followed by Stephanie BaBste, although Steph has been on the Sports Commission books for quite a while now.
This year will be the Sports Commission’s 10th birthday, which makes me feel old! It only seems like a couple of years ago that the green buTon was pushed and the Sports Commission was formed. One thing is for sure the Sports Commission is a very different animal to what it was then and I am sure that in another 10 years it will be a lot different to what it is now!

Strategy for 2014 and beyond!"The Guernsey Sports Commission made their strategy document for 2013/2014 public earlier today by adding it to their website and announcing it on associated various social networks. As highlighted in the strategy document, the main objecBve of the Guernsey Sports Commission is to ‘Promote and Support a Healthy, AcBve and Successful SporBng Community’ and ‘We aim to ensure that living in Guernsey is an advantage when engaged in any sport or physical acBvity. We work innovaBvely and insBncBvely from a sound base of expert knowledge ensuring that best pracBce is followed to benefit the enBre community’.
At present a number of programmes are underway to meet our main object. These include:
"-‐ OperaBons Unit
-‐ Talent IdenBficaBon
-‐ Capacity in Clubs
-‐ PE in Schools
-‐ Community Sports
-‐ Healthy Lifestyles"In terms of future programme development we aim to:
-‐ Build the pathway which links the first experience of parBcipaBon with the lifelong enjoyment of sport and physical acBvity.
-‐ Consolidate and effecBvely deliver the sector programmes as outlined above within its budget.
-‐ Introduce conBnual improvement based on feedback and benchmarking of best pracBce worldwide.
You can read the full strategy document by visiBng our website and looking within the ‘about us’ secBon. AlternaBvely pick up a copy from our office based at the Coach House, Beau Sejour Leisure Centre.

PE in Schools!"The PE in Schools Programme conBnues to evolve at pace and 2013 has been another successful year in providing the islands primary school children with more opportuniBes to play sport and learn new skills during their PE lessons.
Under the enthusiasBc guidance from Kerri Brown, Ollie Dowding, Tom Eisenhuth and Mark Ingrouille, the programme has expanded to offer children in different year groups the opportunity to learn how to lead sport and play, to younger children within their school. The Primary School Playground Sports Leader Award offers children in Year 5 or 6 the chance to be ‘trained up’ by Kerri, Ollie or Mark over the course of 6 weeks. Over 100 children are now delivering fun and safe play during lunch and break Bmes to children in Key Stage 1.
The Year 3 and 4 lessons taught over 15 weeks during the year has seen the addiBon of Tag Rugby and Netball to the sports taught in 2012. The children and teachers conBnue to benefit from the experBse of the PE in Schools team – giving children a posiBve PE experience and passing on knowledge and confidence to teachers remain key aims of the programme which has now seen sponsorship secured for the next 3 years. Alliance, Medical Specialist Group, the Guernsey Dairy and the Le Friquet Garden Centre support will no doubt ensure many more children are able to benefit from the programme.
This year the team put a keen emphasis on providing children with addiBonal opportuniBes to take part in sport outside of school. The introducBon of fesBval events has been a posiBve one with GSC teaming up with golf and basketball with the aim of providing a fun playing environment which could ulBmately improve the take up within those sports. Looking to 2014 we are looking to work with volleyball, tennis, cycling to run similar events.
16 teachers aTended a CPD course which introduced them to a number of games and acBviBes to develop team building and problem solving. The course, provided for free, was well received by those teachers that aTended and the feedback strongly highlighted this.

