Estimados Lectores,Nos dio mucho gusto

organizar nuestra primera fiesta navideña junto con la ProWorld Foundation. Había bastantes interesados que vinieron a saber más de lo que está haciendo la organización para ayudar a limpiar el aire y el agua en el Cusco y era una linda oportunidad para nosotros de tomar un momento y apreciar lo que significa trabajar en una

ciudad tan hermosa e histórica. Para honrar el año nuevo, en vez de tener un artículo principal para enero,

hemos decidido preguntarles a varias personas qué mejoras deseaban para sí mismo tanto como para el Cusco y el Perú en general. Fue interesante hablar con personas de distintas edades, y tal vez les sorprenderán las respuestas, sobre todo en lo pensativo que fueron algunas de las respuestas de los más jóvenes.

Tal vez se haya dado cuenta por la portada que hemos combinado los números de enero y febrero. Sabemos que son los meses más tranquilos del año en el Cusco, ¡entonces estamos tomando un descanso junto con todos los demás! Dear Readers,It was a pleasure to co-host our first holiday party, along with the

ProWorld Foundation. There was a great turn-out to learn more about what the organization is doing to help clean the air and water of Cusco and it was nice for us to take time out to appreciate doing business in such a beautiful and historic city.

In honor of the New Year, rather than have a feature article for this issue, we decided to ask a variety of people living here what they are looking forward to in 2012, both for themselves as well as for Cusco and Peru in general. It was interesting talking to people of all ages and you may find the responses surprising, particularly in the degree of thoughtfulness of even the youngest.

You may have noticed from the cover that we’ve combined the issues for January and February. We know this is the quietest time of year in Cusco so we are taking a break along with everyone else! You can find out about February’s cultural events by visiting our website, quepasaperu.com.pe, or our Facebook page. In closing, we wish all of our readers a happy and prosperous 2012 and look forward to being part of Cusco’s and Peru’s future.

¿Nos puede hablar un poco de sí mismo y su decisión de abrir esta cafetería?

Soy cusqueño mi madre es Arequipeña, tengo un primo que apellido Aguirre también que me dice que tenemos ancestros vascos.

Antes yo era empleado de una empresa de teléfonos que se llamaba Entel que después se privatizó. Estuve en esa empresa 10 años y vi que ya era mucho tiempo que estaba metido en una

especie de burocracia y me pregunte qué puedo hacer, y dije a ver un café. No tenía idea ni me gustaba mucho el café tampoco, entonces ya teniendo el negocio pensé que era necesario una cafetera. Me empezó a gustar el café y siempre digo que el producto bandera de este local es el café, y siempre he tratado de sacar el mejor café que pueda, viendo los proveedores, haciendo mezclas, probando, poniendo menos de este café,

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself and why you decided to open up this café?

I’m from Cusco, and my mother is from Arequipa. I actually have a cousin also with the surname Aguirre and he says that we have Basque forefathers.

I used to work for a telephone company called Entel, which has since then been privatized. I worked at that company for 10 years and after that I decided it was enough time in that kind of bureaucracy and I asked myself, what can I do now, and I said, how about open a café. I had no idea how to go about it and didn’t even like coffee very much, but once I opened the business I thought it would be necessary to get a coffee machine and I started to like coffee. I always say that the flagship product of this café is the coffee, and I’ve always tried to create the best coffee possible, looking into different suppliers, blending it, trying it, putting a bit more of this coffee in and a bit more of another one, and that’s how I’ve created our own blend using Peruvian coffee… one part is from Quillabamba and the other part from Chanchamayo. There’s a type of coffee called “caracolillo” (little snail) and I’ve said, there, this is my formula. I hate to brag but people started liking the coffee, especially those from abroad, and I now have many Italian and French customers who like the coffee.We love the coffee here! And how did the desserts come about?

Well, little by little, we started with the desserts, my wife makes them and they’re all homemade, it’s not like an industry. My wife makes them with a girl who helps her. Once a customer and friend came along and jokingly stated he was the tiramisu king, about 2 years ago. It was his birthday at the time and he asked if he could use the kitchen and the blender because he wanted to make his tiramisu, and at the same time he would teach us how to make it, and we did. Now we make it here at the café ourselves, not at the house, and it has been very successful.How long have you had the café and have you always been in the same venue?Yes, this is the same venue we started in, 14 years ago.Your café has a slightly bohemian feel and on the door there are always many posters for different cultural events. Tell us a bit more about that.

