Aún tengo en mi cabeza el recuer-do de estar en la habitación de Gaby escuchando el proyecto que querían arrancar con Damián: una revista de viajes por Argentina. Querían saber qué me parecía y cómo se podía ha-cer. Sonaba genial: viajar, conocer gente, ganar plata (?). Me prendí a tirar nombres con ellos hasta que salió “054”. Nos quedamos callados. Unas cuantas horas después me lla-ma Gaby diciéndome “me encanta, ¿te sumás?”.
Era principios del 2002 y la se-milla “054” ya estaba plantada.
Enseguida reclutamos voluntarios. Matías nos ayudó con el primer bo-ceto (ver imagen), y se quedó un tiempo más armando el concepto gráfico. Se sumó Laura como fotó-grafa, Sergio como traductor, Rael como humorista gráfico, quien lue-go sería el diseñador y uno de los pilares fundamentales de la revista hasta hoy, y varios amigos más dan-do una mano.
Escribimos algunas notas, les me-timos fotos nuestras, fotos de ami-gos, fotos de internet, hasta fotos producidas especialmente y en pocos
días estábamos en imprenta.Así fue como el 27 de julio de
2002 recibimos emocionados la pri-mera edición de la Revista 054. Un hijo. Estábamos orgullosos.
Las cosas se fueron dando mági-camente. La idea de la revista gus-taba y los anunciantes se iban su-mando de a poco. Pero a medida que crecíamos, la dedicación y las necesidades también crecían. Algu-nos fueron quedando en el camino y otros se iban sumando, como Darío. Su ingreso nos dió un nuevo aire, empuje, energía. Nos hizo pensar que se podía hacer de 054 algo gran-de.
Y acá estamos, 10 años después, con el mismo espíritu de siempre y con miles de kilómetros recorridos por este increíble país.
Disfrutamos mucho lo que hace-mos. Y disfrutamos mucho de que cada vez sea más la gente que nos sigue.
Hay muchas ideas dando vueltas. Se vienen nuevos desafíos.
Gracias a todos los que alguna vez pasaron por 054. Gracias a todos los que nos siguen.

El quebracho rogó ayuda a los dioses. Cuenta la leyenda que era un árbol de madera blanda, muy fácil de tallar, muy buscada por los aborígenes de la zona (noreste argentino, Paraguay, Bolivia, sur de Brasil) que lo llamban Paaj. Y los dioses no sólo lo dotaron de su legendaria dureza, también le dieron lo que se conoce como flechadura o sarna del quebracho: sus flores tienen gran capacidad alergénica y pueden provocar serios problemas en la piel.
Pero los dioses no detuvieron al hombre blanco. Aquella dureza que lo defendía se convirtió en su talón de Aquiles. Quebracho viene de la expresión “quiebra hachas”. Pero bien valía la pena el esfuerzo de derribarlo: madera ideal para hacer postes o durmientes para las
vías férreas, excelente tanino para el curtido del cuero, leña perfecta por el perfumado calor que genera.
No hubo dioses que lo defendiaran de la tala indiscriminada. En la primera mitad del siglo XX se talaron más de 500 millones de quebrachos. Se perdió el 85% de lo que fue un gigantesco bosque. Para colmo, para alcanzar sus más de 20 metros de alto, el quebracho necesita entre 100 y 150 años de crecimiento.
En 1948 se promulgó una Ley de Bosques que llegó tarde. La ley de 1956 que declara al Quebracho Colorado Chaqueño como árbol nacional, pondera su aporte al de-sarrollo del país sin condenar que ese aporte lo haya dejado al borde de su desaparición. Al día de hoy su depredación no cesa. Ya no hay dioses que defiendan al quebracho.

Bermúdez desechó las ramitas húmedas y amontonó las otras junto a unos bollos de papel en el brasero de la parrilla del patio. La idea, comentó serio, era sumarle unas maderas más grandes e ir acomodando el carbón sin tapar el fuego. Pero entonces se aproximó Ferrarotti, exhibió una botella de vidrio y comenzó a rodearla con trozos de diario enrollado. Explicaba la importancia del oxígeno en la combustión y se disponía a encender su “volcán” cuando se oyeron los pasos de Torres. Traía un cajón de frutas, convenientemente vacío. Lo apoyó en el brasero boca abajo, puso la bolsa de carbón encima y prendió un fósforo. Sin embargo, a Coccimano esto le pareció poco, así que extrajo del bolsillo interior de su saco un frasco de alcohol y roció con él las maderas y papeles. Gorostiaga acompañó la acción aplicando aire con un fuelle, que enseguida Pérez reemplazó por un ventilador turbo.
