CitySpirit is a range of street lighting luminaires that’s designed to provide excellent environmentally friendly lighting without compromising on architectural appearance. The eight distinctive designs are clearly linked yet allow modularity.

To ensure perfect integration with the urban architecture, the CitySpirit’s luminaire, mast and bracket have been developed as one design. The range provides an elegant and complete project solution, including wall-mounted and bollard versions.

Transparent materials have been used to lighten the daytime appearance. The inner components, pole mounts and covers are made of aluminium to ensure they are sufficiently robust.

CitySpirit incorporates several new optical concepts that address topics such as spacing, night preservation, comfort and light performance.

much as three-quarters of the world’s population will live in them. This will present greater challenges for cities in maintaining their identities, providing safer streets to drive or walk down, or simply managing their

energy usage efficiently and cost-effectively. Population growth, changing lifestyles and the global economy are changing the way people live their lives, and the kind of homes they want to occupy. And, of course, all of this at the same time as global consciousness of the need to make a lasting change in the way we consume energy.

make more considered and creative choices about their home, using LED innovation, ease-of-use technology and attractive home lighting designs to create a unique, personal ambience?

Light and lighting touches life like little else. it has the ability to energise and stimulate our hearts and minds. Like sunlight, it can make us feel vital and optimistic, creating ambience to help us express who we are and what we value. Lighting has moved beyond pure functionality: for example, we know the biological benefits of light can result in lighting solutions that keep people alert at work, reduce winter depression or simply generate a sense of mental and physical well-being in stressful environments.

Lighting has a profound role to play in some of the most important global trends of the day. Take urban environments, for example. Today, cities account for more habitation than at any time in human history, and by the middle of this century, as

if i had to describe Philips in a single sentence, i would say we are “a global company of leading businesses creating value with meaningful innovations that improve people’s health and well-being”. We strive to make best use of the opportunities for lighting, in particular, to achieve lasting change in many aspects of life and, in particular, enhance well-being.

This notion, of light and well-being, is the signature of our presence at light+building this year, showing you how we simply enhance life with light. By focusing on people and their needs, we are applying meaningful innovation to develop solutions that meet the requirements of architects, lighting designers and installers, as well as city mayors, company CEos and consumers at home. How can we improve urban living by making city streets liveable, safer and more sustainable through bright, white LED street lighting, while enabling cities to strike a distinct identity for themselves? How can we empower consumers to

a reflection of who we are and who we hope to be. in tough economic times, they have become a place to retreat – staying in has become the new going out! our homes have become places to express ourselves, to showcase our personal identities. Home lighting solutions are where we enable consumers to truly shape their personal space through form and function while at the same time enhancing their sense of comfort and security, and their emotional health and well-being in the process.Step outside, and we can start to see what the switch to LED lighting can do in our cities. As urban populations change and expand, cities are looking to lighting to help establish an identity. Buildings, monuments and open spaces are now being transformed by a vibrant wash of exciting and unique night-time colours. LED is also helping cities to address the balance of light,

Set against the backdrop of these global, societal trends are the fundamental changes taking place in the lighting industry itself, and the LED revolution in particular. LED technology is transforming the lighting industry, pervading both existing and new areas of application and changing the rules of the game by opening up new possibilities for how and where electric light can enhance the human experience.

in homes, LED lighting is creating limitless possibilities for the application of colour and nuance, even becoming an integral part of household architecture. Think about it: conventional lighting is, for the most part, either on, off or dimmed. Dynamic lighting offers colours and effects that conventional lighting cannot match, opening up tremendous opportunities for us to personalise our homes. our homes are increasingly

The technological transformation of the lighting industry presents an incredible and exciting opportunity for value creation. Philips has positioned itself centrally to make an impact at every link of the lighting value

chain: from components, controls and luminaires to complete lighting solutions, with LED at the heart of our future. Philips Lighting is comprised of a wealth of knowledge, strengths and

value propositions drawn from its own legacy and from the integration of over 30 brands, collectively positioned to provide customers from both professional and consumer lighting domains with experiences based on a unique canon of excellence.

The future has never been brighter. While there are certainly challenges to overcome, more importantly, there are discoveries to make and lives to be bettered and improved. We can do all of

not only providing brighter, more secure streets at night, but reducing light spillage. LED street lighting can also benefit the overall look and feel of a street: streets that might normally be ‘cluttered’ by masts and poles can be cleaned up by the innovative application of new luminaire solutions Philips has developed.

Philips’ presence at light+building 2010 will provide an experience of the total power of LED lighting in making cities more liveable, homes more personal and workplaces more productive. As this remarkable, versatile technology continues to grow across the entire spectrum of lighting applications, our customers are rapidly acknowledging the benefits LED solutions offer them in terms of energy savings and sustainability, as well as in decorative and general lighting terms.

Fernand Pereira“it is very important for Philips to collaborate with associations such as the PLDA and the iALD. And by that i don’t mean: ‘ just donating money’’’, says Fernand Pereira. “We prefer to use our know-how and technologies to make a contribution to the seminars, workshops and other educational events that they organise. The purpose of this is to contribute to development of the profession of lighting designer. Specially for light+building, we and the PLDA have now organised a competition for young lighting designers entitled ‘Celebration of Light’. We are challenging them to design an architectural plan for illuminating St. Peter’s Church in Frankfurt-on-Main. And the winning design will be executed and this young independent lighting designer will receive € 10,000.”

recognition of independencePhilips and the PLDA may be organising a competition together, but Pereira admits that sometimes the word competition also had another connotation. “in the past Philips has not always paid full attention to independent lighting

designers. This has now changed and we have deployed a policy in our company that underlines both our ethics in this field and recognition of the independent lighting designers. This prevents us from getting into potential conflict situations.

“ Not Las Vegas in lights, but a good balance between light and technology”

atmospheres, emotions and accentsWhereas the first lighting designers had a variety of backgrounds, such as theatre lighting, Pereira sees lighting design now as a profession in which creative and artistic ideas are given plenty of scope. “For example: whereas a church used to be illuminated ‘to death’ by ‘throwing’ a pool of

floodlighting at it, nowadays the lighting designer looks at the building’s history, its characteristic features, its surroundings - and he ensures that the building acquires added value and depth due to the lighting. He is not simply looking to achieve a ‘wow’ effect, but is able to subtly dose light and colour effects. So not Las Vegas in lights, but a good balance between light and technology.”

According to Pereira, the existence of organisations such as the PLDA shows that the profession of lighting designer has matured. “PLDA is doing a tremendous job in providing educational programmes in partnership with univer- sities such as Wismar, Hildesheim or KTH in Stockholm just to mention a few. The workshops they organise also offer

Have you noticed that every evening during the light+building trade fair St. Peter’s Church in Frankfurt-on-Main is illuminated surprisingly differently? This is due to several young, creative lighting designers. They are taking part in the ‘Celebration of Light’ Lighting Design competition that Philips is organising in conjunction with the PLDA. According to Fernand Pereira, Philips’ Senior Director Professional Lighting Solutions, the fact that Philips is collaborating with associations of independent lighting designers is a good thing. Why?

lighting designers, both experienced and in training, a chance to learn more and gain practical experience.” He says that this is also shown in the book ‘Light & Emotion’, which Philips published during the PLDC Convention in Berlin in 2009. it presents the results of a worldwide study of 47 independent lighting designers, gives a good picture of their vision of the use of light and, thanks to the innumerable examples, also constitutes a source of inspiration for other lighting designers.

light and well‑being What will the profession be like in 20 years? Pereira: “A lighting designer will soon be the biggest advocate of light and well-being. The important thing is that people feel good and at ease in their environment. No matter whether at home or at work. With the right light in the right place. And with a great deal of attention to energy saving and sustainability. Philips, together with the lighting designers’ community, is fully committed on turning this vision into reality.”

B esides our homes, our streets are

the place where you really feel what light can do. over the years, we’ve increasingly focused on the functional side of the urban landscape and ignored the emotional elements that make us feel at home in a city. The consequences are all around us: crime, vandalism, feelings of isolation and a lack of community pride. We’ve now come to realise the importance of feeling we belong in our cities. There’s a real movement to re-humanise our urban environment and lighting has proven to be a highly effective, cost-efficient and fast-track means of tackling

crime, promoting tourism, developing local business and fostering local identity and pride. originally developed for purely functional reasons, urban lighting has evolved into a far-reaching, multi-faceted entity. Light speaks to our emotions, humanising our surroundings, bringing harmony to our environment and creating a warm, inclusive sense of well-being. Good lighting brings light to the city and the city to life. it is a vital ingredient in humanising the city and improving the quality of urban life. it has the ability to create an environment that makes people feel safe and restores their pride and sense of identity as mem bers of a community.

Light is life

Even more, lighting can turn the urban environment into a spectacular event that entertains, enlivens and captivates. in short, light is life. Philips is offering you an almost infinite number of

ways to stimulate the lasting emotions that build a city’s image and make people feel at home. in our outdoor section at light+building you’ll experience what light can do for your city.

the garden lighting and the uplighting to the roof. Natural daylight is used extensively, as are low energy sources to achieve low cost of ownership.

As a professional lighting designer, how do you interact with architecture?

I trained as an architect so it’s in my blood, in the sense of being pre-occupied with the human experience of light. And, of course, architects are used to working with changing daylight in the design of their buildings.

Also, architects tend to think from the big picture, at a city scale, down to the fine detail. In lighting terms this would be from city lighting down to an individual luminaire and the effect it has.

How do you integrate light and well-being into your projects?

Our primary concern is always the contribution of light to well-being because it’s about the human experience. This goes beyond simply adding the biological and physiological needs of people to look at the wider subject, such as addressing the requirements of people with special needs..

Mark Major of Speirs and Major Associates spoke to us about the interaction of light with the health and well-being of those who experience it and its importance for lighting design

What is your most recent project with a Health and Well-being aspect?

One recent example is Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre at Charing Cross Hospital in London, which won the RIBA Stirling Prize. A key part of the brief was to create a non-institutional, almost domestic, ambience. Simplicity was also important so complex controls were avoided.

The interior uses a lot of dimmable glowing glass fixtures, complemented by direct/indirect lighting that provides task lighting and adds a glow to the floating roof. The exterior is also welcoming thanks to

Mark MajorWe also try to minimise environmental impact, so that we are looking at well-being in a holistic sense - namely the well-being of the planet.

Why is light strongly linked to health?

While accepting that the visual function is critical, lighting needs to add more and be sensitive to people’s natural responses to light. We also need to understand the effects that bad lighting can have on well-being.

In addition, the potential for pollution from the by-products of industrialised lighting systems is something that must be factored into our thinking.

How do lighting technologies help with these projects?

The increasing sophistication of lighting design places greater demands on the manufacturer to come up with innovative but robust solutions that improve well-being. I firmly believe the time has come for lighting designers, technologists and manufacturers to work in close collaboration with each other to meet the demands of tomorrow’s society.