One of the things we do here in the café is to have the “culture door” to promote culture with a small space for posters of art and music events, amongst other things. I’ve seen many people who come to find out about the upcoming events and there are other people who leave me their posters to put up.

I think that’s how it should be, because I remember, many years ago, many people

Hay una especie que se llama caracolillo y bueno ya digo yo que es mi formula. A veces peco de modesto pero le comenzó a gustar a la gente sobre todo a los de afuera, tengo bastantes clientes italianos y franceses que les gusta.¡A nosotras nos encanta el café aquí! ¿Y cómo llegaron los postres?

Bueno, luego poco a poco salieron los postres, los hace mi esposa y todo es casero, no es una industria. Mi esposa los hace con una chica que le ayuda. Una vez pasó un amigo-cliente español y bromeando me dijo yo soy el rey del tiramisú, eso fue hace como 2 años. Era su cumpleaños en esa época, y él nos dijo si podíamos facilitarle el espacio, nuestra batidora porque quería hacer su tiramisú, y de paso nos iba a enseñar a hacerlos entonces aprendimos a hacer el tiramisú. Ahora lo hacemos acá mismo, no en la casa, y ha tenido mucho éxito.

¿Por cuánto tiempo tiene la cafetería, y siempre ha estado en este mismo local?

Si, aquí mismo nos iniciamos, hace ya 14 años.En su local hay un ambiente un poco bohemio y en su puerta siempre hay muchos afiches de eventos culturales. Cuéntenos un poco más sobre eso.

Una de las cosas que hacemos es aquí en este café es tener la puerta cultural, para promover la cultura con un pequeño espacio para retos artísticos o musicales, etc. He visto que bastante gente viene a enterarse sobre los eventos que hay y también hay quienes me dejan publicidad para pegarla.

Me parece que debe ser así, por que yo me acuerdo hace muchos años que había cierta afición por el teatro en Cusco, cuando no existía el teatro municipal. Entonces el teatro se realizaba en el teatrín del colegio de las Ciencias. Era el único auditorio en el Cusco y se presentaban obras teatrales, duraban 1 semana o 2, cosa que no sucede en la actualidad y eso que hay más grupos de teatro pero la gente ha perdido esa afición que tenía y a

mí me parecería interesantísimo, tan bonito que es el teatro, que la gente sea aficionada. Y vienen otros aspectos de la cultura, conciertos, hay algunos que son gratis y sin embargo no se llena la sala, y por eso me parece necesario que se promueve. ¿Y usted por qué cree que se ha ocasionado este cambio en interés en las obras de teatro?

De los tiempos que te hablo Cusco no era tan cosmopolita, era mucho menos que ahora. Había turismo pero era poco. Sin embargo la gente tenía otras aficiones. Otra afición que tenía el cusqueño como supongo en todas partes, era el cine. Aquí teníamos 8 cines, todos grandes, por decirte, donde era el Kusikay era el cine Garcilaso. Acá en Mesón

de la Estrella donde está el Teatro Municipal estaba el Cine Colón. En la calle Huascar estaba el cine Huascar que era el Cine más barato. Daban funciones matiné, vermouth y noche, ahora no hay un solo cine.¿Y en qué momento se empezaron a cerrar los cines, y por qué?

Realmente no se cual ha sido el fenómeno, me parece que ha sido algo general, que las salas grandes no eran rentables, en Lima mismo pasó el fenómeno y se convirtieron en multicines y aca no sé porque a nadie se le ocurrió invertir en multicines, la cosa es que la afición por el cine se perdió y era tan bonito tener cine.En los 14 años que ha estado aquí me imagino que el Cusco ha cambiado bastante. ¿Cómo ve la diferencia entre los tipos de clientes de ahora y antes cuando recién abrió, también teniendo en cuenta que la cafetería está ubicada al lado de la escuela de Bellas Artes?

