Sree B. Damodhar Rao , Chairman of RG Rao

Trust hails from a humble agricultural family

in Karimnagar Dist. In his childhood he un-

derwent several hurdles to educate himself

because of lack of financial resources. He un-

derstood in his early life it self that path of ed-

ucating one self is highly painful because of

poverty. In later years he decided to support

at least a handful numbers, and mitigate their

problems and thus he used to spare a part of

his earnings as officer of the Bank for educating poor students. After establishing

himself as a successful businessman, he started R G RAO Trust, for support-

ing meritorious professional course poor students. The Trust takes care in identi-

fying really poor and needy meritorious student, in Karimnagar District.

With its experience during the past decade, Trust recognized that the students re-

quire help from foundation level. In government Schools, the teacher student ratio

is rather poor apart from having low standards. This is becoming a handicap for

the students at a later stage. Trust plans to provide English medium expertise /

skills, so that the students can learn and to talk in English medium without any

problem and understand basic concepts easily.

In view of this objective, Trust invites donors and NRI supporters to come for-

ward generously in adopting deserving students, schools or in sponsoring them.

The Trust will help in identifying students, updating their progress etc., In this

process all the helping hands will have their own identity and have clarity about

their charity and Trust shall be working only as catalyst.

Sri Damodhar Rao had allocated a one core of Rupees as corpus and interest gen-

erated thereon is being utilized for the benefit of students. Apart from this, a share

of profit from his businesses is also allotted every year to the corpus.

Hyderabad, Karimnagar and Warangal :

Hyderabad,Karimnagar and Warangal District in an-

dhrpradesh girls struggle to get the attention and op-

portunity they deserve to be equal partners with boys in

their right to quality elementary education. RG RAO

Trust Education Project supports girl children in a varie-

ty of ways that enable them to continue with their edu-

cation. This includes on one hand their need for uni-

forms, Merit Scholorship, Gifts, personal hygiene ma-

terials and on the other, personalized tutorial needs

through the Academic Support Centers that RG RAO

Trust provides.

Because of the project, today, stories of girls abandoned by their parents, girls forced to stay

back at home for want of clothes and uniforms, girls made to drop out because parents be-

lieved it unnecessary to educate their daughters are gradually giving way to case studies of

girls flocking to school, of girls learning, and of parents thinking twice about taking their

daughters off from schools.

Project 2: 500 Litres/Hour Water Treatment Plant at Sanugula, Karimna-gar District

Project Details:

A 500 Liter per hour capacity Reverse Osmosis water treatment plant at Sanu-

gula village in Karmnagar District district, was technical support and main-

tainance of the plant was Naandi Foundation with the help of RG RAO Trust,

Hyderabad 2007. Naandi foundation will provide the technical support with two

years of warranty.

Technical and Maintenance by Naandi Foundation The Operator and the RG RAO Trust Water plant are the two ground level staff re-

sponsible for running the water plant and promote safe drinking water in the community. The operator maintains a

log book of all the processes. a Field Coordinator (FC) has been appointed to en-

sure smooth operations. He is responsible for identifying gaps related to training,

equipment, operations, sales and revenue, awareness activities and community

interactions. If he finds a problem, he immediately contacts his Team Leader (TL)

for appropriate intervention. The FC is also responsible for collecting water sam-

ples from the plants and sending it for testing to the Quality Analysis Team

(QAT). On an average, the FC visits each site twice a week.

Intended impact RG RAo Trust Water plant intends to have short term and long term impacts. The short term impact is to make safe

drinking water (which is tested on regular basis and proved to have lower levels than even the permissible limits of

water contaminants like Chloride, Flouride, Nitrate, Total Dissolved Salts, etc.) available in 5 villages of Chan-

durthi Mandal in Karimnagar distirict. The long term impacts that RG RAO Trust is

hoping to achieve are decrease in incidence of water borne diseases, reduced expenses on

alternate source of drinking water (like bottled water) and medical treatment, increase in

attendance in schools and increased involvement of men in fetching drinking wa-

ter. While it is a challenge to sell drinking water, it is a greater challenge to in-

crease price to cover the operations and maintenance costs. Opposition from the

community is instantaneous. So Our Trust provided money to Naandi foundation

to supply community with nominal rate 1lt Rs.2/-

We envisage that focus group discussions and consultations with various groups

of the community and panchayats would help to explain the reasons and long term benefits

Clean drinking water model makes waves in Suddala Village in Karimnagar For years the people of Suddala village in Karimnagar

district, Telangana, suffered serious health problems such as diar-

rhoea, joint pains, typhoid and frequent bouts of fever. None of the

available water in the village was potable: the local pond's filter

had fallen into disuse, the overhead tank that supplied water to

homes was outdated, and the groundwater contained alarming lev-

els of fluoride and chlorine.

Technically, Suddala is covered under the government's

safe drinking water norms. But in reality most of its inhabitants

did not get clean drinking water. Supplying water to the communi-

ty was a huge challenge for the village panchayat (local self-

governance

body).

RG RAO Trust a wholly donated of S.R.AQUA Mineral

Plant that has a presence in States in Telangana . RG RAO Trust helps remote and under-

served communities get access to safe drinking water by involving the community in set-

ting up low-cost water purification plants.

IMPACT

The biggest impact of the plant has been on health. "Previously, with the onset of

winter there used to be at least 10 patients every week with fever or diarrhea. But till now there

have been none," says Local Doctors. "We used to use water from wells, and as a result we de-

veloped joint pains, got fever and colds frequently," says Village president , a farmer who owns

20 acres of agricultural land. "After using plant water, all these illnesses have reduced."