How do you foresee the use of OLEDs in the future?

The revolution that is occurring in solid state lighting technologies, including OLEDs and LEDs’ is quite incredible. At the same time, having worked with LEDs for well over a decade, we are familiar with the technical challenges in delivering proper and lasting solutions.

OLEDs promise even greater potential than LEDs but we must be patient and allow pioneering manufacturers to deliver working systems before we promise them to clients.

What is your LED dream?

To have the same colour quality, range of focus, dimmability and simplicity of use as we previously enjoyed with incandescent lighting. If manufacturers can deliver that same flexibility through LEDs and/or OLEDs I will think the brave new world has definitely arrived.

S aving energy by constantly

developing more efficient light sources, luminaires and dimming devices is our core business. Moreover, as a company which is also active in the field of health and well-being, taking care of people and their environment is in the DNA of every single employee. More than 10 years ago, we extended our responsibility and launched the EcoVision programme, an ambitious and efficient plan, driving us to drastically reduce the environmental impact of our factories.

Now Philips Lighting is taking its responsibility to a new level by offsetting the carbon emissions linked to the manufacturing of its luminaires. We have assessed the environmental impact of the production of each luminaire, measured in kg of equivalent carbon emitted in the atmosphere (e.g. 46 kg of CO2 for 1 Mini-Iridium Cosmopolis). Depending on the quantity of luminaires produced, we offset this impact by purchasing carbon credits from the Climate Neutral Group, which deploys activities

Philips Lighting has great news for everyone who cares about the environment: from now on we deliver carbon neutral luminaires for road lighting, helping our customers to meet the green challenges ahead. Philips will take responsibility for the offsetting of all CO2 emitted during the production of its road lighting luminaires, like the SpeedStar LEDGINE and Koffer2 luminaires shown at light+building.

lower levels of absenteeism. One of the most important factors in feeling good is daylight. We all know that a break outside in the daylight can ‘recharge our batteries’. Philips helps you bring that sparkle of energy and sense of well-being indoors. Our lighting technologies complement the natural light that enters an office and can even imitate the changing pattern of natural daylight. This keeps people alert by ensuring their biorhythms stay in tune with the natural cycle of the world beyond the office walls.

Lighting doesn’t just illuminate. It has the power to define and enhance your company’s image and identity in this competitive market. Bright or subtle. Sophisticated or playful. Always responsible. Philips offers you all lighting ingredients to inspire, uplift and make a statement with a complete range of solutions that is technologically advanced, socially responsible, cost- and energy-saving, pleasing to the eye and inspiring for people. See at light+building what light can do to your office.

We all feel better and work better when our office environment respects our body clocks. And when artificial light complements daylight, it’s much easier to concentrate and stay alert. In any office, when we feel better, we work better. A healthy office environment helps keep us motivated and energised, so we can stay focused, be more productive and give our best. Studies show that we feel better working under higher quality lighting. In offices it enhances productivity, resulting in improved motivation and

B ackgroundThe Hermitage

Amsterdam, like its famous counterpart in St. Petersburg, has a special section dedi-cated to teaching children about art and culture. In this Hermitage for Children there are classes, work-shops, exhi bitions and other activities to stimulate development and nurture talent.

the challengeIn 2009 the Hermitage Amsterdam relocated to a stylish 17th-century building on the banks of the river Amstel. Renovation work included a new lighting plan for the rooms where children’s workshops take place, which have large windows on both sides.

The lighting solution had to brighten the middle of the room, cater for different occasions and conditions, while also matching the wooden ceilings it was integrated into.

the solution“In the summer a lot of light streams in from outside, whereas in the winter it can be pretty dark even during the day,” says Hans Wolff of Hans Wolff & Partners Lighting Designers, who were responsible for the lighting throughout the building. “We incorporated two different MASTER TL5 fluorescent tubes in each luminaire, one which produced a warmer light with a colour temperature of 2,700K and the other

DYNAMIC LIGhtING IS thE kEY At thE hErMItAGE for ChILDrEN

giving off more bluish light at 6,500K. The intensity of both can be altered to suit the ambient lighting levels, and also for specific occasions like video presentations. The appearance of the lighting was also important. “Standard louvred fittings for fluorescent lamps are often uninspiring,” says Wolff. “We wanted something more appealing that would match the workshop room interiors, so we chose Philips Savio luminaires. Instead of louvres at the bottom they have a plastic surface that diffuses the light very evenly.”

benefitsThe Savio luminaires fit in beautifully with the surroundings, while the dynamic lighting solution

inside offers the ideal balance between functional light and ambience creation. Children can work and learn in a well-lit environment which is also pleasant and contributes to their - and their teachers’ - general feeling of well-being. The lamps themselves offer several other advantages. “Fluorescent are still the most energy-efficient option available,” says Wolff. “They are also cheap to replace and easy to maintain.” Ease- of-use was also another key criterion. Adjusting the lighting levels and colour is carried out using a Philips remote control. Staff can do this with no problem; no training or specific lighting knowledge is required.