Yo diría que la clientela no ha cambiado mucho, siempre hemos tenido una base principal de clientes cusqueños y residentes, que no son cusqueños pero residen aquí, el resto son los turistas, siempre hemos conservado esa

proporción. También esta calle se volvió más comercial al volverse peatonal y eso nos ayudó para las ventas. Me parece algo positivo de que en el centro histórico de Cusco se conviertan una mayor cantidad de calles en peatonales.Algo que es muy interesante para las personas que visitan, es imaginarse come era el Cusco hace

enjoyed going to the theatre in Cusco, when the Teatro Municipal didn’t exist yet. Back then, plays were being performed on the stage at the Colegio de las Ciencias. It was the only auditorium in Cusco and here they would stage plays that would last 1 or 2 weeks, something that doesn’t really happen nowadays, even though there are now more theatre groups. But people have lost the interest for watching plays they once had and it would interest me very much for people to get that interest back, theatre being such a wonderful thing. And then there are other aspects of culture, such as concerts; some are free and nevertheless they don’t draw a large audience and that’s why I think promotion is necessary.And what do you think caused this change of interest in going to the theatre?

I’m talking about a time when Cusco wasn’t as cosmopolitan… much less than it is now. There was tourism but it wasn’t much. However, people had other interests. Another pastime that was very popular with people in Cusco, like it was everywhere I suppose, was cinema. We had 8 cinemas here, all big ones. F or example, where Kusikay was used to be the Cine Garcilaso. Here on Mesón de la Estrella where the Teatro Municipal is now, used to be the Cine Colón. On Huascar was the Cine Huascar which was the cheapest cinema. They would show matinee movies, in the afternoons and at night, and now there isn’t even one cinema left.

unos 10 o 20 años atrás. Usted que ha vivido toda su vida en el Cusco, donde hace unos años no se veía muchos turistas y ahora hay un montón, ¿qué cambios ha percibido en ese tiempo?

Eso mismo sería el cambio, que se ha vuelto más cosmopolita y con más turistas, antes era más provinciano, más tranquilo, San Blas por ejemplo no era lo que es ahora, no frecuento mucho San Blas, pero las veces que he ido, se ha vuelto todo un movimiento “gringo”.

Dicen por allí, no me consta, pero que muchas malas costumbres han despegado como las drogas, pero yo no lo noto, no lo he visto yo, no soy bohemio, soy tranquilo. Por eso les digo que no hay mucho pan por rebanar en la entrevista, puede haber personas que si están metidas en el ambiente por las noches que son los que tienen mucho que contar.Ya estamos cerca al final del año entonces ¿qué planes tiene para el próximo año?

Un poco más general, me gustaría que el Cusco, bueno el tema no es pobreza, y tampoco es cambio, pero que al Cusco le vaya mejor. No sé si nos lo merecemos o no lo merecemos, pero sería bueno que estuviésemos mejor, en un amplio sentido de la palabra.

So when did the cinemas start to close and why?

I don’t actually know what the phenomenon was. It seems to have been something general, that the big cinemas weren’t profitable anymore. In Lima the same phenomenon took place, but there they converted them into multi-screen cinemas and here, I don’t know why nobody has thought about investing in a multi-screen cinema, but the thing is that the interest for going to the cinema has been lost and it was so nice to have a cinema.In the 14 years you’ve been here, I can imagine Cusco has changed quite a lot. What is the difference between the type of clients you have now in comparison to when you first opened, also considering the café is located right next to the Fine Arts School?

I’d say that our client base hasn’t changed much. We’ve always had a main base of customers from Cusco, as well as Cusco residents who aren’t from Cusco but live here, and the rest are tourists; that proportion has always been preserved. This street also became more commercial when it was pedestrianized and that has helped our sales. It seems positive to me that in the historic centre of Cusco more and more streets are being pedestrianized. Something that’s very interesting for people who come here to visit is to imagine what

Cusco was like some 10 or 20 years ago. You’ve lived in Cusco your whole life… some years ago you wouldn’t see many tourists and now there are lots. What changes have you seen during this time?

Well that would just be the main change… that it has become more cosmopolitan with more tourists. Before it used to be more provincial, more quiet. For example, San Blas isn’t what it used to be. I don’t go to San Blas very often, but the times I’ve been, it’s become a bit of a gringofied movement.

I wouldn’t know myself, but people say that many bad habits have taken off such as drugs, but I don’t see it myself. I’m not bohemian, I’m very quiet. That’s why I wasn’t sure this interview would be interesting enough for you. There are other people who are more involved in nightlife and it is they who have a lot more to tell.We’re coming to the end of the year so… what would you like to see happen in 2012?

In more general terms, what I’d like for Cusco, well it’s not really about poverty, or change, but for Cusco to be a bit better off. I don’t know if we deserve it or not, but it would be nice if we were a bit better in a broad sense of the word.Café DOS X 3

In recent years, there has been more and more encouragement for aspiring Cusqueño authors to publish their work, and rightly so. One such publication on offer is “Sentimientos del alma y el grito de

El Museo Qorikancha

La mayoría de las personas que visitan el Cusco se comprarán el boleto turístico que les permite entrar a muchos lugares de interés por la zona. Aunque la entrada al Convento de Santo Domingo y el Qorikancha no se incluye en el boleto, sí incluye la entrada al Museo Qorikancha y se encuentra muy cerca al Qorikancha mismo.

Dentro del museo hay una selección de piezas de piedra, cerámica, metal y tejidos de civilizaciones pre-incaicos y de los incas mismos. La mayoría de ellas son reliquias originales, a diferencia de las réplicas que a veces se encuentran en este tipo de museos. Esto mismo convierte la visita en un ejercicio mucho más entretenido, el de imaginar las personas que las usaban en su vida cotidiana.

Algo especial son los cráneos de personas que los presionaban con envolturas especiales desde niño, creando el efecto de cráneo alargado, algo que sale a las noticias con frecuencia posiblemente siendo algo de los extraterrestres. A un lego, simplemente se ven como cráneos normales que han sido alargados, pero de todos modos son muy interesantes.

Qorikancha MuseumMost visitors to Cusco will buy

a Boleto Turistico which allows entrance into many local sites. Although the Santo Domingo Convent and Qorikancha entrance fees are not covered by the Boleto, the Qorikancha Museum is and it’s located right near by.

Within the museum are a selection of stone, ceramic, metal and woven items from pre-Inca civilizations and from the Incas themselves. Most of them are actual relics as opposed to

replicas which are sometimes found in these types of museums. This makes it a far more enjoyable exercise to imagine the people that once used them on a regular basis.

A special treat is the inclusion of some skulls of people who had them wrapped as infants, creating the extended cranium effect, frequently showing up in the news as possibly being from aliens. To the layperson, they just look like normal human skulls that have been elongated but they are still pretty cool to see.

Lo mejor de la cocinafusión peruana

Hay varios restaurantes en el Cusco que dicen servir comida peruana fusión, dando alternativas a la cocina peruana tradicional. Como se ha visto en muchas otras partes del mundo, muchos de los platos fusión parecen existir únicamente por ser distintos al original. Este

no es el caso en Marcelo Batata, donde los platos son originales y riquísimos. De hecho en el 2011 la página web Trip Advisor lo condecoró como Restaurante del Año por su excelencia en servicio, calidad de la comida, y por el ambiente.

El restaurante sirve almuerzo y cena, ofreciendo desde opciones de comidas ligeras como sándwiches, ensaladas y piqueos, hasta comidas completas. Hay opciones vegetarianas en cada categoría también, y el chef está muy dispuesto a hacer pequeños cambios para acomodar el plato a su gusto. El lomo de alpaca se derretirá en su boca, el pollo en salsa de aguaymanto es una explosión de sabores y los pieles de papa son lo máximo. Hablando de papas, no se olvide de probar una papa rellena, que normalmente se rellena con carne molida, pero aquí hay distintas opciones de relleno, por ejemplo el de ají de gallina siendo excelente.

Hay una amplia variedad de vinos peruanos, chilenos, argentinos e incluso uno de España. Donde los vinos peruanos a veces pueden ser muy dulces, el Malbec de Intipalka es una muy buena opción. La carta de vinos también sugiere qué vino se podría combinar con qué plato.