Sarlanga estaba impaciente, así que abrió la tapa del bidón de nafta que siempre llevaba consigo y mojó las adyacencias de la parrilla. Y por qué no del patio.
Mientras se desplazaba a zonas más seguras, Arregui descubrió un par de garrafas de gas y las hizo rodar hacia el corazón de la fogata. Las explosiones eran prometedoras, pero no les daban garantías aún de un calor suficientemente duradero. Y ahí fue cuando Balaguer abrió la caja de luz y con gran habilidad provocó un cortocircuito que arrimó chispas a cortinados y colchones para alimentar aún más la hoguera desde diversos rincones de la casa.
¿Sería suficiente? Por las dudas, Savarese ingresó a la vivienda con un par de árboles que acababa de hachar en la vía pública y que colaboraron con el crecimiento de las llamas, aunque no tanto como el hecho de que Fariña, Libonatti y Palacios procedieran a dar vuelta tres coches estacionados frente a la casa. Sus coches.
Los bomberos hicieron lo propio con la autobomba en la que acababan de llegar: su tanque de combustible generó un estallido escuchado a varios kilómetros a la redonda.
Bermúdez contempló el espectáculo y levantó el pulgar de su mano izquierda, la que no se había carbonizado, en señal de apro-bación. Anunció que ese era un buen fuego para arrancar con las achuras.
Pero fue entonces cuando un ruido ensordecedor hizo que todos levantaran la vista y vieran el preciso instante en que una inmensa bola incandescente, que nadie tuvo tiempo de deno-minar “meteorito”, colisionaba con el planeta provocando una oleada de gases y llamaradas que arrasaron con toda forma de vida.
Tiempo después, cuando esa esfera alguna vez conocida como la Tierra adoptó el conveniente color rojizo, un ser inefable y de existencia discutible puso sobre ella una especie de enrejado horizontal y depositó allí unos chorizos de pura carne de cerdo. El calor era perfecto. Pero lo mejor era que no había nadie para opinar por encima de su hombro.

Más de 80 años de vigencia. Decir que Patoruzú es el más popular de los personajes de la historieta argentina, no tiene nada de exageración.
El 18 de octubre de 1928 un aviso en el diario Crítica anunciaba: “Mañana debuta el indio Curuguá Curiguagüigua en Las Aventuras de Don Gil Con-tento”. Al darle la bienvenida, Don Gil lo llama Patoruzú: “Te bautizo con ese nombre porque el tuyo me descoyunta las mandíbulas”.
Dante Quinterno descoyuntaba mandíbulas por su talento. En 1924 (con 15 años) ya era ayudante del mítico caricaturista Diógenes Taborda. En 1927 publica diariamente la tira de Don Gil Contento, la cuna del personaje que lo consagró: el cacique tehuelche, dueño de media Patagonia y de una fortuna incalculable; un héroe de fuerza extraordinaria que no duda en entrar en acción cuando detecta una injusticia. Un personaje sin dobleces, sin debilidades que lo distraigan de su cometido justiciero.
A los dos días del debut del tehuelche, Quinterno deja el diario Crítica. Volverá en diciembre de ese año en el diario La Razón, en la tira Julián de Monte Pío, que en 1931 pasa a llamarse Patoruzú. En diciembre 1935 pasa al diario El Mundo, que, con su llegada, sumó casi 30.000 lectores.
El éxito era tal que Quinterno decide crear Editorial Universo en 1936. La revista Patoruzú, agotó los 100.000 ejemplares del debut en pocas horas. Durante 3 décadas vendió un promedio de 300.000 revistas por semana.

Semejante éxito hizo que en los años 40, Patoruzú llegara a las páginas del diario neoyorquino PM.
Una fantástica galería de personajes rodean a Patoruzú: Isidoro (que también tendrá revista propia), Upa, Patora, Pampero, el coronel Cañones, Ñancul y una larga lista de villanos entre los que se destaca Mandinga (el mis-tmísimo diablo). Y el exitoso flasback a la infancia de los dos personajes más conocidos: Patotuzito e Isidorito que también tendrán sus propias revistas.
