Annelies van Loon Postdoctoral researcher (in collaboration with the Mauritshuis The Hague and the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, supported by the NWO Science4Arts Program) Tel: +31 641366191 E-mail: [email protected] Research interests: Materials analysis and ageing and deterioration processes in Old Master Paintings REVISualizing Late REMBRANDT: Developing and Applying New Imaging Techniques Recent Research activities: The painting of Saul and David by Rembrandt (c.1652, Mauritshuis) was examined with a mobile macro-XRF scanner. The Ni : Co scatter plots made it possible to distinguish between the cobalt drier from a later addition (magenta), and two varieties of smalt that correspond to different stages in the painting process (red and green). Paint reconstructions were made to study the effect of the use of smalt, a cobalt-containing glass pigment, in Rembrandt’s paint mixtures (in collaboration with UvA Master C&R). Key publications: - A. van Loon, W. Genuit, C. Pottasch, S. Smelt, P. Noble, ‘Analysis of Old Master paintings by direct temperature- resolved time-of-flight mass spectrometry: some recent developments’, Microchemical Journal, Vol 126, May 2016: 406-414 (online 2015) - K. Janssens, G. Van Der Snickt, M. Alfeld, P. Noble, A. van Loon, J. Delaney, D. Conover, J. Zeibel, J. We were particularly interested in the arsenic-containing pigment in the yellow sleeve of Isaac.