Marcelo Batata también es un muy buen lugar para probar el pisco, el licor nacional. Pruebe un pisco sour, uno de los muchos cocteles creativos o escoja un shot de pisco macerado. Son mezclas de pisco macerado con una variedad de ingredientes naturales como canela y clavo, hierbabuena, fresa y otros. Disfruta tu coctel en el bar acogedor o en la terraza donde también tendrá una vista lindísima de la ciudad apreciando todo lo mejor que ofrece el Perú.

There are a number of restaurants in Cusco claiming to be Peruvian Fusion, offering variations on

traditional Peruvian cuisine. As is often seen in other parts of the world, many of

the combinations seem like they are there solely for the purpose of being different. Not so at Marcelo Batata where the dishes are original and absolutely delicious. In fact, in 2011, it was chosen by Trip Advisor as Restaurant of the Year for excellence in service, quality of the food and the locale.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, with choices that range from light fare such as sandwiches, salads and snacks to full dinners. There are vegetarian options in each category as well and the chef is happy to make adjustments to suit your needs.

The alpaca tenderloin will melt in your mouth, the chicken in aguaymanto sauce is a taste explosion and the potato skins are absolutely the best ever. Speaking of potatoes, be sure to try a papa rellena or stuffed potato… while these are usually filled with ground meat, you have some different choices here, the aji de gallina being an outstanding one.

There is an ample selection of wines from Peru, Chile, Argentina and even one from Spain. While Peruvian wines can sometimes be too sweet, the Malbec from Intipalka is a really nice option. The wine menu also offers suggestions as to what wine might be considered to pair with the various dishes.

Marcelo Batata is also a perfect place for sampling pisco, the national liquor. Try a pisco sour or one of the many other creative cocktails or opt for an infused pisco shot. These are well-crafted blends of pisco with a variety of natural ingredients such as cinnamon and clove, mint, strawberries and more. Enjoy your libation in the cozy lounge or up on the rooftop terrace where you will have a gorgeous view of the city as you appreciate the best that Peru has to offer.

The Pisco SourThe national liquor of Peru is pisco, a type of brandy made from grapes, and the quintessential pisco drink is undoubtedly the Pisco Sour. If you’re visiting the country and have been handed a complimentary version of the drink, you probably haven’t sampled it at its best. Be sure to try it as it’s made in a quality establishment with a good brand so that you really get a taste of it as it’s meant to be.

All pisco sours contain the same basic ingredients: pisco, lemon, a sweetener (usually gum syrup), egg whites, ice and bitters. However, the quality of the pisco and the ratio of ingredients to one another will make a big difference in the resulting cocktail. A commonly recommended ratio is 3 oz of pisco to 1 oz each of lemon juice, gum syrup and egg whites. After these are all blended or shaken together with ice and poured in the glass, a few drops of bitters are added to the top.

La GaleríaDelbarrio

Esta galería ubicada en Chorrillos no podía tener otro nombre, ya que Chorrillos es un distrito con mucha historia, cultura, identidad y barrio. Sin embargo antes no había ningún espacio público destinado a las artes plásticas y recién en octubre de 2009 se abrió al público la primera galería de arte del distrito.

Es una antigua y hermosa casona chorrillana de mediados del siglo XIX, con techos de zinc pintados, vitrales turquesas, cúpula, techos altísimos y otros detalles típicos de la arquitectura republicana. La recuperación de este histórico espacio, testigo de quien sabe cuántas anécdotas,

los inspiró a desarrollar este proyecto, desde la recuperación misma de la casona al reciclaje de muebles antiguos como mobiliario para la galería.

La necesidad del distrito de vivir y contribuir en su desarrollo es lo que impulsó a crear este espacio, una galería de arte con una tienda de arte y artesanía, muebles reciclados transformados por la misma galería, donde pueden encontrar una amplia variedad de obras de arte en pintura, escultura y fotografía además de mucho calor humano.

Delbarrio Gallery This gallery, located in the

district of Chorrillos, couldn’t have gone by any other name (Delbarrio meaning “of the ´hood” in Spanish), since Chorrillos is a district with a lot of history, identity and is very “street”. Nevertheless, previously there wasn’t a public place dedicated to the visual arts. It wasn’t until October 2009 that this, the first art gallery, opened in the district.

