1. Control of Water in the Aircraft Fuel Tanks
A. Reason for the Job
- To examine for water in the aircraft fuel tanks.
- To drain water from the aircraft fuel tanks.
- To sample the fuel for microbiological contamination.
NOTE : These procedures are applicable if the outside airtemperature is more than 0 deg C. If the outside airtemperature is less than 0 deg C. and you cannotdrain the fuel/water because of ice in the tanks, then do the cold weather maintenance procedures(Ref. 12-31-28, P. Block 201 ) .
NOTE : If possible, do the examination for water in theaircraft fuel tanks before you refuel the aircraft. As an alternative, you must wait for a minimum of 30minutes after a refuel has been completed before youdo the examination for water or drain water from theaircraft fuel tanks.

(a) Obey the fuel safety procedures (Ref. 28-00-00,P. Block 301 ) .
(b) Drain a fuel and water sample from each fuel tank(Ref. Para. 1.C.(a)). You must use a differentsample container for each fuel tank.
NOTE : Do not put additives in the samples toshow the water contents.
NOTE : Before you collect the samples, read themanafacturers instructions in the testkit. Make sure you use a samplecontainer that is specified and is cleanand dry before use.An incorrect, dirty sample container cangive an unwanted effect to the results.
(c) Put the sample(s) into a transparent fuelresistant plastic container(s) with a minimumcapacity of 1.0 Liter (0.2641 USgal) and:
- seal the container(s)
- make sure you can see the free water and fuel inthe sample(s) (for the MICROBMONITOR2 kit or theFUELSTAT RESINAE kit).
(d) Identify each sample with a label that shows:
- the aircraft number
- the time and date of the sample
- the fuel tank the sample came from
- all additives you know about.
(e) Keep the sealed sample containers in a coolprotected area.
NOTE : After the test samples are collected, microbiological contamination in thesample could multiply or die. It isrecommended that samples are testedbefore 6 hours, but no later than 24hours.AIRBUS recommends that the samples aretested in no more than 6 hours.
NOTE : Choose one microbial test kit for thecomplete procedure.Do not compare results between themicrobial detection kits.

(2) Sample Test - MICROBMONITOR2 Test Kit Procedure.
(a) Do one of the steps that follow:
- Use the MICROBMONITOR 2 TEST KIT ECHAMICROBIOLOGY UK (CAGE CODE OHZY6) (and themanafacturers instructions) do a test on theWATER and FUEL samples,
OR
- Send the WATER and FUEL samples to an approvedlaboratory.
- They will use the Institute of PetroleumProcedure IP 385 to provide the levels of fuelcontamination.
(b) Do a check of the results:
NOTE : If you only do one test, it can give youan incorrect indication of the fueltanks. If a test shows contamination,(moderate or heavy) do the test again,(in not more than 10 days) before youremove the aircraft from service.Use the same test kit for the secondtest.
1) Negligible contamination:
a) The contamination is negligible if:
- the WATER sample contents has 1000 CFU/milli liter (Colony forming Units) orless.
- the FUEL sample contents has 4000 CFU/Liter or less.
b) Continue to monitor the fuel tanks atthe scheduled inspection interval.
c) This procedure is now complete.
2) Moderate contamination:
