Clerk of Superior Court Training is an essential component to your success in the Clerk of Superior Court. It creates a foundation which enables and prepares you for future performance in a rapidly changing work environment. As a deputy clerk, you are charged with the responsibility of performing assigned duties in a competent manner. The 2011 Training Catalog provides courses that will aid you in carrying out the standard’s and mission of the Clerk. Standardized and innovative training courses are available to all employees. The objective of this catalog is to encourage employees to learn other facets of the clerk’s office not closely related to their current line of work. These classes provide opportunities for growth and a new perspective of this organization. The coursework presented in each class offers employees essential resources for performing job duties and creates an environment of excellence and service. In addition to specialized training, inspiring and informational classes are offered to develop interpersonal skills vital to your success.

This track is designed for new supervisors/team leaders or any employees who have the initiative to gain skills needed to pursue future leadership opportunities. The track provides leadership development and addresses core competencies critical to success. The Aspiring Leaders Track will provide training in problem-solving, self-direction and oral and written communication skills. Upon the conclusion of this program, the learner will be able to:

Understand leadership competencies and what it takes to be a leader Assess his/her self-awareness and learn new methods of communication Explore ways to interpret, analyze and evaluate information

Verbal Communication (4 Hours) In order to achieve positive results in every work-life situation, effective communication skills are a necessity. This course instructs participants how to speak concisely and confidently in all situations. Without key verbal skills and techniques, mistakes of talking too fast, voice strain and emphasizing insignificant words are likely to occur. Attendees are guaranteed to improve in their interactions with others through assertiveness, negotiating and influencing.

Coaching Skills (4 Hours) Envision a team of employees helping each other on a daily basis. Imagine a team that is inspired to further enhance customer satisfaction. This course will turn your goals as an effective coach into reality. Participants will be taught the difference between coaching and counseling. Learn techniques to instruct and inform employees while building trust. At the end of this course, you will recognize ways to build a solid coaching foundation and ultimately to see performance improvement from your team. February 15 9:00am – 1:00pm Discovering the Leader Within (4 Hours) A leader is someone who helps others do and become more than they ever thought possible. Leadership is about unlocking potential, whether individual potential or that of an organization. Learn how to be effective in not only making the big decisions, but also in small, yet extremely powerful ways. Learn various leadership styles and identify which applies to you. March 8 9:00am – 1:00pm Building Professional Confidence & Assertiveness (4 Hours) There is a difference between aggressive and assertive behavior. The latter yields respect and healthy relationships while the former can result in resentment, retaliation or offense in others. This course gives practical skills and useful tips that will increase confidence and improve assertiveness in workplace situations. Learn how to present a professional, calm and focused image in your workplace communications. March 17 9:00am – 1:00pm

ASPIRING LEADER’S TRACK (Continued) Critical Thinking (4 Hours) Learn how to use critical thinking skills to enhance your work productivity. Do you have new and creative ideas for updating current work methods? Do you think there is a more efficient way of completing tasks? If so, this is the class for you. This course curriculum will stimulate curiosity and promote participation through creative and critical thinking. April 5 9:00am – 1:00pm Capstone Course - Supervisory Skills Training (Full Day) All courses within the ‘Aspiring Leaders’ track culminates with the Capstone Course – Supervisory Skills Training. It is widely known that supervision is about building working relationships with employees over a course of time. This 8 hour course teaches the important aspects of proper planning, organization, and communication. Participants will learn to neutralize energy draining conflict, use delegation techniques for effective employee development and apply the most appropriate supervisory style to each individual and situation. This track is structured to provide employees with the skills to improve the communication skills in the workplace and gain the confidence to face an audience. This track is required for in-house supplemental facilitators that will be members of the Training Bureau. Attendees will learn techniques to design and deliver successful training courses. Feedback Essentials (2 Hours) From tracking performance, to managing goals, our ability to give and solicit feedback is critical. Feedback is the cornerstone to almost every communication process. This course explores how to give and receive feedback in an effective manner. Learn to use positive assessment as a great way to motivate and develop self performance. TRAIN-THE-TRAINER TRACK (Continued) How Adults Learn (2 Hours) Learning can be defined as the act, process, or experience of gaining knowledge or skills. Adults learn in various ways for several reasons. Many evolve in their learning and training based on life experiences. Others are self directed or problem-centered. Learn different factors that motivate adults to learn new job skills or functions. Enable the adult work force to enhance their environment by becoming aware of an individual’s inclination to learn. February 16 9:30am – 11:30am Public Speaking - Minimize Nervousness & Anxiety (2 Hours) According to the book of lists, the fear of speaking in public is the #1 fear of all fears. The fear of dying is #7! Everyone, even experienced speakers, has some anxiety when speaking in front of a group of people. Fear is perfectly normal and you are not alone. This course provides a concrete approach to mastering the fear of public speaking. Techniques will be shared that can be used in and outside the work environment. TRAIN-THE-TRAINER TRACK (Continued) Create Winning Presentations (2 Hours) Discover the latest trends in instructional design. Learn step-by-step techniques to improve as a facilitator. This course will show you how to make your courses more interesting and lively. You’ll build confidence as you engage with your audience with validated course material, PowerPoint and usage of audio visual aides. Keeping your audience focused on the material is crucial to the success of your presentation. This course will provide learners with guidelines and suggestions for the use of fonts, colors, and graphics when preparing PowerPoint presentations for training courses. PowerPoint as a medium is designed to ENHANCE your training, not BE the training. Take this course if you would like to get your point across to your audience and deliver a knockout presentation! April 13 9:30am – 11:30am Instructional Techniques for New Trainers (2 Hours) To create a productive and stimulating learning environment, there are basic skills that every facilitator needs. This course prepares and assists facilitators who will conduct training courses by providing key “survival” skills. You will learn how to: • Prepare to facilitate a course • Present the content and examples to make it a successful learning experience • Provide instructions in a manner that leaves the learner with an enduring thought about their