It’s a beautiful, old colonial Chorrillana building dating back to the middle of the 19th century, with painted zinc roofs, turquoise stained-glass windows, a dome, immensely high ceilings and other details typical of republican architecture. The recovery of this historic space, which must be a witness to who know how many anecdotes, was the inspiration for the development of this project, from the restoration of the building itself, to the recycling of antique furniture to serve as furnishings for the gallery.

The district’s need to make a living and contribute to its own development is what stimulated creating this space and art gallery

with an art and handicrafts shop, furniture restored by the gallery itself, a wide variety of arts works such as paintings, sculptures, photography, and above all, a lot of human warmth.

Chorrillos is a surfer district, located right by the seaside, which is why they’ve wanted to pay homage to this sport. To do so they invited many artists to participate in an exhibition which is a collection of surf art including photography, sculptures, engravings, drawings, illustrations and paintings. It runs between the 5th and the 29th of January and during the opening week videos related to the Peruvian sea will be projected.

Sintiendo un deseo fuerte para viajar y hacerme útil en un país menos privilegiado que el mío, busqué oportunidades para hacer voluntariado

en Sud América y me enteré del proyecto Kiya Survivors. No salté inmediatamente para hacer la aplicación, más que nada por la ubicación, ya que prefería estar en la ciudad del Cusco. También me faltaba confiar más en mi habilidad de manejar el nivel de discapacidad de los niños allí. Ahora entiendo como todos podemos contribuir al bienestar de los niños y jóvenes que Kiya cuida, y aprecio muchísimo como esta experiencia ha enriquecido mi vida. Ahora ya he hecho un voluntariado con Kiya tres veces y le tengo mucho cariño a Urubamba y sus habitantes.

Hace más de diez años, Suzy Butler, una joven turista en el Perú, se quedó pasmada por la actitud hacía y el trato de los niños con discapacidades físicas y dificultades de aprendizaje. Feeling a strong desire to travel and be useful in countries less privileged than my own, I researched opportunities to

volunteer in South America and became aware of Kiya Survivors. I didn’t immediately leap to apply due to the location, as I had preferred to be in Cusco. Also, I lacked confidence in my ability to cope with the level of disability of the children. Now, I understand how we can all contribute to the well-being of the young people under Kiya’s care and fully appreciate how my experience has enriched my life. I’ve volunteered with Kiya on three occasions now and have grown very fond of Urubamba and its inhabitants.

Over ten years ago, Suzy Butler, a young British visitor to Peru, was shocked by the attitude to and treatment of children afflicted with physical and/or learning disabilities or difficulties. Suzy decided to act for these seriously disadvantaged children and created Kiya Survivors in 2001. By founding the

organization as a British-Peruvian NGO, Suzy aimed to provide a proper education, love and support to ensure a brighter future for these children. The team at Kiya’s Rainbow Centre has worked incredibly hard over the past ten years to eradicate the social exclusion and abuse these children experience. Such was the extent of the stigma attached to these individuals, they were often abandoned by their families or mistreated by parents who didn’t understand how to communicate with their children.

Today, Kiya operates four centres for children with special needs in Peru. The first was the Rainbow Centre which opened in 2002. It’s a school working with more than 50 young people from Urubamba and surrounding villages who have some form of learning difficulty, have suffered abuse or both. The problems they suffer from include autism, Down’s Syndrome, cerebral palsy and numerous hearing and speech defects. There is no alternative support for these individuals or their families so Kiya fulfills a crucial role in their lives. By attending the school, the children receive not only education, love and support, but also hot and nutritious lunches. For many of them, it is the only substantial meal they receive each day.

The Rainbow Centre also offers physiotherapy, speech and language therapy; has an on-site psychologist who works with

no sabían cómo comunicarse con sus hijos. Hoy en día, Kiya tiene cuatro centros para

niños discapacitados en el Perú. El primero era el Rainbow Centre, que abrió sus puertas en el 2002. Es una escuela que trabaja con más de 50 niños y jóvenes de Urubamba y pueblos cercanos que tienen alguna dificultad de aprendizaje, y/o han sufrido abuso. Los problemas que sufren incluyen el autismo, el síndrome Down, parálisis cerebral y varios defectos del oído o del habla. No hay apoyo alternativo para estos individuos o sus familias entonces Kiya cumple una función muy importante en sus vidas. Asistiendo al colegio, los niños no solo reciben educación, amor y apoyo, pero también almuerzos nutritivos. Para muchos de ellos, es la única comida fuerte que reciben cada día.