La editorial llegó a contar en sus filas con un verdadero ejército de grandes dibujantes: Breccia, Blotta, Ferro, Raúl y Guillermo Roux, Lovato, Garaycochea, Montag y Caloi, entre otros. Todos trabajaban bajo la estricta y (muy) obsesiva supervición de Quinterno, que no duda en ordenar rehacer todo un dibujo de su personaje por un detalle mínimo.
En 1942 produjo Upa en apuros, el primer dibujo animado en colores del país. Walt Disney quedó tan maravillado con el corto que tentó a Quinterno, sin éxito, para que trabajara con él.
Reservado, cultor del más bajo perfil, la vida de Quinterno es casi un misterio. La última entrevista la dio en 1931. Murió el 14 de mayo de 2003. Pero aún hoy se editan sus revistas con las aventuras y correrías de sus inolvidables personajes. Tiene más de 80 años, pero Patoruzú no parece querer jubilarse.

Cuentan que un niño francés vivió en Argentina en los años de mayor éxito de Patoruzú. Ya adulto, recordará a este personaje a la hora de dar vida a su máxima creación: Astérix. El niño, claro, se llamaba René Goscinny.

Goles son amores, dicen. Y ni hablar de aquellos que fueron los primeros en ser marcados con algo que los hace especialmente inolvidables. Dos Argentinos fueron creadores de jugadas tan especiales, que aún hoy se dan muy de vez en cuando.
En 1924 Uruguay fue medalla de oro en los Juegos Olímpicos de París. Ganarle a aquel pode-roso equipo charrúa era más que tentador. Y se pactaron 2 amistosos con la selección ar-gentina. El primero, en Mon-tevideo, y fue 1 a 1. Para la revancha en Buenos Aires, en cancha de Sportivo Barracas, la expectativa era tal que había 60.000 personas en un estadio para 30.000. Más que la línea de cal, lo que delimitaba el campo de juego eran los espectadores.
El árbitro suspendió el partido que se reprogramó para el 24 de octubre de ése año. Ahora sí: sólo había 30.000 personas. 30.000 testigos de un hecho histórico. Cesáreo Onsari, delantero de Huracán, ejecutó un córner y la pelota fue directamente desde su pie derecho al interior del arco. Justo ese año la FIFA había modificado el reglamento: el córner dejaba de ser un tiro in-directo. Onzari hizo el primer gol olímpico, que, precisamente, se pasó a llamar de esa manera por habérselo convertido al campeón olímpico. Argentina ganó 2 a 1.

El 19 de septiembre de 1948, su Estudiantes de la Plata enfrentaba como local a Rosario Central. Un violento remate de “El Loco” Gagliardo se estrelló en un palo y la pelota salió despedida hacia donde estaba Infante. Un pique hizo que la pelota no le quede cómoda a su derecha goleadora. Había que resolver rápido. Y “el Beto” Infante sacó un conejo de la galera: para patear cruzó su pierna derecha por detrás de la izquierda. Gol. Golazo, mejor dicho: se clavó en un ángulo. Y desde 35 metros, nada menos. Debió valer doble. Estudiantes ganó 3 a 0. La revista El Gráfi-co caricaturizó a Infante como un alumno y tituló: El Infante que se hizo la rabona (faltar al colegio). Rabona. La creación de Infante ya tenía nombre.