experience that makes them want to continue using the skills they've learned. Attendees will learn how to establish an effective relationship with learners, deliver lectures properly, administer exercises and tests that will hold participants' attention and interest.

This track is structured to provide all members of the COSC team with the necessary tools to ensure job success. One of the most critical tools is the COSC standard policies and procedures. Courses are designed to educate each employee of office and county-wide policy changes. Attendees will also learn techniques to provide service to customers with disabilities or those from diverse backgrounds. At the end of the program, the learner will be able to:

Perform job duties with more clarity and serve customers with efficiency and professionalism Develop an appreciation for a multigenerational and diverse workforce Promote a respectful working environment

Generational Diversity Issues in Communication (2 Hours) Many of us take our relationships for granted and move on until one fine day we wake up to realize, we don't have the connection any more – Sri Hari, The Communications Guy. This is a great course to improve your ability to communicate with all generations – in and outside of work. Learn tips to effectively communication and strengthen your existing relationships. Form positive bonds in future interactions and prevent misunderstandings. January 20 9:30am – 11:30am Valuing Team Diversity (2 Hours) Recognizing a diverse group of employees simply means that all the people are unique in their own way. Their differences could consist of their method of working (independent or group worker), level of dependability, cultural background, personality, religious beliefs, and the list goes on. When people value diversity, they recognize and respect the fact that people are different and that these differences are generally a good thing. As our society becomes more diverse, it is important that our workforce learns to value and use diversity to the greater good. February 17 9:30am – 11:30am

POLICY & DIVERSITY TRACK (Continued) Language Access Services (2 Hours) This course is designed to identify components that are part of the language access policy and procedures to ensure that persons with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) and/or those who are Sensory Impaired (SI), meaning visual or hearing impaired; have meaningful access to language services. LEP/SI individuals may come in contact with court personnel via the phone, counter or other means. Staff will learn how to assist individuals and provide access through the use of auxiliary services or other means. March 15 9:30am – 11:30am

Workplace Harassment (2 Hours) The Clerk of Superior Court strictly enforces the Workplace Anti-Harassment Policy. In an effort to foster a working environment that enhances productivity and promotes the mutual respect and personal dignity of all COSC employees, the Clerk is committed to a policy that ensures employees are not subjected to harassment, bullying or hostility. Know your rights and gain techniques to resolve issues. April 14 9:30am – 11:30am

Sensitivity Training (2 Hours) Discrimination - especially subtle discrimination and harassment - continues to thrive in our workplace. Everyday stereotypes and assumptions about our differences are the basis for most discrimination claims. This course focuses on issues relating to people with disabilities and creates a general awareness about persons with physical and mental disabilities. May 19 9:30am – 11:30am Capstone Course - Bridging the Generational Gap (4 Hours) Discover the missing link and bridge the generational gap in your work environment. Identify the reality of the generational gap at work; define four different generational cultures; decode generational miscommunications; and recognize and resolve real-life intergenerational issues. This is a unique off-site course conducted at a local nursing home facility structured with a hands-on approach. Classes are designed to enhance your experience and understanding of generations so that you can be more effective in work and family situations. The term IT (Information Technology) extends beyond computing to include telecommunications and office equipment. Advances in technical knowledge have prompted a growing movement towards more automated procedures of work. As a result, workforces must develop more agile skills to carry out a wider range of functions. In this track, participants will learn:

Microsoft Word (Beginner Level) (Training Bureau) The participant will explore Word 2003, work with the Office assistant, use basic document skills and text editing, and check spelling and grammar. Participant will also work with document views and printing documents. Other skills taught will be formatting characters, paragraphs and documents; using styles; setting tabs; and indenting paragraphs; using numbering and bullets; working with headers and footers; and using section breaks. March 29 9:00am – 4:00pm

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRACK (Continued) Microsoft PowerPoint (Beginner Level) (Training Bureau) The participant will explore MS PowerPoint in this training. Participants will learn guidelines and suggestions for using fonts, colors, and graphics. This course will offer basic steps on how to manipulate slides, and enhance presentations with various custom effects. April 27 9:00am – 4:00pm E-mail Management (2 Hours) Are you one of those busy people who rely on e-mail to organize your day? The amount of business information, documents, and e-mail is overwhelming. But you can manage and organize your e-mail to prioritize all of that information. It's time to take control. It's time to work smarter, not harder. Learn the four simple email management rules to help you keep control of your inbox. Get the latest tips on using Microsoft Outlook to schedule appointments, make a task list and so much more!!!! May 12 9:30am – 11:30am Microsoft Excel (Beginner Level) (Training Bureau) The participant will learn how to use basic workbook (spreadsheet skills: work with ranges; create simple formulas and how to copy and move data. The participant will also learn how to use the Office Assistant, setup pages and printing worksheets. Also taught in this course will are the basic skills needed to prepare worksheets for publication. June 1 9:00am – 4:00pm Microsoft Access (Beginner Level) (Training Bureau) The participant will be introduced to the basic skills necessary for using and presenting data in Access 2003. These skills will include creating, working with and editing tables; finding, filtering and printing data; creating relationships between tables, using simple queries; modifying query results and analyzing tables. Also participant will be creating basic forms, reports and using the online help. June 28 9:00am – 4:00pm

Career Development takes the skills of an employee and applies them to continual learning, taking risks and finding ways to contribute to the organization. This class is designed for you to re-evaluate your professional aspirations and offer tips on how to achieve them. The ultimate goal of this course is to discover the optimum fit between you and an occupation.

January 27 9:30am – 11:30am How to Keep Sane During Change Change management with respect to people is a structured approach to change in individuals, teams, organizations and societies. Change management only occurs through the collective action of the employees and management. However, leaders must have an understanding of the human side of change management — the alignment of a company’s culture, values, people, and behaviors. Using the techniques offered in this course as a systematic, comprehensive framework, you’ll understand what to expect, how to manage personal change, and how to engage the entire organization in the process.

February 9 9:30am – 11:30am Stress Management When people feel stressed by something going on around them, a chemical reaction takes place. Chemicals released in the blood as a result of stress provide a body with energy and strength. This can be both a good or bad reaction depending on the type of catalyst. Managing this reaction is necessary to work productivity and mental health. This course outlines key factors in determining stress indicators at work and allows you to practice coping skills. Everyone serving internal or external customers needs these fundamental skills in order to provide optimal customer service! This track will enable the learner to see how every interaction is an opportunity to provide uncompromising service at every point of delivery. At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

Identify 10 ways to provide stellar customer service Explain four basic principles of communication (verbal and non-verbal) and active, empathetic

listening. Describe the 8 steps to effective conflict resolution

Handling Customer Complaints The focus of this course is to help employees deal with irate customers in a polite, friendly and positive manner. Technique is provided that enables the employee to reach a solution that best suits both the organization and the customer. Obtain strategies that effectively diffuse difficult customer situations. Learn how to not getting emotionally hooked with difficult or angry customers.

January 13 9:30am – 11:30am Fuel Your Team (4 Hours) For teamwork to be successful, teams and individual team members need to have clear, shared goals; a sense of commitment and the ability to work together; mutual accountability; access to needed resources and skills; and other elements of effective teams. While successful teamwork can be rewarding in itself, teamwork should focus on meeting the performance standards and mandates of the Clerk’s office. Do you want to improve your sense of style and use it to your advantage in the work place? Consideration, respect and honesty are the foundation for business and personal success. Learn how to look your best, do your best and be your best. This course provides the essentials of etiquette with a stylish twist.