Franco & Fortes Lighting Design

“ These days everyone is trying to work with sustainable sources, efficient, low-energy lighting solutions and considering the recycling possibilities”

“After graduating in Architecture in 1986,” says Carlos Fortes of Franco & Fortes Lighting Design, São Paulo, “I moved here to work in lighting design with Esther Stiller and Gilberto Franco. Esther went on to open Brazil’s first office specifically for lighting design, and Gilberto and I set up a partnership. I am very much self-taught and have learned a lot from other designers, from travelling, from exhibitions and seminars, etc. We work with four qualified architects, focusing on architecture and urbanism, although we also do scenic, theatre and event lighting. We don’t specialise, so our projects vary in scope and nature, from apartments and retail outlets to airports, hotels and parks.”

Why did you choose to work in lighting design?

“I originally wanted to work in movies, but when I started working for Esther Stiller and Gilberto Franco something just clicked, I felt inspired and wanted to explore this field further. Lighting design enables you to promote a sense of well-being, to create a specific ambience, although people are not always aware of this. You may not be able to determine what people feel, but you can enhance their mood, and that’s very rewarding.”

How do you like to use light?

“We like to design artistic lighting for exhibitions, for example, where a more intuitive, emotional approach is required. When we were asked to light the ‘Luzombra’ (‘luz’ = light, ‘sombra’ = shadow) lamp showroom to demonstrate the kind of feelings, effects and atmo-spheres you can create with light, it was immediately clear to us that we would do this in an almost scenographic way using ambiguity, that paradoxical thing of light and shadow, full and empty, concave and convex, light and colours.”

Do trends vary from one country to another?

“The way you project and see light is determined by the kind of climate you live in. Here in South America, where the weather is sunny and the sky is blue for most of the year, our experience of natural light and light at night is different from that of people in Scandinavia, for example, where they have very few sunny days and months without any sunlight. Their experience of the environment is bound to be different from ours, and this will be reflected in their understanding of architecture and their approach to lighting design.”

What inspires you now?

“There are so many different things that inspire me – an art exhibition, cinema… The photography in a movie sometimes makes me want to see certain effects, to use light in certain ways.”

Waiting roomsP otential for more

In many cases, the waiting room could offer patients and visitors a much more pleasant experience than it currently does. As well as the standard basic facilities – chairs, books and magazines – there could, for instance, be a visitor’s desk where you can borrow radio headphones, portable audio players, audio books and hand-held video games. There could also be an area with individual TVs and headphones to entertain you without disturbing others, and tables where you can play cards or even plug in a laptop.

Designed to relaxLighting solutions for a waiting room should be designed around the people – children or adults – who are going to experience them. A home-like lighting ambience has a settling effect on patients as they wait. General lighting combined with dimmable wall lighting and flexible free-standing or table luminaires will radiate a relaxing, ‘domestic’ ambience. Such a positive ambience can be achieved by using more indirect than direct lighting, in warm white light, with different lighting systems for different parts of the waiting

area and not-too-dramatic accent lighting. colour accents from LED elements can be used to create distraction and promote social interaction, while daylight-following dynamic lighting will foster a stronger sense of well-being and connection to the outside world.

Light, clean spacesThere’s no better place to start with ambient lighting than the waiting room. It sets the tone for the entire hospital. In the waiting area of an out-patient department, where people may be tense, anxious or in pain, a soft homely atmosphere has a welcoming, calming effect, while the impression of hygiene and cleanness fosters a sense of trust.

P ositive reassurance with AmbiScene

Going to the hospital is not something people usually look forward to - it’s a time when they feel concerned and vulnerable. Coloured lighting during examination and diagnosis can help people to feel more at ease and create distraction. Patients or staff can select a ‘colour’

for the room, then see the transformation of the environment in front of them, making them partners in the procedure. Functional lighting above but outside the main axis of the scan table can be switched on to prevent glare for the patient and to facilitate preparatory activities. All settings can be managed from the control room.

Ambient Experience Design can be used to create an even more reassuring environment, improving the way patients feel during a variety of processes, including scanning procedures. Philips has focused on four key experiences that can be impacted by the clinical environment. Patients may feel anxious and intimidated,

over what’s happening. Lastly, hospital procedures can be time-consuming, and staffing shortages can contribute to long waiting times, resulting in stress for staff and patients alike. Ambient Experience is a Philips Healthcare solution to create people-centric environments in healthcare

unsure of what will happen next as they wrestle with concerns about their medical condition. They may not have visual contact with clinical staff during some procedures; at the same time, they are separated from their loved ones, resulting in feelings of isolation. Also, an individual may feel like “just a number” with no control

facilities. It is based on research into the values and needs of patients and medical staff, and integrates architec- tural elements, interior design and technologies such as lighting, video projection and sound. The result is a holistic, multi-sensorial experience that helps patients to remain calm during the procedure, staff to perform more

efficiently, and institutions to differentiate themselves with a healthcare environment that truly puts people first.

“My vision of light is that it is not a continuity of daylight”,says Francois Migeon, partner in the French-based design group Grandeur Nature and 8’18’’. “Nocturnal light should give a building a different aspect than the one it has during the day. I am given an architectural backdrop on which I am free to use light. I have the freedom to disagree, to hold a prejudice against the medium I have been given. It is a hand-to-hand fight with the building. I work a great deal with colour and the way I use it is, I believe, rather exclusive to me. I work very little with primary colours; I prefer secondary colour, shaded whites, colour blends, combinations of colour. Using blends gives us more freedom to give the building its own unique colour. And there is also the movement of light. I think that’s another aspect very specific to us.”

Who would want to picnic on an empty motorway?