The atmosphere created was relaxed, fun, but also inspiring.
Think what the SC offer is great! ALL schools should really appreciate what you are doing and support course like yesterdays!
Really good. I came away with lots of team building ideas which would be great to use at most Cmes esp. Beginning of year with new class and transiCon in
mind. "The Fit Clubs delivered to children in Years 1 – 4 during lunchBme and a5er school club, have developed so that children are now gaining a greater understanding as to how they can stay physically acBve during their young years. We provide them with the contact details of local sports club for them to use if they have tried and enjoyed the sports and want to take it up outside of school.
Yoga was taught to 12 children in a primary school for 6 week period during lunchBme. The iniBaBve aimed to develop breathing and stretching techniques that would aid the children in focusing during the school day and could also be pracBsed at home.
Up to 50 children in Year 4 and 5 have been idenBfied to aTend our MulB Skills Academy. Through teaching in Primary Schools, Kerri, Ollie and Mark are in prime posiBon to select children that show a great work ethic, enthusiasm for sport and the desire to learn and improve. Over 5 sessions, the children learn and develop new skills in a challenging and fun environment.
Children in RecepBon benefit from being taught by our PE in Schools team – introducing the children and their class teacher to the Fundamental movement skills that encompass a number of different sports allows us to give them a posiBve first experience, excite them in their lesson and seUng on the path to become physically literate.
The PE in Schools also supports the sport specific development officers in their involvement in primary schools working with rugby, football, hockey and cricket. The introducBon of volleyball and fencing to schools through an a5erschool and has also been well received.

Street Sports!"What is Street Sports?
The Street Sports programme offers free sports sessions for young people aged 11-‐18 years of all abiliBes. The aim is to make sports and physical acBviBes more accessible, in parBcular for those that experience social and/or economic difficulBes.
Sessions are held three evenings a week over two hours at three locaBons on the island. Young people can just turn up, register with a member of staff and join in. Staff provide equipment for a variety of sports and offer parBcipants the choice of which acBviBes they would like to do. It is an opportunity for young people to be acBve, socialise, have fun, play sports and learn new skills.
Street Sports is delivered 50 weeks of the year (with just a two week break over Christmas and New Year). This is achieved with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, all of whom are passionate about sports and engaging with young people. One of our Street Sports assistants was one of the first parBcipants to benefit from the programme when it was first delivered in 2010 at the Les Genats session and is now part of the staff team working with young people at St MarBns.
Sessions are held 7pm Bll 9pm on Tuesdays at Les Genats Estate and on Wednesdays at St. MarBns Primary School. On Thursdays Street Sports is delivered at Les Ozouets Campus during a youth club session from 6.30pm Bll 8.30pm.
The par2cipants
Over the course of 2013, the St MarBns session has aTracted a varying number of young people each week ranging from 10 to 25 parBcipants. At Les Genats there is a turnout of on average 26 young people per week during the autumn and winter months and on average 35 young people per week in the spring and summer months. At Les Ozouets weekly aTendance is about 40 and over 60 young people at peak Bmes.
Feedback from young people through quesBonnaires and interviews reveal what difference Street Sports makes in the lives of those that aTend. In response to What is good about Street Sports? Young people say that it “gets me out of the house”, “gets us out of trouble”, “I get to play and not get bored”, “keeps us fit”, “it’s fun and gives me something to do”, “doing exercise”. These comments show how important such a programme is and why it is worth conBnuing to invest in it. The young people also reveal that if they were not at Street Sports they would be watching TV, on Facebook, playing computer games, doing nothing, siUng at home being bored. It seems the
Page of 10 38Review of the Year 2013
sessions do have a place in young people’s lives and they choose to come to Street Sports rather than opt for any one of these sedentary acBviBes.
Working closely with other organisa2ons
One of the aims during Street Sports sessions is to make young people aware of what other organisaBons across the island can offer that may benefit their well-‐being. This is done via leaflets and inviBng staff from other agencies to aTend the sessions to impart their skills and knowledge. We work alongside the Guernsey Arts Commission, AcBon for Children, The Hub and Youth Partnership staff across the sessions.
PC 161 Karl ADDIS, Neighbourhood Police Team, 2 August 2013
‘From a Guernsey Police point of view, these sessions are an invaluable resource for the estate [Les Genats]. It helps give the young people discipline, encourages integraBon and team work. All these things help reduce anBsocial behaviour and crime in the area.’
Kay Lindsay, Kindred Family Centre Manager, Les Genats, 26 April 2013
‘At first I believe that some of the young people were wary and hesitant to get involved but through persisBng and building relaBonships Street Sports now aTracts a large turn out each week and it is certainly something that is eagerly anBcipated each week.’
Paul Rowe, Youth Partnership for Guernsey and Alderney, Les Ozouets Campus, 26 April 2013
‘Throughout the evening the GSC staff run a variety of acBviBes agreed jointly with the young people. This allows the young people to develop their skills in being part of the decision making process and part ownership of the acBvity that they are involved in. Street Sports has given the young people the confidence to take part in sporBng acBviBes that they would not normally have the opportunity to take part in at their schools.’
Highlights of 2013
Some sports do not lend themselves to a Street Sports seUng and many of the young people we work with do not get the opportunity to experience some exciBng acBviBes on offer in Guernsey so in the summer we organised excursions for a select group of parBcipants to experience sailing and coasteering.
A cricket coach aTended all three Street Sports sessions across eight dates over the summer holidays. On many of these evenings cricket was so popular that it was played by young people for the duraBon of the session.
Volleyball has also been a successful introducBon. Coaches from the Guernsey Volleyball AssociaBon were invited to aTend a St MarBns session and encouraged a group of 8 teenage boys (who would normally only play football) to try it out. They enjoyed it so much that they requested volleyball for the session the
Page of 11 38Review of the Year 2013
following week, so the Street Sports team took with them the volleyball equipment and volleyball was played for the whole 2 hours.
In August Les Genats parBcipants had the opportunity to use the faciliBes at the Guernsey Table Tennis Centre for the duraBon of the session to try out table tennis.
Street Sports parBcipants from Les Genats and Les Ozouets Campus came together in November to take part in a friendly football tournament on our new 3G pitch at KGV Playing Fields.
Funding
The Street Sports programme was funded by a Children In Need grant for three years from 2010. Delivery of the sessions was made possible this year thanks to a grant from the Lloyds FoundaBon. We are very grateful for the conBnued support from the Lloyds FoundaBon in 2014.

