Besides background in industrial and footwear design, my main expertise is on instructional

illustrations, but I am also able to create expressive or artistic images (mixed media). My objective for the next years is to join my craft skills as illustrator (handrawn mainly) with my scientific knowledge on how to design effective graphic and cinematographic instructions.

Fifteen years experience as university lecturer including a short experience as teacher assistant at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication (The University of Reading, UK). I have made presentations about the graphic representation of dynamic events in USA (Philadelphia and Atlanta) and UK (Wrexham, Cambridge, Greenwich and Reading), where my audience included technical communicators, information designers and illustrators.

According to Wikipedia, Raul Santos Seixas; June 28, 1945 Salvador Northeast

Brazil – August 21, 1989, was a Brazilian rock composer, singer, songwriter and producer. He is sometimes called the “Father of Brazilian Rock” and “Maluco Beleza”. He was born in Salvador (Bahia), Brazil, and died of pancreatitis in São Paulo.

PIXINGUINHAJAZZ MADE IN BRAZIL

Acoording to Wikipedia, Alfredo da Rocha Viana, Jr., better known as Pixinguinha

(pee-sheen-GEEN-ya), (April 23, 1897 - February 7, 1973) was acomposer, arranger, flautist and saxophonist born in Rio de Janeiro.Pixinguinha is considered one of the greatest Brazilian composers of popularmusic, particularly within the genre of music known as choro. By integratingthe music of the older choro composers of the 19th century with contemporaryjazz-like harmonies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and sophisticated arrangements, heintroduced choro to a new audience and helped to popularize it as a uniquelyBrazilian genre. He was also one of the first Brazilian musicians and composersto take advantage of the new professional opportunities offered to musicians bythe new technologies of radio broadcasting and studio recording. Pixinguinhacomposed dozens of choros, including some of the most well-known works in thegenre such as "Carinhoso", "Glória", "Lamento"and "Um a Zero".

PIctogramasPICTORIAL CARDS FOR ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION

These illustrations were developed

for the project "Communis" sponsored by SENAI (Brazilian organisation that deals with industrial training). Communis is a graphic system formed by printed cards with images and text. It is targeted to industrial managers who has to deal with employees that have speech difficulties (e.g. brain damages, intellectual

deficiency, autism). In graphic terms, there is an obvious influence from Otto Neurath and Gerd Arntz work for the Isotype. However, later on these drawings had to be changed in order to fit to the in-house designer's style.

FOOTWEAR DESIGN

These are design projects that I have developed during my MA (1992, Birmingham

City University, UK) and for Brazilian north east companies (1992-1998). Initially, I was strongly influenced by technological and fashion trends related to sports shoes design (Nike, Reebok and Adidas products). The prototypes of the "Hero Collection" of safety footwear were sponsored by C&J Clark International the biggest British footwear company.

Later on, I had the opportunity to work as designer for Brazilian small companies and artisans´s community. "Brazilian North east Sandals" collection was designed to be in tune with local needs and aesthetic expressions, tight budget and very limited technological resources.

This is a small sample of my

collection of more than 300 illustrated manuals. The start point was my PhD research, which has

pagEs from my copy of “how to ski by thE frEnch mEthod: EmilE allais tEchnic” (1947).

photos and layout by piErrE bouchEr. EmilE allais was a champion frEnch downhill skiEr and rEnown instructor who tEamEd up with piErrE bouchEr to makE this dEsign classic.

a chapter on "graphic representations of motion for instructional purposes". Besides working as a source of ideas, the collection

became a topic of "show and tell" presentations at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication (The University of Reading,

United Kingdom) and Department of Design (Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil).