The lighting there is high, harsh. We move towards light where we would like to settle, to talk. We see close ness. And light can create that environment. We are currently working on

a project where there are open salons in the town. Light is essential in creating the right atmosphere. Because it is light that can make you feel comfortable. And emotion is often linked to comfort.”

solutions. That means we will be dealing with different customers and it also means we will have to adopt a different marketing strategy. We have to understand what these new customers want and try to anticipate and respond to future needs. The focus now is on the people, and no longer on the technology. That is a massive challenge.”

Energy“We want to showcase our solutions in an effective way. We want our customers to feel what light can do. Light is something you have to experience.” Of that Manon is convinced, and she is able to illustrate it brilliantly using the lighting in her office. When you first enter the office it seems a bit cool, but if you sit down for a minute you start to feel energised, you find you are able to concentrate for longer and your eyes don’t tire so quickly. “Artificial lighting should mimic natural light, because it is under natural light that people feel most comfortable. Large illuminated areas that vary in lighting intensity and colour temperature over the course of the day are most suitable for this,” Manon explains. “LED lighting can be used in large areas or strips. This gives rise to a pleasant distribution of light. LEDs can also be produced in any colour. And compared with TL lighting, they use less material; they

LEDs This energy-efficient form of lighting is not only used extensively for outdoor applications, such as in road markings, advertising and architecture, LEDs have also found their way into a host of indoor applications too.

Lighting is undergoing enormous change at present. Thanks to their miniaturisation, long lifetime, efficiency and sustainability, the arrival of LEDs has paved the way for innovative lighting concepts. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode: an electronic component that lights up when a weak current is passed through it. LEDs can be combined on a printed circuit board to create a light source. They are available in the most diverse range of colours and consume up to eight times less energy than ‘conventional’ lighting for the same light intensity, and this naturally translates into a lower electricity bill. In addition, LEDs are very safe because they operate on low voltage and they have an exceptionally long lifetime. These are all good reasons to change over to LED lighting − and that is precisely what people are doing more and more.

New applications for LEDs are being developed continuously: signposting on roads, in public spaces or industrial projects,

LED applications for events, music and theatre spectacles and LED lighting in cafés, restaurants, retail spaces and shop windows. Artists, designers and architects have also been exploring the possibilities offered by LEDs. LED techno- logy has found its way into all sectors and the range of applications is set to increase still further in years to come.

Revolution“LED lighting represents the biggest revolution in the history of lighting technology since Heinrich Gobel, who invented the incandescent lamp” points out Manon Janssen, CMO Philips Lighting. “The changes taking place now are historic. A development on this scale only happens once in a hundred years. The last time there was anything like this was when they changed over from the candle to the incandescent lamp. Now we are changing from analogue to digital lighting. You could compare it to the arrival of the Internet. What the Internet has done for mail, that is what LED lighting is doing for us. We are getting access to a whole range of new opportunities. It is expanding our horizons. And that is going to have huge consequences, also for the way we approach the market. We are going to change over from selling lamps to supplying systems, from supplying components to developing

are energy efficient and safe. When you take everything into account, there is only one conclusion you can come to: LED lighting is the business lighting of the future.”

ColourAlthough in the interiors of private homes the level of brightness is not as important, LED lighting has so many other advantages that it is also seen as the light of the future for residential applications as well. The diameter of the strips is so small that they can literally be used anywhere. They have such a long lifetime that they can be used in the most hard-to-reach places because the long lifetime means that replacement is not going to be an issue. “What’s more, the low wattage makes them ideally suited for use in ceilings, floors and walls. They can be used very effectively in the place of projectors or for light lines, for example in bookshelves or wardrobes. They can also be used behind curtains to create atmospheric lighting or as work lighting in the kitchen. These days LEDs are available with dimmers so users can not only adjust the intensity and ‘warmth’ of the LED lighting, they can also change the colour of it too. That really means you can use it to create atmosphere. You don’t even need to paint the walls any more,” laughs Manon. “You can light them in a different colour every day.”

investing in R&D to ensure continuous breakthroughs and ever-increasing product performance, in energy efficiency, colour quality and reliability. This focus on core LED technology enables Philips to offer a wide range of state-of-the-art, advanced LED solutions, from bare LEDs, LED drivers and LED engines to LED luminaires, resulting in many high-

P hilips fortimo LED technologies.

At the heart of all Philips LED solutions that are brought to the market for white lighting lies the LED technology inside. LED technology is highly dynamic, forever evolving and challenges many of the established laws and technical methods used for conventional light sources. Philips is continuously

quality, highly-efficient LED solutions available for use in professional installations in offices, shops, public buildings and for outdoor lighting solutions.

what is the best LED technology?Due to the experience of years of R&D activity, Philips recognises that there is not one simple answer to this

Remote phosphor is therefore the chosen technology in the Philips Fortimo LED engines, specifically made for diffuse, general downlighting, such as the Fortimo LED DLM, the Fortimo LED Twistable and the Fortimo LED LLM, to create a combination of the highest energy efficiency and colour quality.

question. It depends very much on what the application requirements are. Size, dimensions, colour quality, beam angles and energy efficiency all play a role here.

There are different ways of achieving high LED performance. A particular LED technology that might be highly suitable for achieving high energy

Philips Fortimo LED technologies

efficiency in a diffuse LED light engine may not be the best solution for achieving high colour rendering in a more directional, spot type of LED light engine. The Philips strategy is always to choose the best possible LED technology for a product, based on its application and knowledge of LED technology options available at that time.