El Rainbow Centre también ofrece fisioterapia, terapia del habla y lenguaje, cuenta con una psicóloga residente que trabaja con los niños y los padres, y también tiene una asistenta social que hace visitas a las casas de los alumnos del Rainbow Centre y otros niños del lugar en situaciones precarias.

Kiya también tiene un programa de acercamiento a la comunidad en Urubamba llamado Proyecto de Vida. La asistenta social visita las familias de algunos de los alumnos más pobres para asegurar que se les está cuidando adecuadamente y para ayudar a mejorar la economía de la familia. La asistenta les ayuda a los padres encontrar trabajo; coloca a los hermanos menores en un jardín de niños; asegura de que

the children and their parents; and also has a social worker who carries out home visits to the Rainbow Centre’s students as well as other local at-risk children.

Kiya also runs an outreach programme in Urubamba called Proyecto de Vida. The social worker visits the families of some of the poorest students to ensure that they are being looked after properly and to help lift the family out of poverty. The worker helps find jobs for the parents; puts younger siblings into nurseries; ensures that the parents understand the importance of a clean and tidy house; and checks that the children are fed and healthy.

Since 2002, Kiya has run a successful volunteer programme to ensure there is enough support for the on-site team of teachers, therapists and social workers. The volunteers bring along new ideas and constitute the main source of vital funds for all of the projects in Peru. A small team of staff in Brighton, UK, manages the charity and their work includes a ‘Sponsor a Child’ programme, recruiting and training volunteers and raising funds through sponsorship, grants, etc.

All of the volunteers work in a wonderful environment where much positive change is witnessed in the lives of the children. Personally, I find it hugely rewarding to spend time here. It can be frustrating as change is often slow and difficult but there is an overwhelming sense of optimism and

Desde el 2002, Kiya tiene un exitoso programa de voluntariado para asegurar que haya suficiente apoyo para los profesores, terapeutas y asistentas sociales permanentes. Los voluntarios traen consigo nuevas ideas y representan la fuente principal de los fondos necesarios para todos los proyectos en el Perú. Un pequeño equipo de empleados en Brighton en el Reino Unido maneja la ONG y su trabajo incluye manejar el programa de “Apadrine un niño”, encontrar y entrenar a los voluntarios y recaudar fondos a través de donaciones, becas etc.

Todos los voluntarios trabajan en un entorno maravilloso donde se ve muchos cambios positivos en las vidas de los niños. Para mí personalmente es muy gratificante estar allí. A veces es frustrante porque los cambios muchas veces son difíciles y toman tiempo, pero hay una gran sensación de optimismo y un ambiente muy alegre y positiva.

Yo le recomiendo hacer el voluntariado con Kiya Survivors a cualquier persona que quiere dar su tiempo, energía y amor en un lugar hermoso – hace una diferencia tan grande en las vidas de estos jóvenes y sus familias. El 15 de diciembre Qué Pasa, junto con la ProWorld Foundation, organizó una fiesta navideña en la Casa Cultural Tupac Inca Yupanqui en la Calle Arequipa. El espacio prestado fue el lugar perfecto para compartir un poco de alegría navideña, y a la vez presentar el trabajo que está haciendo ProWorld para limpiar el aire y el agua en el Cusco. Era una noche con mucha información y todos se divirtieron muchísimo, sobre todo gracias al vino que donaron Cicciolina y Baco.

On December 15th, Qué Pasa co-hosted a holiday party with the ProWorld Foundation at the Casa Cultural Tupac Inca Yupanqui on Calle Arequipa. The donated space was a perfect location for sharing a bit of holiday cheer as well

as introducing the work that ProWorld is doing to help clean up the air and water of Cusco. It was an informative evening and a good time was had by all, particularly thanks to the wine provided by Cicciolina/Baco.