EDITORIAL >>> I still recall the time I was in Gaby’s room, listening to him talk about the project he and Damián intended to set up: a travel magazine featuring travel stories in Argentina. They wanted to know my opinion and how the whole thing could be put together. It sounded cool: travelling, meeting people, maybe earning some money. I joined them in the brainstorming session aimed at finding a name, until we came up with “054”. There was a silence. A few hours later, Gaby called me, saying “I love the name, will you join us?”It was early 2002, and the “054” seed had been sown. /// Soon afterwards, we recruited some volunteers. Matías helped with the earliest draft (see image), and stuck around for a while working on the graphic concept. Then Laura joined as photographer, Sergio as translator, Rael as cartoonist, later to become the chief designer and one of the cornerstones of the magazine up until today, and several other friends also helped. /// We wrote a few stories, put some of our own pictures, friends’ pictures, pictures taken from the Internet, even specially produced pictures, and a few days later we were at the press. /// Thus it was how on July 27, 2002, we received in excitement the first issue of 054. A son. We were proud. /// Things developed magically. People liked the concept and the sponsors began to trickle in. But as the project grew, the effort required and the needs increased too. Some dropped out along the way, and some others joined, like Darío. His entrance gave the magazine a new drive, new energy. It made us think that we could do something big out of 054. /// So here we are, 10 years later, keeping the same spirit as usual, having travelled thousands of miles around this incredible country. /// We really enjoy what we do. And we really enjoy the fact that more and more people follow us every time.There are lots of ideas in our minds, and new challenges ahead. /// Thanks to all those who have been a part of 054. MENDOZA (MALRGÜE, LAS LEÑAS AND MORE) >>> Arriving in Malargüe was stunning. Within a few hours we had gone from routine to a wonderful place. The excitement of being there made us spring up into travel mode. /// 7 a.m. After having breakfast, we quickly jumped onto the van towards our first adventure, nothing less than the Las Leñas ski resort. /// It was insane! It was all white around us, you couldn’t see a thing without a pair of sunglasses on. We had a choice between skiing or snowboarding. Darío didn’t think it twice and went for the latter. The slopes were really steep, but there were 6-year-old kids sliding down like fish in water, while we were still struggling to strap onto our gear. Even so, we didn’t think it twice and jumped onto the first chairlift we found. The falls began in the exact moment we jumped off the chairlift. Thankfully, there was this guy who gave us a few basic tips and down we went. /// The feeling of freedom and adrenalin (when you’re mounted on the board) is highly recommendable, and the scenic mountains around you make up a fantastic background. The bumps are worth the pain, as they’re the best way to learn. After the first slide, we were all in. We took a break and threw ourselves onto the snow to enjoy the scene, which we felt a part of. After a light meal, we climbed up two more times, and went back to Malargüe with the satisfaction of having enjoyed an incredible experience… and coming back in one piece!
That evening we crashed out, but another adventure lay ahead the following morning. Now it was time to check out the Malacara volcano, a wonder of nature, where the wind and water erosion carved passages and caves almost 90 foot high. It’s fascinating to be inside the volcano, walking through the passageways, seeing and feeling how the water carved them, with patches of sky over our heads as seen from 90 foot inside the volcano. ///Finally, we hiked up one of the volcano crests, from where you get a dreamlike view of other volcanoes, the Llancanelo lake in the background and miles of steppe all around. The peace and quiet you could breathe up there was inspiring for every lover of nature and travel. /// José, our guide, was an encyclopedia. Asked about any volcano, rocky formation, bird or

other animal, he would throw at you a century of history, with specific statistics for every subject—a genius!
Back in Malargüe, we had lunch, and Johnny took us to the Laguna Llancanelo provincial Park. On the way there, he told us that, in the area, because of the desert-like climate, it rains in one year as much as it does in a single day in Buenos Aires. So you have to have terrible luck if you travel there and it rains! He said that, because of its geographic characteristics, the place is ideal for research on outer space and that, as it happens, the European Space Agency was building a base right there. /// When we got to Llancanelo, we did a little trekking. The park, some 250 square miles in area, is famous around the world as a bird-watcher’s paradise. /// From there, we saw the very mountain in which the Andes plane crash depicted in the movie “Alive” took place. /// Ah hour into the hike up the Trapal volcano, when we were beginning to feel really tired, I took a break and turned my head, to find an immense and wonderful sight of the intense light-blue lake, salt residue on the sides, the green patches of bushes scattered around, the crimson red earth and some pink flamingoes that were enjoying the sight with me. The mixture of colors was magical! It’s hard to describe so much beauty. /// On the journey back, we drank mate and had a laugh. We were deadbeat. /// But that was not all!
We arrived in the city just when the Planetarium was featuring the last show of the evening. We had heard such good comments about it that we didn’t think it twice. We caught a really entertaining short film about space. Then we went for a meal, a shower, and some sleep. We were all in! /// Next morning we woke up early, and again Johnny took us to the Castillos de Pincheira, a huge ‘castle’ sculpted by the wind and the rain into the rocky formations. As we watched the formation, it took us a while to get that it hadn’t been created by man. There we met Pedro Leguizamon, a local Mapuche who told us the history of Pincheira and what life used to be like around it. The best part was when he showed us his ruca (Mapuche for “house”), made from earth and piled-up rocks. That same afternoon we said goodbye to all our friends who welcomed us in Malargüe, and set off to Mendoza. /// Once in the city, we loved the good vibe in the air, the beautiful women, the cleanliness and the number of foreign visitors all over the place. With the spring-like weather all over us, we decided to go for some of Mendoza’s nightlife!