Technology // Philips Feel // 8786 // Philips Feel // Technology

Page 45: Revista Philips TOTAL MAG

Remote phosphorThe Philips LED technology currently chosen as the best solution for reaching high energy efficiency in Fortimo diffuse LED light engines is called remote phosphor.• Remote phosphor technology involves placing a special

phosphor film layer at a short distance from a printed circuit board with blue LEDs on it, instead of directly on the LEDs themselves. The blue LEDs are then housed in a highly reflective mixing chamber, which reduces light extraction losses, resulting in a highly efficient system. The blue LED light is converted to white light in conjunction with the yellow remote phosphor plate at the exit aperture of the mixing chamber.

• By placing the phosphor layer remote from the LEDs and using a mixing chamber, Philips has succeeded in improving the energy efficiency of a typical LED downlight engine by up to 40%.

Philips Fortimo LED DLM systemHighly efficient LED engines and drivers for building in to luminaires for general lighting.

• Remote phosphor technology also improves colour homogeneity and colour consistency within and between different light engines. This means there is no discernible colour shift. It also provides a stable, smooth, diffuse white light with a good colour rendering.

• Remote phosphor technology makes it easy to develop virtually any colour temperature, colour rendering or special spectrum required.

• Each Fortimo LED engine has a unique, specific remote phosphor recipe, which is designed to provide optimum light in combination with the selection of LEDs, lumen package, colour temperature and colour rendition specification required. When efficacy upgrades are implemented, the remote phosphor specification is also modified accordingly.

Philips Fortimo LED LLMEnergy efficient, high quality LED engines for building in to urban and residential outdoor luminaires to feel safe and comfortable

Philips Fortimo LED Twistable – the replaceable downlight engine with integrated electronic driver inside and separate lampholderThe Fortimo LED Twistable is a new entry to the market. It is designed for use in downlights, as a replacement for halogen or compact fluorescent downlights. Its small size and built-in electronic driver allows a luminaire manufacturer to design small LED downlights, with high lumen packages, good efficacy and colour rendering.

Philips Fortimo LED Spot – quality of light, zero maintenanceThe benefits of LED technology in retail applications are well known. LEDs consume less energy, they last longer, and have minimised UV and IR emissions. However, uncertainty about their reliability and quality of light, meaning colour rendering and colour consistency has kept halogen as the preferred choice. But all that is about to change. That’s because we are introducing a new LED engine with enhanced reliability excellent colour rendering and very tight colour consistency

In 2008 Philips Lighting introduced a new LED engines concept to the market, aimed specifically at Luminaire manufacturers wanting to build LED versions of existing luminaire types.• Fortimo LED systems,

• Lexel LED systems, designed for colour changing applications.

The Fortimo and Lexel LED engines and drivers are now widely used, as light

Philips Fortimo and Lexel LED engines concept

The only aspect that changes is that the LED engines become more efficient and the wattage is reduced. This means that luminaire manufacturers can build their luminaires with a LED system inside that is always up to date with the latest technology, yet is also constant in form factor.

future proofed systemsWhen designing the fundamental elements of the new Philips LED engine concept, it became clear that there was a real need for a future proofed system, whereby a certain continuity of specification should be guaranteed in the ever changing world of LEDs.The rate at which new LED bins, with improved specifications, are released

is a phenomenon previously unknown in the Lighting industry and is extremely disruptive for the manufacturing and specification of a luminaire. The Philips Fortimo and Lexel portfolio of LED engines and drivers were therefore designed in such a way that whenever a new improved LED bin became available, it could be incorporated inside the LED engine, without changing the size, dimensions, shape, lumen output or light quality of the system.

engine and driver, designed in total harmony with each other. The Fortimo and Lexel drivers have been designed with intelligence inside that recognises the characteristics of the engine, in terms of lumen output, type and version. This ‘one type fits all’ approach means that it is possible to use the same driver in combination with an 1,100Lm, 2,000Lm or 3,000Lm Fortimo LED DLM engine, as well as with the Fortimo LED SLM 1,100Lm or 2,000Lm version. This simplifies the process

for making new luminaires substantially. The drivers are also designed in such a way that they can be used with future higher lumen LED engines still being developed.

There is now a wide range of Fortimo LED engines and drivers available for incorporation in luminaires, ranging from high lumen downlight systems, spot systems and linear systems to a new replaceable downlight version. For more information, please see www.philips.com/fortimo

However, until recently, LED systems were only suitable for narrow streets, and this limited the number of opportunities to use LED street lighting. But all that changed with the introduction of Fortimo – a genuine breakthrough in LED street lighting. Because with Fortimo, LED lighting can now provide clear white and uniform illumination without glare, for residential

streets up to 10 metres wide. What’s more, the additional investment is paid back within the lamp lifetime. This means that now 50% of all street lighting in the Netherlands can be replaced with this LED lighting.

“As the front runner in ‘green lighting’, Eindhoven municipality wanted to support the Fortimo innova- tion and see for itself if Philips could keep its promise,” says Arthur Noordhoek, manager/ coordinator of public lighting for the municipality. “Our pilot project with Fortimo showed that the gain certainly makes good economic sense. And a lot more too.”

the solutionA typical residential road in Eindhoven, the Ministerlaan, was chosen for the pilot. Five streetlights were replaced, each fitted with a Fortimo LED engine. This may not seem much, but according to Noordhoek it was

enough: “We first wanted the residents to see the difference for themselves. The existing high-pressure sodium lamps bathe the area in an orange light, and you can only recognize a person from six metres away. Fortimo produces comfortable white light with perfect colour rendering without any glare. Which is not only more aesthetically pleasing, you can recognize people from eight metres away! And because this white light is much more natural it makes people feel safer and more at ease in their surroundings.”

benefitsWith its comfortable warm-white 30 W light source, Fortimo appears to produce just as much light as a 50 W high-pressure sodium lamp, although the 50 W lamp actually produces more. Noordhoek: “When used in combination with a ballast, the old lamp consumes 70 W. This means that Fortimo

gives us an energy saving of 57%. On top of that, there are major savings on lamp replacement costs, because with a lifetime of 50,000 burning hours Fortimo lasts three times longer than its predecessor.”

