Joystick Controls. Standard excavator-style joysticks provide smoothmodulation and are ergonomicallydesigned for low effort control andoperator comfort. As a result of thiscontrol design, legroom is increasedand the rearward viewing area is greater.

Standard Pattern Changer Valve.The hydraulic excavator control patternis standard and switching betweenbackhoe and excavator control patternswith the standard pattern changer valveis as easy as loosening and moving abolt on the side of the machine.

Pilot Operated Stabilizer Controls.These provide low effort and finemodulation control. The stabilizercontrols are within easy reach of theoperator when operating the backhoe.

Pilot Operated Joystick ControlsLow effort, comfortable controls reduce fatigue, increase the viewing area and givethe operator more legroom.

Loader Linkage. The standard single-tiltloader features increased lift and breakoutforces. The optional integrated toolcarrierloader provides even higher forces, aswell as parallel lift for efficient loadingand material handling. A return-to-digsystem makes operation easy andimproves cycle times.

420D IT with Standard Quick Coupler

Quick Coupler. Provides versatility andallows quick connection to selectedwork tools for the Cat family of integratedtoolcarriers. Most work tools can bechanged in less than 30 seconds, fromthe comfort of the operator station.

Disconnects. Flat face hydraulic hosequick disconnect fittings with a connect-under-pressure feature improve theconnection of hydraulic work tools.

IT Loader Controls. The 420D IT has anew, standard single lever, pilot-operatedloader control for proportional controland fine modulation of the hydraulicwork tools. A thumb roller control ontop operates auxiliary hydraulic functionssuch as the clam bucket and two buttonscontrol hydraulic broom angle.

Reverse Signal System. Pump controlchanges improve power managementbetween the loader hydraulic systemand machine rimpull for faster truckloading. The reverse signal systemprovides priority to backhoe hydraulicsto maximize hydraulic horsepower.

Loader PerformanceSingle-tilt or integrated toolcarrier loaders offer solid performance and maximum versatility.

High Rotation Backhoe Linkage.Single pin bucket linkage contributes tobest-in-class rotation of 205 degrees forall applications, eliminating the need tochange pin position when moving fromloading trucks to vertical wall trenching.

Backhoe Boom. The excavator-styleboom features box section fabricationwith internal stiffeners for better balanceand weight distribution. The curveddesign provides additional clearanceover obstacles while digging a trench ortruck loading. The narrow boom enhancesthe viewing area to the bucket and trenchthroughout the entire operating range.

Extendible Stick. This optional backhoeattachment replaces the standard stickand increases reach and dig depth byapproximately 1.2 meters (4 feet).The extendible stick uses eight self-lubricated, non-metallic wear padswhich can be shimmed or replaced.Durable wear pad materials increasewear life in all conditions.

New Cat Cushion Swing System.The new, standard Cat Cushion SwingSystem smooths the backhoe swingfunction when returning to the trench.

New Backhoe Swing Casting.Improved with replaceable bushingsfor durability and serviceability.

Bucket Line. Cat’s expansive bucketline includes rock and coral bucketdesigns. All D-Series buckets arepainted black and carry the Cat logo.

Standard Duty Bucket. Used in easy-to-penetrate, low-impact, moderatelyabrasive materials.

Heavy Duty Bucket. Used for a widevariety of soil conditions such as semi-rocky soil and hard bank material.

High Capacity Bucket. Same durableconstruction as the Heavy Duty bucketfor tough materials but longer tip radiusprovides increased bucket capacity.

Heavy Duty Rock Bucket. Specificallydesigned to address harsh, rockyconditions and capable of diggingin granite, caliche and rocky soil.

Bucket Characteristics. The side profilehas a scalloped edge, similar to anexcavator bucket, for exceptionalfill factor characteristics and secureclamping ability.

New DRS 230 (Diagonal RetentionSystem). New DRS 230 with wideadapters provides maximum strengthand improved wear characteristics.Heavy-duty bucket teeth are attachedwith diagonal pins rather than horizontalpins for easy exchange. The adaptersare stronger as a result of this improveddiagonal pinning and additional wearmaterial on the bucket teeth increasesdurability.

Quick Couplers. Allow for quickattachment of buckets and other worktools. The D-Series High Rotation pingrabber design and a C-Series compatiblepin grabber allow buckets to be changedwithout removing the bucket pins.Other manufacturers’ buckets can becoupled with a pin puller coupler, onefor Case and D-Series buckets or onefor John Deere and D-Series buckets.D-Series quick couplers are paintedblack for easy identification.

Lift Eye. An integral lifting eye is astandard feature of the bucket linkage.

Hydraulic System. The load-sensing,variable flow hydraulic system senseswork demand and adjusts flow andpressure to match. This allows fullhydraulic forces at any engine speedfor delicate jobs in tight areas.

Hydraulic Pump. Closed-centeredimplement valves, with pressurecompensation for reduced lever effort,signal hydraulic system requirementsto a control valve located on the pump.This valve controls the pump to deliverthe flow and pressure necessary tofulfill the implement demands.

Dual Setting Torque Limiter. The variabledisplacement pump provides betterperformance in both backhoe and loaderoperations through a dual setting torquelimiter. It automatically optimizes powerto the hydraulic system during backhoeoperations and manages the powerbalance between the loader hydrauliccircuit and the drive train during frontloader operations.

XT-3 ES Hoses. Improved bend radiusand abrasion resistance provide reliablelong life in the toughest conditions.Made of four overlapping, insulatedwire spiral wraps bonded together fordurability, XT-3 ES (Enhanced Spiral)hoses exceed SAE certification standards.The hose routing protects them fromwork damage, and hose failure downtimeis substantially reduced. XT-3 ES hosescombined with Caterpillar couplingsand O-ring face seal fittings providea leak-free system.