The following morning, still not completely rested, we set out for Potrerillos. We started off with a light trekking expedition into the hills up to the 100-foot-high Quebrada del Salto waterfall, and hiked up a little footpath for a new adventure: rappelling. The experience was amazing! At first it’s hard to relax, but once you get the hang of it it’s really enjoyable. In Darío’s second jump, I waited for him in the bottom, taking pictures but, I don’t understand how, but he took a wrong path, and after several minutes I spotted him, lost in the distance; fifty meters above the spot in which Gabriel, the instructor, was supposed to meet him. He had taken a wrong path and now the instructor had to bring him down between rocks and extremely steep, improvised paths. QUEBRACHO >>> The quebracho prayed the gods for help. Legend has it that its wood was soft, easy to carve, much sought after by the native peoples in northwestern Argentina, Bolivia and southern Brazil, who called it Paaj. The gods gave it not only its legendary hardness, but they also endowed it with flechadura, or quebracho scabies: its flowers are highly allergenic and may cause serious harm to the skin. /// But the gods didn’t stop white man. The hardness which had protected the quebracho became its Achilles heel. The word quebracho derives from the expression “quiebra hachas”, or “axe breaker”. In spite of its hardness, cutting down a quebracho was worth the effort: it provided ideal wood for making poles or railroad ties, excellent tannin for leather tanning, and superior firewood because of the scented heat it gives off when burnt. /// No god was able to protect it from forest depletion. In the first half of the 20th
century, more than 500 million quebrachos were cut down. 85% of what had been a gigantic forest was lost. On top of it all, it takes from 100 to 150 years for a quebracho to grow up to 20 meters. /// A belated Forests Law was enacted in 1948. The 1956 law declaring the Quebrado Colorado Chaqueño Argentina’s national tree values its contribution to the country’s development but fails to denounce that such contribution led to its near extinction. Even today, its depletion is ongoing. There are no gods defending the quebracho anymore.
LIGHTING THE FIRE >>> Bermudez threw away the damp twigs and piled up the others together with some paper balls on the bar-becue brazier in his backyard. The idea, he said in a serious tone, was to add some bigger pieces of wood and then arrange the charcoal without covering the fire. But then came Ferraroti, showed a glass bottle and began to put some newspaper rolls around it. He explai-ned the importance of oxygen for combustion and was about to lit up his volcano when he heard Torres’ footsteps. He was carrying a wooden fruit box, which he had conveniently emptied. He put it upside down on the brazier, placed the bag of charcoal on top and lit a match. However, Coccimano thought this would not be enough, so he pulled a bottle of alcohol off the inner pocket of his jacket and sprinkled the firewood and paper with it. Gorostiaga joined the action blowing air with a bellows, which Pérez soon replaced with an electric fan. /// Sarlanga was impatient, so he opened up the jerry can of gas he always carried with him and poured the fuel all around the grill. And, why not, all around the backyard. /// As he moved towards a safer place, Arregui found a couple of gas cylinders and rolled them into the heart of the bonfire. The explosions were promising, but did not yet guarantee that the heat would last enough. At that moment, Balaguer opened up the fuse box and with great skill caused a shortcut which sent sparkles to the curtains and mattresses fur-ther to feed the fire from several parts of the house. /// Would that be enough? Just in case, Savarese went into the house with a couple of trees he had just cut down in the street, which added to the flames, albeit not so much as Fariña, Libonatti and Palacios’s tumbling over three cars which were parked in front of the house. Their own cars. /// The fire squad chipped in with the fire truck in which they had just arrived: its fuel tank blew up with an explosion heard from several miles. Bermudez watched the scene and raised the thumb in his left hand, the one which had not carbonized, expressing approval. He was announcing that the fire was fit to start with the barbecue. /// But at that moment, a deafening noise made everyone look up and see the exact moment when an immense burning ball of fire, which nobody had time to call a “meteor”, crashed into the planet, sending off a wave of gas and fire which swept away all forms of life. /// Later, when that sphere once known as the Earth conveniently went reddish, some indescribable being, whose existence is arguable, laid a kind of horizontal ribbed surface on it and placed some pure pork chorizos. The heat was perfect. But the best part was that there was nobody else who could comment over his shoulder