The new future-proof Fortimo engines are also easily integrated into existing or new outdoor luminaires and represent a true ‘ready-to-use’ LED solution. This is partly due to the patented revolutionary LED remote phosphor technology, which delivers energy-efficient high-quality comfortable white light, with constant output over the long lifetime of the engine. If advantages in bare LED efficacies are made, these will be incorporated into the Fortimo engine without changing the dimensions, shape or lumen output, this enables luminaire manufactures to plan ahead for the coming years.

departments ranging in size from 2,000 to 10,000 square metres, Coin is one of Italy’s leading department stores. Coin’s mission is ‘to give customers the best shopping experience in town in an open, multi-experience setting’. And it shows: Coin welcomes more than 30 million visitors each year. Encouraged by its nationwide success at home, Coin has gone on to set up franchise stores in other countries. In 2009, the first fully owned Coin store was opened in the historic centre of Budapest.

the challengeElena Sandre, interior architect at Coin International, was closely involved in the Budapest project. “Designing this specific Coin store was a significant challenge because of the building’s monument

status. The Hungarian Fine Arts Council imposed strict conditions in terms of style and materials. The most severe limitations of all were imposed on the central Hauszmann Hall. In order to maintain its original splendour, we were not allowed to use the walls for display shelves and had to design detached furniture made entirely of glass.” The complexity of the Budapest setting also had an enormous impact on the overall lighting plan. Sandre: “We had to find the right balance between the displayed goods and the architectural context, without detracting from the Coin philosophy.”

the solutionLuminaire manufacturer Turnlights, Coin’s preferred light supplier, was asked to build the lighting plan. “We installed MASTERColour CDM lamps, Lexel DLM

systems with spot beams and several halogen spots – 1077 luminaires in total”, says Nereo Bianchi, CEO for Turnlights Italy. “We consider the light quality of MASTERColour CDM lamps to be superb and reliable. Their sparkling lumen output creates lots of possibilities in terms of optical features. For example, we designed a luminaire whereby mirrors are used to reflect CDM-TC beams onto the shelves from a hidden body.” For general lighting, Sandre chose a lightweight suspension system with various lamp types to minimise the visual impact in the hall. “To illuminate the large glass ceiling, we were given permission to place a stucco rim at a height of 5 metres. We then attached groups of luminaires to this ‘shelf ’ to illuminate both the hall and the glass ceiling via cross

projection. And in the hall we created continuously changing light effects with LEXEL LED DLM to support special events as well as natural daylight variations.”

benefits“I’m really satisfied with the way in which all the different products are perfectly lit; each area presents a pleasant and varied ambience”, says Sandre. “What is more, all the luminaires with modern designs especially those in the Hauszmann Hall, are perfectly integrated into the original architectural context.” Bianchi: “One of the main benefits is the homogeneous light quality achieved with the extensive use of MASTERColour CDM lamps. The luminaires create excellent light-shadow effects, which make a visit to this Coin store a truly eye-catching experience.”

Philips invites visitors to come and experiment with the world’s first OLED-based lighting concept.

Getting creative with OLED lighting

For designers, architects and artists, the

development of OLEDs opens new doors.

Because OLEDs are so flat and light, it’s

even possible to combine them with other

materials. “With OLEDs, light can become

a very real part of design,” says Kristin

Knappstein, Business Development Manager

at Philips Lighting. “This gives designers a new

freedom to create exciting, original concepts.

Imagine furniture with a luminous sheen,

T oday, it is inevitable for cities to be alive

at night as well as during the day. People working during the day are deprived of social, artistic, sports and entertainment activities. By facilitating these activities at night, using urban spaces with safety and security, and by carefully selecting historical, artistic and architectural elements that have social value, you make cities more attractive and promote quality of life. But if you are to do this positively and with an efficient use of energy you require comprehensive planning.

A Lighting Master Plan can provide direct and indirect

advantages by bringing a new point of view and identity to the city. It can introduce basic principles with an overall approach to both utility and architectural lighting, control of night life and the night image of the city.

The development of a Lighting Master Plan will typically pass through three stages. During the research stage, a detailed analysis of the city is performed. This will include usage, users, natural characteristics, existing utility and architectural lighting, and light coming from buildings. It will also deal with the city’s image, identity, silhouette, road characteristics, the hierarchy between roads

and between buildings and elements symbolising the city. Then a lighting strategy is developed, taking into account light pollution, energy usage, sustainability and environmental factors. And third, the implementation stage should include planning and capital costs, operating costs, budget and maintenance systems.

Urban lighting gets old after about ten years, and changes to lamps and lighting elements become necessary. New products become available with continuously improving technologies and subjects such as energy efficient usage also play a role in such changes.

In this renewal process, in the renovation of old cities or in urban transformation plans, lighting master plans must be made with respect for the overall approach. The CIE guide Master Planning of Urban Lighting (D5 TC 21), which is not yet published, shows the need of undertake utility and architectural lighting objectives with overall systematic planning.