Ray Lowe Sporting Foundation Quids in Sports Programme! The Ray Lowe SporBng FoundaBon Quids in Sports programme provides an opportunity for anyone in school years 3-‐11 the chance to parBcipate in a range of different sports for only £1 per session.
The programme is offered in half-‐term in February, May and October, and is also held during the Easter and summer holidays. This support from the Ray Lowe SporBng FoundaBon allows a range of different sports to be offered for £1, and ensures that price is not a factor limiBng parBcipaBon in any of the acBviBes.
During the year we have offered MulB-‐sports and Fun & Fit club to those in Primary School. Children in Secondary School had the chance to try
"-‐ Sports Camp
-‐ Touch Rugby
-‐ Fun & Fitness
-‐ Golf
-‐ Fencing
-‐ Fishing
-‐ Sea Sports
-‐ Archery
-‐ Sports in the Park
-‐ Surfing
-‐ Table Tennis
-‐ Judo "During the year 446 children took part in the programme and tried one or more of the 14 acBviBes on offer.

Feedback from parents
Caroline (Parent of mulB-‐sports parBcipant) 2013I am extremely grateful for the Quids in Sports Programme as my son is always really eager to go to the sessions and it is lovely to know he is using up some of his energy keeping fit and having fun. I also know they benefit from the social side of the sessions as they always come home saying they have made a new friend or met up with an old one!
Vanessa (ParBcipant of Archery parBcipant) 2013Josh did archery twice and loved it -‐ in fact is there a contact name/number to find out more details as he wants to try it again.
Jo (Parent of MulB-‐sports parBcipant) 2013“My son aNended 2 sessions during the summer and thoroughly enjoyed both. He played rounders or baseball and tennis. He especially enjoyed the tennis and wanted to do this again. Many thanks for such a valuable and worthwhile service”.
Chantelle (ParBcipant of Fit Club parBcipant) 2013Thank you for this opportunity we had never done it before my older son has already said he would like to do it again next year and go every day. It’s a fantasCc way for the children to keep fit through the summer holidays, have fun and meet others for a fantasCc price.