Clamps and Bushings. Metal clampswith rubber busings are used at hoseattachment points to eliminate metal-to-metal contact and increase wear life.

3054C DIT Diesel Engine. New 3054CDIT (Direct Injection Turbocharged)meets all U.S. EPA Tier 2/EU Stage IIemissions requirements and delivershigher horsepower, increased torquerise and reliable power with lowemissions while providing excellentfuel economy with an efficient fuelsystem and traditional Caterpillardurability.

Direct Injection Fuel System. Individualunit fuel injectors deliver efficientand accurate fuel metering, reducedemissions, reliable power, high torquerise and responsive performance. A newwater separator service indicator ensuresthe operator is reminded when serviceis necessary.

Air Cleaner. A new, dry-type, axial sealair cleaner with automatic, integrateddust ejection system provides moreefficient pre-separation. The two-stageair filter incorporates both air cleanerand precleaner functions into a singleunit mounted under the hood.

Transmission. The Caterpillar PowerShuttle transmission provides four speedsforward and reverse. Full synchromeshgears and hydraulically shifted forwardand reverse shuttle clutches allowdirection and travel speed to be changedon-the-go. A neutral start provisionprevents starting while the shuttleis engaged.

Power Train

Automatic Shift Transmission.The optional Auto-Shift transmissionautomatically matches gears with gradeand load conditions. Manual modegives full gear selection to the operatorfor operation as a Power Shifttransmission.

Kick-down Switch/TransmissionNeutralizer. Located on the loaderlever, the kick-down switch on Auto-Shift machines allows the operator todownshift through the gears to first.When this switch is depressed formore than one second, it serves as thetransmission neutralizer to maintainengine and hydraulic speed whendumping into trucks.

Transmission Neutralizer. Standardon Power Shuttle machines, the hand-operated power disconnect provideseasy, on-the-go shifting and full enginerpm for faster cycle times.

Ride Control Option. Offers a smoothride in all conditions and reduces machineloping while roading. It also providesbetter material retention during load andcarry operations while greatly increasingoperator comfort. The system engageswith the flip of a switch.

New Caterpillar Front Axles. New Catheavy-duty front axles are developedspecifically for demanding backhoeloader applications.

Rear Axles and New Brakes. Heavy-dutyrear axle with self-adjusting inboardbrakes, differential lock and final drives.New Kevlar brake discs extend servicelife, provide quieter braking anddecrease stopping distance.

Two Wheel Drive. New tapered rollerbearings improve kingpin alignmentand provide more wear resistance toextend the life of the front axle and tires.

All Wheel Drive (AWD) Option. Heavy-duty front drive axle can be engaged atany time by activating the switch onthe front console. The switch can beactivated while the machine is stoppedor moving, with or without load. AWDfeatures outboard planetary gear finaldrives and improves mobility and loaderperformance in poor traction conditions.

Brake Mode Selector. The brake modeselector switch has three positions:two wheel drive, two wheel drive withall wheel braking and all wheel drive.Center position provides two wheeldrive for better tire life while roadingand engages the front axle when brakesare applied for improved brakingperformance.

Operator Comfort. The 420D/420D IToperator station incorporates years ofcab design innovations to maximizeoperator productivity. The pilot operatedcontrols allow for more legroom and aspacious work environment.

ROPS Canopy. Includes air suspensionvinyl seat, tilt steering wheel, 12-voltpower supply, phone clip, left sidestorage space with a lockablecompartment, drink holders andfloor mats.

New ROPS Canopy Plus. Includes airsuspension vinyl seat, tilt steeringwheel, 12-volt power supply, frontwindshield and wiper/washer system,phone clip, left side storage spacewith a lockable compartment,drink holders and floor mats.

Standard Cab. Features an air suspensionfabric seat, tilt steering wheel, 12-voltpower adapter, left-side storage consolewith drink holders and a lockablecompartment, phone clip, two doorsand rear windows with opening glassand eight working lights. The cab isradio-ready.

Deluxe Cab. Includes all standardcab benefits plus a deluxe, nine-wayadjustable air suspension seat; pilotoperated stabilizer controls withindividual auto-up feature; additionalsystem monitoring including a voltmeterand service indicators for fuel waterseparator, engine air cleaner andhydraulic filters.

HVAC System. The heating, ventilationand air conditioning system maincomponents are located near the floorand improvements have been made toair circulation and increased defrostcapabilities. New air duct routingsprovide improved air flow to the operator.

Tilt Wheel. The standard tilt steeringwheel on every 420D/420D IT allowsmore room when entering and exiting thecab and allows the operator to choosethe most comfortable steering position.

Deluxe Seat

Air Suspension Seat. Utilizes an airadjustment mechanism for a greateroperating range and more comfortableride. By pressing a button, the seat can betailored to support differing body weights.Adjustable seat height accommodatesall operators. The Deluxe cab seat alsohas an adjustable back support, lumbarsupport, seat cushion extension, seatcushion tilt, as well as vertical andangle adjusting armrests.

Operator Controls. The controls of the420D/420D IT have been carefully laidout to create a user-friendly environment.Switches, boom lock and pilot operatedstabilizer controls are located in the sideconsole, within easy reach of the operator.White-faced gauges are easy to readand the low effort pilot controls reduceoperator fatigue and help boost overallproductivity.

Ride Control System. Provides a smootherride in all applications, reduces machineloping while roading and providesbetter material retention during loadand carry operations while increasingoperator comfort. A nitrogen accumulatoradded to the loader lift circuit cushionsthe system and engages with the flip ofa switch.

Rear Window. The rear window featuresa heavy-duty hinge structure and positivelatch mechanism to hold the window inthe open position.
