Edexcel GCSE Shortcourse
Final revision tips
Overview of this session
• Exam paper – what to do and what to answer.
• Things you need to remember.• Tips during the exam.• Review of this session.
I can see the exam paper. What should I do first?
• Don’t panic. Despite the song on the previous slide (if you can hear it) it is not the end of the world as we know it!
• Spend a minute reading the instructions on the front page. Make sure you understand which questions you are going to answer. They are:– Managing the Environment– Managing Hazards– Managing Tourism
Further tips and hints
• Go through the exam questions highlighting the command words (the ones that tell you what to do.)– E.g. ExplainExplain how the level of development
in a MEDC…– DescribeDescribe the effects of the volcanic
eruption on your chosen case study.
Further tips and hints part deux
• Look at the number of marks available for each question. This gives you a clue about how much information is needed for a case study.
• For each section, the first few questions are point marked and are usually about some provided information. READ THE PROVIDED INFORMATION READ THE PROVIDED INFORMATION CAREFULLYCAREFULLY – quite a few marks are provided for you if you can select information from the source and answer in the right place!
• Try to spend a maximum of 35 minutes on each section – each question has 30 marks available and should take roughly the same time.
Further tips and hints part 2 ½
• Make sure that you have the following with you:– Pens (more than one in case one fails to work.)– Pencils (a pencil sharpener would be useful!)– Ruler (often there is a question where you need
to measure something then plot it on a map.)– Rubber (we all make mis-steaks)– A Highlighter – to highlight command words.
Further tips and hints (the final frontier)
• Finish early – go over your answers. Check that it makes sense when you read it.
• Make sure that if you have started with an MEDC case study that you haven’t switched half way through and started talking about an LEDC.
• Check any plottings/measurements etc.• Check you haven’t missed any questions out
– sometimes they can be at the bottom of an information page and are quite easy to miss!
What next???
• You should have some sheets in front of you – one being a commands words sheet that I have previously given you. The others are case study sheets.
• In pairs test each other on:– Command words – what should you do if
the question has it in?– Case studies. What are they about and is
it for LEDC/MEDC?
Final Brumby Geography PowerPoint slide…(Hurray!)
• If you really cannot answer a question leave it till the end – don’t waste time that you may wish you had later. Come back to it after you have answered the other questions.