Brooks Macdonald High Performance Programme!"The Brooks Macdonald High Performance Programme conBnues to go from strength to strength and is increasingly becoming more embedded in to the fabric of Guernsey sport. "We are now well in to the process of preparing the 2014 Commonwealth Games team and have delivered workshops across areas including nutriBon, strength and condiBoning, injury management and psychology. All athletes have been inducted in to the gym by Denis Mulkerrin and are underway with condiBoning programmes. They will also have all received a needs analysis and acBon planning session either 1:1 or in small groups to idenBfy their individual needs and allocate support accordingly. Individual progress meeBngs will take place in the New Year with those athletes already selected.
"Through the programme we are now linking in with our secondary schools to ensure closer links between educaBon, sport, parents and the Commission. Developing the effecBveness of communicaBon between these groups is key to ensuring that everyone is working in the best interests of the athlete as a whole person and pulling in the same direcBon. ConBnued work in this area is fundamental to helping young athletes realise their potenBal in all aspects of their life. "The gym conBnues to be well uBlized and under the leadership of Denis Mulkerrin the team of coaches working in the gym has risen to five. Andy Perkins, Russ Smith, Paul de Garis and Gareth CorbeT are all volunteering to support the programme and working with individual athletes and providing supervised Bmes at the gym. In many cases these coaches have stepped in to fill the void within the sports supporBng the athletes as mentors. "Of the 36 athletes on the programme a number have made significant progress over the past 12 months. Clem Thompson (sailing) and Miles Munro (swimming) have joined their respecBve naBonal performance programmes as a result of the progress they have made to date. Both Clem and Miles are excellent examples of the drive, dedicaBon and aTenBon to detail that it is required to succeed, whilst successfully balancing their academic commitments. "Looking forwards to 2014 we expect the numbers on the programme to increase to in excess of 50 young athletes as well as their parents and their coaches. "

Our annual performance and coaching conference was another success with 200 people aTending various parts of the weekend. We were fortunate to be joined by two Bme Olympian, former Commonwealth Champion, author and Times journalist MaThew Syed, who I know for many was one of the best speakers we have been fortunate enough to have had in the Island.
"I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Brooks Macdonald who as sponsors have been outstanding. Their financial support has been crucial, however the ongoing support and interest of MaThew Watson and Vicki Eppelein has been greatly appreciated. "Finally none of this would be possible without the passionate and commiTed team of people we have within the HPP team. My personal thanks go to Steve Evans, Denis Mulkerrin, Rachel Sharp, Tim Newenham, Gareth CorbeT and Andy Perkins who conBnue to be one of the best teams of people I have had the pleasure to work with. Rising Stars!"The Guernsey Sports Commission’s Rising Stars programme conBnues to play an invaluable role in supporBng a number of young athletes that have been idenBfied by NaBonal Governing Bodies (NGB’s) or professional clubs. "Our role with these athletes is very much one of providing focused support and services on an individual basis. We conBnue to develop closer links with NGB’s and professional clubs through those we currently support. These links will benefit not only those currently in the programme but local sport as a whole and those young athletes of the future that make the decision to follow a similar pathway. "Passing out of the scheme in 2013 are Erica Bodman (Rowing), Fraser Ward (Fencing) and James McLaughlin (Cycling). Erica successfully rowed for Great Britain at the World Cup in Sydney this spring, a huge achievement and just reward for the many years of work she had put in to that point. In the Spring Erica made the difficult decision to turn her focus away from rowing and a career outside of sport, a decision we fully supported and admired. Likewise Fraser Ward has now switched his focus to a career outside of fencing full-‐Bme having been based in Truro on BriBsh Fencing’s performance programme. "James McLaughlin is conBnuing to train and compete at a high level and much of his support will now be picked up through the Commission’s work with the Guernsey Commonwealth Games AssociaBon ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Games. "James, Erica and Fraser all deserve special menBon for their hard work, commitment and the inevitable sacrifices they have all made. Without this, they would never have enjoyed the various successes they have had and it has been a pleasure to support them. "We have welcomed in to the scheme Miles Munro (Swimming) and ClemenBne Thompson (Sailing). Both have worked incredibly hard within their sports and within the High Performance Programme, conBnued to progress at pace and fully deserve to be recognised. We look forward to supporBng their conBnued learning and development over the years to come. "Lee Merrien (AthleBcs), Luke Jones (Rugby), now with Cornish Pirates, Jack Oldfield (Tennis), Johanna Asplund (Sailing) and Alice Loveridge (Table-‐Tennis) conBnue to be part of the scheme and are progressing well in their respecBve environments. Lee stays with the programme as an ambassador and mentor for our young athletes and will conBnue to support the wider work of the Commission whilst training full-‐Bme. "Our sincere thanks go to our sponsors JW Rihoy, Ravenscro5, Generali and SporBngbet without whom we would not have been able to make the difference to these young people that we have to date. "