PATORUZÚ >>> With more than 80 years on the scene, to say that Patoruzú is the most popular Argentine cartoon character is no exaggeration. /// On October 18, 1928, the newspaper Crítica announced: “The Indian Curuguá Curiguagüigua will make its debut ap-pearance tomorrow in the Adventures of Don Gil Contento”. On welcoming the Indian, Don Gil named him Patoruzú: “I’m giving you that name, because yours makes my jaws drop.” /// Dante Quinterno’s talent was certainly jaw-dropping. By 1924 (at age 15), he was assistant to legendary cartoonist Diógenes Taborda. Patoruzú is surrounded by a fantastic cast: Isidoro (who had its own spin-off cartoon), Upa, Patora, Pampero, colonel Cañones, Ñancul and a long list of villains, including Mandinga (the devil himself ). And there were also the hugely popular flashbacks to the childhoods of the best-known characters: Patoruzito and Isidorito, which became spin-offs themselves. /// Quinterno’s publishing house eventually featured an army of great artists: Breccia, Blotta, Ferro, Raúl and Guillermo Roux, Lovato, Garaycochea, Montag and Caloi, among others. They all worked under Quinterno’s strict and (highly) obsessive supervision, who did not hesitate to tell an artist to redo an entire draw-ing because of a tiny detail. /// In 1942 he produced Upa en apuros (“Upa gets in trouble”), Argentina’s first colored animation short film. Walt Disney liked it so much that he unsuccessfully tried to lure Quinterno to work for him. /// Reserved and extremely low-key, Quin-terno’s life is almost a mystery. He gave his last interview in 1931. He died on May 14, 2003. But his comic magazines are still published today, featuring the adventures of his staple characters. At 80+, Patoruzú does not seem to be seeking retirement.- (1) To put this huge figure in perspective, take into account that Clarin, the best-selling daily newspaper in Argentina, sells an average of 270,000 copies every day, and the best-selling magazine, Pronto, just over 100,000 copies per week. /// - Astérix box: A French kid lived in Argentina during Patoruzú’s golden age. INCREDIBLE PLAYS. THE OLYMPIC GOAL AND THE “RABONA” >>> A goal touches your heart, they say. Especially if it is the first to have some feature which makes it particularly unforgettable. Two Argentines were the creators of such special moves which remain a rare sight even today. /// CORNER KICK GOAL. In 1924, Uruguay won a golden medal in the Paris Olympic Games. Beating this powerful South-American team was highly tempting. Two friendly matches with the Argentine team were set up. The first was played in Mon-tevideo, with a final score of 1-1. The rematch in Buenos Aires, played at the Sportivo Barracas stadium, attracted 60,000 viewers into a stadium with a capacity for 30,000. The pitch boundaries were marked by the people rather than the white lines. The referee suspended the match and it was rescheduled for October 24. That time only 30,000 were allowed into the stadium. 30,000 witnesses of an historical event. Cesáreo Onsari, a forward who played for Huracán, bent a corner kick straight into the back of the net. That same year, FIFA had changed the rules, making a corner kick a direct kick. Onzari scored the first corner kick goal, which became known as an olympic goal because it had been scored by the olympic champion. Argentina won 2-1. /// CROSSING LEGS. Ricardo Infante is one of the 10 top scorers in the history of Argentine football. They say all of his goals were true works of art. On September 19, 1948, his team, Estudiantes de La Plata, faced Rosario Central as home team. A violent shot by “El Loco” Gagliardo hit a post, and the ball bounced back towards Infante. The ball bounced on the floor and ended up in an uncomfortable position for his goal-making right leg. He had to make a fast move. Infante, “El Beto”, as he was nicknamed, pulled an ace up his sleeve: in order to shoot, he crossed his right leg around the back of his left leg. Goal. A magnificent goal: right into the corner of the net, from a distance of 38 yards. It should have been counted as a double score. Estudiantes won 3 to nil. The magazine El Gráfico cartooned Infante as a schoolboy, with the phrase “El Infante que hizo la rabona”, mak-ing a pun on Infante, which means an infant, or child, and the slang expression “hacer la rabona”, which means “to play truant”. Infante’s creation was thus named la rabona.
HASTA QUE LAS VELAS NO ARDAN >>> (literally, until the candles no longer burn), is a local expression used to suggest that a party will go on all night long. /// This phrase dates back from a time when there was no electricity and a clock was an expensive item very few people owned. In brothels (or anywhere women were sexually exploited), the client was given a candle cut in a size proportional to the rate paid. Thus, when the candle burnt out, it meant that his time was out. /// Later, the expression, which originated from a very concrete time measurement, was used to refer to a party, a meeting or a job which is to last for an indefinite period of time and is foreseen to go on regardless of whether there is any actual candle burning.