Reach RG RAO Trust plants do not cater only to the villages where they are located. People from

neighboring villages are also regular customers. Villagers from Suddhala and surrounding vil-

lages to buy water. Many also get water delivered to their homes at free of cost only charging of

maintenance charges of plant.

Telangana State has witnessed several monumental changes in the field of Ele-mentary education in the last decade. The ratification of the Right of Child to Free and Compulsory Education Act in 2009 changed the policy landscape and opened up avenues for different stakeholders to have a series of opportunities to strength-en the quality dimensions of primary education in India. However, given the enormity of the task much remains to be done to improve the quality of in-service teacher train-ing in rural Telangana task taken by RG Rau trust. RG RAO Trust and Karimnagar Senior citizens Association jointly conduct-ed The Parents and Senior citizens Act 2007 Awarness programmes and field visit in the karimnagar District. Smt.NM.Rajeswari Trustee, explained the importance to know the act. Care of Elderly - Application for Maintenance The Bill places an obligation on children and relatives to maintain a senior citizen (anyone above the age of 60 years) or a parent to the extent that they can live a 'normal life.' This obligation applies to all Indian citizens, includ-ing those residing abroad.

In cases in which more than one relative will inherit the property of a senior citizen, each relative will be responsible to pay the maintenance fee in proportion to the property they will in-herit.

Maintenance tribunals If the tribunal is satisfied that the senior citizen is unable to take care of himself and that there is neglect or re-fusal of maintenance on the part of the children or relative, it may order children or relatives to give a monthly maintenance allowance to the senior citizen. The maximum maintenance allowance shall be prescribed by the state government, and shall not exceed Rs 10,000 per month. Before hearing an application, the tribunal may refer the case to a conciliation officer to reach amicable settlement within one month. If such agreement is reached, the tribunal may pass that order. The tribunal may order children or relative to make a monthly allowance as interim maintenance while the application is pending. The application shall, as far as possible, be disposed of within 90 days.

Offences and penalties On failure to comply with the maintenance fee, the tribunal may issue a war-rant for collection within three months of the due date. A study on farmers’ suicides in Telangana State (Karimnagar district) was undertaken by

RG RAO TRUST, an NGO, to identify various factors that led farmers to commit suicide and to

suggest possible solutions to avert such suicides in future. The study included 24 suicide cases, ma-

jority of which were from Karimnagr (180 cases). The farmers who committed suicides were most-

ly cotton growers. Out of 24 sample farmers surveyed, 89 per cent were cotton growers. The reasons

attributed for suicides were mostly crop failure due to pests and use of

defective pesticides. Only six per cent of the farmers were able to get

technical advice from mass media and the major sources of technical

advice were from private pesticide shop owners.

The amount of debts of the deceased farmers ranged from less

than Rs. 50,000 to more than 1.5 lakh. The range included Rs. 50,000 or

less (35 per cent), Rs. 50,000 to 100,000 (33 per cent), 1 lakh to 1.5

lakhs (23 per cent), and more than 1.5 lakhs (4 per cent). The loan spent

by the deceased farmers was on seeds, fertilizers and pesticide (75 per

cent), Dubai returns (15 percent) digging borewell (6 per cent) and for

marriages (3.5 per cent). The most common method adopted to commit suicide was consuming pes-

ticide (90 per cent) followed by hanging (8 per cent) and drowning (2 per cent). According to survey

of RG RAO TRUST, almost half of the farmers died under 40 years of age.

Govt., announced special compensation of Rs.6 lakh to the families of those who committed sui-

cides. It may be mentioned that only 20 per cent of farmers received assistance in agriculture while

the rest (80 per cent) had to knock the door of private moneylenders for their needs. Moneylenders

charge interest to the tune of 36 to 120 per cent.

Recommondation

1. To sustain th family of the

deceased, all the financial

help should be provided as

‘Fixed Deposit’ in the bank,

with quarterly payment of

interest.

2. Institutionalized Credit Sys-

tem to the farmers must be

simplified.

3. Moneylenders charging the

exorbitant rate of interest

must be punished.

4. The role of commission

agents, traders and interme-

diaries should be minimized

to facilitate the farmers to

fetch maximum price of their

produce.

5. Organic farming should be

promoted to avoid or mini-

mize the cost of pesticides

and fertilizers.

6. Agriculture policy needs to

shift from its current bias of

‘corporates first’ to ‘farmers

first’.

7. Seed supply must be main-

tained as a public god to pro-

tect farmers’ rights.

Recommendations : 1. A comprehensive Agricultural Insurance Scheme should be launched. Specific attention should be given to cover cash crops – like cotton, sugarcane and edible oils. 2 Biodiversity must be the basis of production to reduce vulnerability to climate and markets. 3.Strongest action under Indian Penal Code should be taken against suppliers and manufactures of spurious pesticides. 4. Likewise, the suppliers of spurious/inferior seeds must be punished 5. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) should be popularized among farmers. 6. Institutionalized Credit System to the farmers must be simplified. 7. Moneylenders charging the exorbitant rate of interest must be punished. 8. Gram Panchayats should evolve a mechanism to identify the indebted and suicide prone farm-ers and help them to overcome the crisis. 9. Extension agencies with a vision of eco-friendly sustainable development should guide the farmers to make the efficient use of water, electricity, pesticide and other inputs. 10. The role of commission agents, traders and intermediaries should be minimized to facilitate the farmers to fetch maximum price of their produce. 11. Agriculture policy needs to shift from its current bias of ‘corporates first’ to ‘farmers first’.