KGV re-development!"The Guernsey Sports Commission was approached by the Trustees of the KGV to come up with a scheme to re-‐generate and enhance the whole of the exisBng King George V Memorial Playing Fields and add on supplementary faciliBes. There are 6 phases and work started in earnest on Phase 1 on 29th July with the building of a 3G MulB Use Game Area (MUGA) . Thanks to a sunny and mainly dry Guernsey summer the pitch was completed on schedule on the 15th November.November and December saw the KGV 3G offered out for free taster sessions. We have seen a wide range of sports parBcipate, Rugby, Touch Rugby and Football with players of all ages and ability having taken advantage of this great facility and giving some very posiBve feedback. Some notable highlights during this period were;-‐ The“Year 5 Schools Tournament” organised by our PE and Sport Development Officers, Kerri, Ollie and Mark. This saw 10 Island Primary Schools parBcipate in a football compeBBon, some great football skills by the Children were on show, with a large amount of spectators packing out the Fan Zone (details in this review).
November also saw Rugby Legend Jonah Lomu down at the 3G meeBng our talented young Rugby players. MarkeBng and AdministraBon Officer Oliver Tracey captured the night and managed to grab an interview with the star. Visit our website to see full details of these events.
Phase 1 of the redevelopment is complete but there is no rest for the KGV team. As we move into 2014 Phase 2 will commence with the building of brand new changing rooms. You can follow our progress via the Sports Commission website www.guernseysports.com as well as view the list of Phases.
The KGV 3G Pitch is open from January 7 days a week. To find out about booking the faciliBes, our football leagues and sponsorship opportuniBes please contact [email protected] .

Event - Bedell Volunteers Week!"The Guernsey Sports Commission organised the second Bedell Volunteers’ Week from Tuesday 1st October Bll Monday 7th October. The aims of the week are to raise the profile of sports volunteering, celebrate the work & commitment of current volunteers, inspire new volunteers and to assist sports in managing & recruiBng volunteers. Through various events held within the week we were able to deliver on those aims and raise the profile of volunteers in sport here in Guernsey.
Over 100 local volunteers were recognised in our Hall of Fame which was on display in four public locaBons throughout the week. These included the main recepBon in Beau Sejour Leisure Centre, main entrance to Princess Elizabeth Hospital, in the Guille-‐Alles Public Library & near the arrivals gate in Guernsey Airport.
Assemblies were delivered at 4 schools on the island to the older year groups, aiming to inspire a new generaBon of volunteers. The assembly uBlised a video made before the week to highlight the benefits of volunteering. We spoke to local coaches, volunteers and celebriBes who all have a message to pass on with regards to volunteering.
With the help from Kathy Tracey from the Learning Company we hosted a ‘Leading & Managing Volunteers Workshop’ on Tuesday 8th October. It aimed to empower aTendees to beTer recruit manage & maintain volunteers in their sports club.
"Our Volunteer recogniBon evening was organised to celebrate the work and commitment of sports volunteers in Guernsey. Over 50 delegates, disBnguished guests, sports volunteers and those nominated for either awards aTended. "The Shortlist for the Volunteer RecogniBon Award: Paul Brehaut – Volunteer Coach at Guernsey Velo Club Denise Bourgaize – Volunteer Coach at Guernsey Netball Club Barry Robilliard – StasBcian for Guernsey Basketball AssociaBon Richard Skipper – Volunteer Coach at Guernsey Volleyball AssociaBon. "Of those shortlisted Barry Robilliard was awarded with the trophy, presented by last year’s winner Barry BarleT. "This year saw the addiBon of a new award – the Young Volunteer Award – which was open to any sports volunteer aged 21 or under. The winner was Ceejay Merrien, who volunteers with Guernsey AthleBcs providing technical assistance with all aspects of electronic Bmings. "On the evening we were also lucky enough to be joined by Greg Rutherford MBE, an Olympic Gold medal winner from London 2012 who publically thanked the volunteers who helped support him to get to where he is today.