“ It’s about promoting social interaction”

“For me, architectural lighting is the perfect balance between science and art” says Martin Lupton. “What we do can very often be artistic, but it is not art. Over the last few years we have been collaborating a lot with artists and they bring a real conceptual, contextual depth to the work; we often cannot achieve such depths in commercial activities due to the timescales involved. But I strongly believe that our work must be based on a strong conceptual basis. There must be a reason for doing what we do – something that extends beyond simply creating something that looks good.”

I suppose you actually have functional lighting – where you need to be able to see so that you don’t get mugged – and there’s a different kind of lighting where you try to create some kind of emotion. “It’s about promoting social interaction. You could take a space, for example, and simply put the same amount of light all over it, floodlight

it like a football field and people would hurry through it. But you could also create areas of interest and pockets of intimacy where people can stop and sit and talk to each other. In such a situation, light does not exist by itself,

but must be supported by a strong landscape concept, a strong architectural concept.”

Can you talk about a project you have done that illustrates this?

“We were recently involved in exterior lighting for a retail urban regeneration project in the centre of Exeter : a new

block with retail spaces on the ground floor and residential space and offices above. The space is actually active, because people live there and restaurants and bars stay open longer. It’s an occupied city centre. We brought

our experience with similar projects to this one and a lot of what we did was building the lighting into the buildings and letting the light come out in a low-key soft way, and then having accentuated areas.”

So having the light coming up from the interior of the buildings and using that to light up the more public spaces.

“Yes. And this produces patterns of light, shadows and shapes, some of which are like a graphic design language. We have done that in a couple of schemes recently, using the light fittings to light the space and also using the lit feature as a graphical key. It not only accentuates the architecture, it also creates a rhythm in the space. It is not bland uniformity. Under one of the canopies in Exeter you have what we call a bar code. We used simple linear fittings but we’ve adjusted the space between them so that it appears like a bar code. It lights up the street but when you look at it, you’ve got this interesting rhythm of light fittings that doesn’t really relate to the architectural rhythm of the building but adds interest to the view and draws your eye into the space.”

A n astonishing forest of trees in the shape

of flowers has sprung up in Medellín, “the city of eternal springtime”. Visitors walk beneath elevated foliage in subdued lighting, skirting around the gigantic trunks and discovering that they are hollow and that orchids are growing inside them.

Orquideorama is a project brimming with poetry and technical genius designed by the young Plan: b arquitectura architects (in association with the jprc architects) for the botanic gardens in Medellín. For this project they planted

ten “flower-trees”, each with a metal trunk and six hexagonal petals made from interlaced beams, to form a network through modular increase and tree structure. These ten flower trees have grown side by side creating an immense canopy with a bee-hive motif snaking its way across the top of the botanical gardens. By bringing together structural biological forces, Orquideorama produces an elegant synthesis of cellular processes and sculptural shapes, a combination destined to continue to evolve and grow.

Philips challenges visitors to light+building: “Feel what light can do”. Can the effect of light really be felt?

Everyone knows that light affects mood and well-being. Just think of glorious summer days or a gloomy autumn mood. The stimulating or relaxing effect of various light colours has also been proved scientifically. With new light solutions, dynamic light whose colour can be changed can be used for specific purposes so as to create a feel-good atmosphere in various areas.

What part does LED technology play in this?

With the revolutionary developments in the LED field we have at our disposal a technology that makes completely new types of application possible. A technology that is robust, flexible in use, durable and above all energy-efficient.

Currently almost 20% of the electrical energy consumed worldwide is used for lighting. With modern solutions this figure could be halved.

Are measures such as the ban on incandescent lamps a solution?

We need to think in the longer term and evaluate products according to the costs they give rise to in the course of their entire lifetime. The 100W incandescent lamp, which is now banned, appears to be economical

when you buy it, but at € 20 a year makes its presence felt on the electric bill. While an LED lamp is more expensive to buy, it saves

many times the initial extra costs because of its lower energy consumption and considerably longer service life. In many professional areas the rethinking towards consideration of total costs began a long time ago. It would be ideal if a similar process were also to happen to consumers and even more so in the public sector.

A pproximately 1.6 billion people

worldwide have little or no access to electricity. Until now they had limited possibilities participating in social, educational, cultural and commercial activities after sunset - including the world’s most popular sport, football. In November 2009 Philips came up with the ultimate solution: the world’s first dedicated solar-powered LED floodlighting (intense beams of light). The new Philips system enables communities in developing and developed countries alike to enjoy playing or watching sport long into the night, helping to bring the fun and enjoyment of sports to communities where a lack of electricity limits participation.

The solar system is available as a fully portable solution, and also on project basis. It can include LED floodlights, portable poles, solar panels and batteries, or just a set of floodlights. Setting up the system is made simple. Using the very latest energy-efficient LED lighting technology and advanced battery cells the system provides up to eight hours of floodlighting on a single solar charge – the equivalent of two or three full evening football matches or training sessions. This versatile floodlighting solution can also be very useful for non-sporting applications in locations without access to an electricity grid, such as evening classes in remote villages, festivities, safety and

• The LEDs used are warm white, 2,700 K, which is comparable with halogen or incandescent lamps

• Low-temperature performance LEDs operate in ambient temperatures as low as -20°C

• No UV or infrared• The majority of LED lighting fixtures in

the range are dimmable • Shockproof, robust and reliable LEDs do

not have a fragile filament and contain no glass, they are very robust and more durable than any other light source

The advantages of the LED lighting range
