Purpose of S&Gs
Define career development as a legitimate specialization
Provide a foundation for designing career development-practitioner training
Provide quality assurance to the public Recognize and validate the diverse skill sets of
practitioners working in the field Create a common voice and vocabulary for career
development
7
How are the S&Gs used?
For professional associations– determine requirements for provincial/territorial certification
For educational institutions and trainers– design professional training programs
For career services organizations and others who hire career professionals
– establish hiring criteria– develop job descriptions
For individual practitioners– shows scope of professional competencies– helpful self-assessment tool– http://www.savie.qc.ca/Carrieres/An/Accueil.asp

How are the S&Gs used?
Competencies Outcomes Best practices Developing training curriculum Job description / job posting Employment contract http://www.bccda.org used S&Gs as foundation for
accreditation, training, and creating certification standards. Other provinces?

Move toward professionalization, and provincial certifications
* “Pan-Canadian mapping study of the career development sector”

Revitalization project focus
Technology, e.g. online and phone services Diversity, e.g. cross cultural Career counselling
– S&G working group is working with other groups such as the Career Development Chapter of the CCPA on this theme
Input and involvement of career professionals across Canada
11
1.Diversity How should diversity be handled in the S&Gs? As a
“core competency” or an “area of specialization” or something else?
Working with diverse client groups – not only ethnicity and home country: – newcomers– internationally-trained professionals– indigenous people– low socio-economic status– people with disabilities– people from different world religions– sexual orientation
12
1.Diversity
Questions and issues related to diversity:– Multi-cultural communication– Settlement issues– Immigration knowledge (cultural awareness, knowledge of
immigration process)– Employability assessment for newcomers– Referral knowledge– Credential Evaluation– Knowledge of regulated professions
and regulatory bodies
13
2.Technology Related to client service - career advising and counselling
– web-based– email – phone, Skype / video chat– group services by teleconference and webinar– new area of specialization?
Related to career professionals– new and emerging technologies creating opportunities for national connectivity– social networking media– teleconference and webinar, e.g. Maestro
Issues and questions:– privacy– efficacy vs face to face– increased demand for skills and/or training in
emerging technologies– What can we learn from others?
E.g. https://ismho.org/suggestions.asp
14
3.Career counselling
Issues– Distinguishing between career counselling and other activities
conducted by career practitioners such as career advising – Changes in the field since S&G inception– As provincial certification grows, what about consistency?
Plus, issues between diversity, technology and career counselling
– Emerging trend for skilled counsellors adept with new technologies / training required?
– Differing needs in different provinces and cities