Workshops & Training Opportunities!"The Guernsey Sports Commission offers a range of workshops and training opportuniBes to sports coaches, sports leaders, volunteers and anyone with an interest in furthering their sporBng ability. These courses are provided to ensure that coaches can remain skilled, and can conBnue their professional development. They also enable all coaches to fulfil the minimum standards for deployment required by a range of NaBonal SporBng Governing Bodies.
The workshops are led by experienced coaches, easily tailored to the specific learning needs of the audience and conveniently held at local venues usually in the evenings or at the weekend. Event - Girls Convention!"The M&S Girls ConvenBon took place on Tuesday the 25th of June for 60 year 9 girls from four different Schools across the Island. The aim was to give 60 young women a posiBve experience of sport / physical acBvity by offering a variety of acBviBes that do not form part of the regular curriculum.
AcBviBes on offer included Zumba, Spinning, Yoga, Bootcamp and Judo which gave the girls an opportunity to enjoy being acBve in a posiBve environment. These acBviBes were also paired with a body image workshop.
The feedback from the girls who aTended was overwhelming, and whilst it served as a day off the regular school Bmetable, their comments reinforced the need to keep staging this event. The majority of the girls really enjoyed the day, including Jayde who said “I really liked it. It made me enjoy sports I would never have tried previously”. Other comments included “it was different to what we usually do” and “judo was the best” and “I enjoyed parBcipaBng in things I’d never heard of before”.
The aim of the convenBon is to empower the girls in aTendance to find an acBvity that they would want to do again. Many of the girls were excited and moBvated a5er taking part in the sports on offer, with several enthusiasBc to come back for more.
And finally a comment which we feel really summarised the day: “normally I don’t enjoy sport, but today I learned that it can be fun”.

GSC Challenge!"The Sports Commission challenge was an idea developed in Late September 2012, by Ollie Dowding who is a PE & Sport Development Officer at the commission. The idea behind the newly developed programme is to inspire young people to try a range of different sports skills and try to beat their own personal best. Whilst the challenges are centered around basic sporBng skills they feature a range of special guests, which have included local squash, football & cricket players, cyclists, netballers and Olympic Athletes. These challenges also aim to rekindle an interest in sport and different skills which previously may have been lost over Bme in older adults.
Ollie Dowding is joined by Oliver Tracey, markeBng officer at the commission who helps direct the videos each week, and produces the videos ready for publicaBon at the end of every week. The interest has been great since its concepBon in September. Some of the videos have proved very popular obtaining over 1,000 views each and to date we have produced 33 different videos.
The challenges in our second series included frisbee, basketball, football, cycling, golf, tennis, skipping and cricket.

Junior Sports Leaders Award!"The Guernsey Sports Commission recognise that young sports parBcipants want to give something back to their sports club and community, and thus offer them the chance to become a sports leader by compleBng an award offered by Sports Leaders UK. Sports Leaders UK is a charity delivering sports leadership awards and qualificaBons for 150,000 people a year, through over 6,000 schools, colleges, local authoriBes, prisons and young offender units.
Oliver Tracey, MarkeBng & administraBon officer from the Guernsey Sports Commission, also a Sports Leaders accredited tutor, ran a weekly session for the leaders at Beau Sejour Leisure Centre. In 2013, 15 students from Elizabeth College took the Sports Leaders level 1 course which provided the leaders with a recognised leadership award and qualificaBon. It helps people develop essenBal life skills such as organisaBon, moBvaBon, communicaBon and working with others, and whilst the award is delivered through theoreBcal and pracBcal sessions, learners learn by doing rather than through wriTen work.
The award is delivered over 33 guided learning hours and assessment is made upon a learner's ability to lead and demonstrate their leadership skills for a total of 1 hour. The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership provides the ideal starBng point for learners aged 13 years and over who wish to develop their leadership skills, whilst under the direct supervision of their Tutor/Assessor or other suitably qualified adult.
The syllabus is designed to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of sports and/or recreaBonal situaBons as well as contribuBng to the personal development of the learner. In June 2013 the 16 students passed the Junior Sports Leadership Level 1 course, and 15 new students enrolled on the course which started in September 2013 and is due to run unBl June 2014.
“It gives you a lot of important skills that are not only applicable to sport, but can be used in other areas of life”.
“Sports leadership is fun, rewarding & enjoyable”