February 10 9:30am – 11:30am Get Over It – Get Organized A cluttered desk is a sign of poor organizational skills. Poor organizational skills show a lack of appreciation for the official documents of the Clerk’s office. Learn the importance of work station integrity. Participants will also gain an understanding of the advantages to being an organized person in the workplace and differentiate between being need and organized.

March 10 9:30am – 11:30am Proper Use of Language (2 Hours) A number of studies have consistently demonstrated that those who have an advanced knowledge of the English language are much more likely to advance their careers. No matter what career you choose, whether it is Engineering or History, having a powerful command of the English language will greatly increase your odds of success. Ignoring the importance of using proper language can even affect your economic success. This course will provide information on the correlation between Standard English and your career, how to overcome barriers and the importance of increasing your vocabulary. April 26 9:30am – 11:30am Written Communication (2 Hours) It is a known fact that the manner in which one speaks is reflected in their writing. To be truly successful in any role, you need to utilize writing skills to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, customers and others outside the work force. Effective communication (written and oral) leads to greater productivity, increased morale and success. This course is recommended for those who have previously taken the ‘Proper Use of Language’ class.

CUSTOMER SERVICE TRACK (Continued) Listening & Non-Verbal Communication (2 Hours) Studies have shown that when others listed to us, only 7% of what they “hear” are words. That means that 93% of what they “listen” to is our tone of voice and body language. Learn common applications and misapplications of “The 93% Rule” in personal and professional interaction. – Author Greg Gray. Nonverbal messages are an essential component of communication. Learn how non-verbals convey a message louder than verbal or written communication. This course is based on “The 93% Rule” by author Greg Gray.

June 9 9:30am – 11:30am Sign Language (2 Hours) Sign language is a way to communicate with to people who can't hear with your hands. Signing is like being a thesaurus. Unlike the spelling in the English language where one spelling is equal to one word, sign language is different. There are many signs that can mean more than one word. This course is an introduction to using the American Sign Language (ASL) in order to communicate with deafened customers. Dates to be announced Spanish for the Workplace (2 Hours) As Georgia's population becomes more diverse, the need for quality court interpretation in Spanish and several other languages continues to grow. The large increase in the Limited English Proficient (LEP) population and the shortage of qualified interpreters creates problems for our courts for which there are no easy answers. This course is an introduction to Spanish terms and phrases that will be commonly used in the court and court offices. This course will provide baseline knowledge to assist Hispanic customers. Evacuation Made Easy

Emergency evacuations today are far more distinct and critical in comparison to the ‘grammar school’ fire drills of yesteryear. Evacuation drills are not just a required nuisance. They serve a very important role in responding to an emergency. Although the seriousness of an emergency can be daunting, the act of evacuation can be simplified into clear, delineated steps. This course is designed to review evacuation procedures for various emergencies that could occur.

Dates to be announced Unforeseen Illness & Injury at Work (Health & Safety Course) What is the first thing that should be done if an employee becomes critically ill at work? Who should be called? This course will answer these questions and more. Learn how to remain calm in a potentially overwhelming situation. Discover office policy, procedures and ways to avoid further delay of medical attention and/or personal injury. Dates to be announced

Emergency First Aid & AED at Work This course will provide delegates with all the knowledge and skills they will require to provide basic life saving and first aid techniques in an emergency situation. Both theoretical and practical sessions will be used in this training. Learn to administer appropriate first aid to minor injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises as well as the use of available equipment. Dates to be announced Shelter-In-Place In the event of an emergency, such as the accidental or intentional release of dangerous goods into the atmosphere, employees in the threatened area may be instructed to shelter-in-place. This is a precaution aimed to enhance safety while remaining indoors. Attendees will learn the organization’s plans for dealing with a hazardous materials emergency, designated shelters and what to do if affected by a hazardous material. Dates to be announced Emergency Preparedness for Special Needs People with special needs must be considered during emergency and preparedness planning. It is important to remember that the usual methods of support and assistance may not be available for some time during an evacuation or after a disaster has occurred. This course is designed to:

Give strategies to employees with disabilities and to develop a personal plan and network of support in case of emergency

Inform all employees of office protocol in assisting fellow colleagues with disabilities Dates to be announced Communication Plan

Getting the message out following an emergency situation could present many challenges. The purpose of a communication plan is to reduce potential challenges and inform employees of proper protocol. Employees who are well informed and prepared tend to better manage an emergency situation. This course is designed to share the COSC Communication Plan with employees, educate on various emergency situations and what to do if an event occurs.