Event - Sports Sunday!"The Guernsey Sports Commission held their first Sports Seafront Sunday last year, and a5er our MarkeBng Officer Oliver Tracey spoke to a number of local sports coaches it was recognised that the event was more than just a ‘celebraBon of sport’. Whilst the event aimed to capitalise on the sustained interest in sport a5er the Olympics, we aimed to showcase what was available locally for islanders to try on Guernsey.
We were extremely thankful to the 15 member sports who provided acBviBes on the day, and a big thank you to all the coaches, volunteers & support staff who helped stage this event. A special menBon should also be made to the following agencies who helped us in staging out first Sports Seafront Sunday: "
-‐ Guernsey InformaBon Centre
-‐ States of Guernsey
-‐ Guernsey Police
-‐ St. Johns Ambulance
-‐ Principle Security
-‐ Event Group Whilst the acBviBes were taking place on Albert Pier we spoke to a number of the coaches who told us why the event was more than just a ‘CelebraBon of Sport’. Hannah & Steve from the Guernsey Cricket Board offered members of the public the chance to try and throw a ball as quick as you can at a target whilst the laser gun records your speed. Steve highlighted that it is really important to try a number of sports when you are young and today serves as a great opportunity to try them and it is unique in that “all the sports are together and at the same Bme and you can choose what you want to do and have fun”.
We esBmated that over 5000 people ventured into St. Peter Port for our Sports Seafront Sunday last weekend, and a5er speaking to some of those who aTended, it was highlighted that they want this event to become a regular event in the calendar.

Sports Development Officers!"The Guernsey Sports Commission part fund a number of Sports Development Officers who are specifically employed to develop opportuniBes for more people to engage in their sport. They have summarised their main highlights from 2013 in the reviews below.
Cricket -‐ Jason Shambrook, Cricket Development Officer
2013 was a year of transiBon as the Guernsey Cricket Board appointed their first ever full Bme Director of Cricket, Nic Pothas. Various exciBng new iniBaBves were run aiming to build on previous success, none more so than the introducBon of Table Cricket. This innovaBon resulted in over 300 people in local Care Homes, the Alzheimer's Society, the Headway Group and the Cheshire Homes taking part in an adapted indoor table version of the game. It is the Guernsey Cricket Board's intenBon to provide a structured pathway of cricket opportuniBes for players of all ages and abiliBes. We look forward to 2014 with high expectaBons and a sense of alacrity.
Table Tennis, Becks O’keffe, Table Tennis Development Officer
Primary Schools InternaBonal team bronze and individual silver for Ben Foss, Alice Loveridge won her first UK senior Grand Prix and she won the BriBsh university table tennis singles Btle.
Football -‐ Chris Schofield, Chairman, Guernsey Football Associa2on
2013 was a year of highlights for ‘Guernsey football’ and showed that the future is bright for Guernsey’s number one parBcipaBon sport.
Whilst retaining the MuraU Vase along with Guernsey FC’s second successive promoBon and run to the FA Vase semi-‐final were highlights on the pitch there were significant developments off the pitch which held greater significance. The establishment of the Guernsey College Football Academy, a collaboraBon between the GFA and the College of Further EducaBon and headed by Academy Director Tony Vance, has shown the possibiliBes that exist for sport and educaBon to work in partnership to create new pathways and opportuniBes. In addiBon, the launch of the High Performance Player Pathway has provided a coordinated approach to idenBfying, educaBng and developing the Island’s most talented young football players.
Strong and proacBve leadership from the Board and Staff of the GFA in 2013 has been instrumental in not only establishing the College Academy and High Performance Player Pathway, but also in growing parBcipaBon numbers through development iniBaBves, supporBng local Clubs and creaBng a new Railway Cup compeBBon which has offered properly regulated ‘social football’. 2013 has been a beginning of a new chapter for ‘Guernsey football’, and looking ahead to 2014 the future is full of potenBal and possibiliBes.
Squash -‐ Mar2n WaYs, Squash Development Officer
The Deutche Bank squash in schools programme proved to be an excellent way of developing squash with 20 players coming from the year 4 age group alone. Our island team league now includes more club level players than ever adding stability to our whole programme. Our squash professional Chris Simpson, had his most successful year reaching number 21 in the world and also
Page of 32 38Review of the Year 2013
winning the Jersey Squash classic and beaBng Karin Darwish who was world no 5 at the Bme in the Qatar Squash Classic.
Hockey -‐ Sally Bushell, Hockey Development Officer
It was a biTersweet year for Guernsey. The Brooks Macdonald Island Ladies won the England Hockey Investec Vase, the third Ber of naBonal compeBBon on penalBes (having got through their semi the same way) but the Brooks Macdonald Island Men lost to a golden goal despite dominaBng the final of the England Hockey Trophy.
Those results have inspired both teams in their respecBve Trophy compeBBons for the current season, the Ladies having decided to move up a level, and both are in their quarter finals. In the inter-‐insulars it was all Guernsey with a clean sweep at 1st XI including in the pre-‐season 4-‐Island tournament against Jersey, Isle of Man and for the ladies, Orkney. On the domesBc scene the inter insular story conBnued with success for Investec Colombians and ABN Amro Independents Ladies in the Uptons. Colombians added to that with the Men's' League but were thwarted by ABN Amro Independents in the Cup. The Indies Ladies went one beTer recording a treble in only their fi5h year of existence.
2013 was a year of internaBonal recogniBon spanning all of Guernsey Hockey with Jayne Carter selected for a second season for England Veterans and Andrew Oxburgh also represenBng England for a second season at Under 16. Andrew was not the only success for the junior side of the game which conBnues to develop with 11 other juniors being selected for regional training under the England Junior System. The new season and year is maintaining the momentum, and hopes to be capped by joining Culture & Leisure in relaying and refurbishing the Footes Lane pitch -‐ already the envy of visiBng teams, not least our island neighbours.
Rugby -‐ Steve Melbourne, Rugby Development Officer
The New RDO has been in post full Bme since 1 Dec but worked on a part Bme bases since Sept. During this period Rugby has seen a move forward and upward with more players than ever being selected for County honours at all age groups. The Rugby AssociaBon has run Coaching CPD's every month since Oct covering Goal SeUng, Player Profiling and technical skills of Scrummaging as well as safety with the Rugby Ready. The RDO working with the Academy, Guernsey Rugby and St Jacques has implemented a Development Plan from U13 to Colts on onwards into Senior Rugby this has seen all levels starBng to become involved in Strength and CondiBoning in line with age and physical development and game analysis. The RDO is working in support of the Sports Commission in delivery to Primary Schools and for the RFU in delivery to the Secondary Schools this totals to over 30hrs of Rugby per week being delivered to the Island, and culminated in a 10's and 7's compeBBon pre Christmas. Looking forward to 2014 there are a number of touring teams coming to the Island at all levels Academy, Island Senior rugby and Women. 8 March will see the annual Primary Schools Tag CompeBBon which will be followed by a Yr2 Inter school CompeBBon. The Schools League starts in Feb and training for the Lord Jersey Cup squad is underway using the new MUGA pitch. Secondary Girls rugby will be holding a touch compeBBon toward the late Spring early Summer. The Junior Siam Cup will take place in Apr 26.

To date we have uploaded 52 different audio clips which have obtained over 3,100 listens over the internet.
During 2013 we have been keen to showcase the wide variety of acBviBes the Sports Commission deliver, and the taking of photographs during the events we aTend has helped to provide a clearer picture of work within the community. Using Flickr, a photo sharing service, we are able to upload our photographs taken at different events then use these to share on our other social networks alongside featuring a slideshow of them on our website.
Another addiBon to our markeBng armoury included the introducBon of a podcast featuring two of the sports commission staff. Ollie Dowding & Oliver Tracey speak for around 30 minutes in each episode which highlights news for the sports commission alongside featuring upcoming events that are open to the public. Whilst users can subscribe to the podcast through Itunes, they can also be listened to on our website.
