RGS Newsletter Monday, 2 March 2020 © The Rockhampton Grammar School, Term 1 2020 From the Headmaster On Tuesday of last week, the School recognised and celebrated the 2020 Seniors at the Foundation Day Leaders Induction Ceremony. The School was extremely honoured to welcome special guest, the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency, the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC to the ceremony. I would like to share with you an excerpt from my speech given on the day. “The importance of stories to give people and cultures a sense of continuance and relevance is well known, but perhaps at RGS – where stories begin from the very first learning programmes in the Early Learning Centre and where people and their relationships are so pivotal to success – stories become integral to understanding and heritage. Consequently, in celebrating the Foundation of RGS 139 years ago, I would like to share with you a story about the School’s motto – Macte Virtute et Litteris - to provide an insight into our school and reinforce the values held so dearly by the community. In 1914, Dr Hay, the second Chairman of the Board of Trustees recalled how the School Motto was established. True education aims first at making the man, and after that, the scholar. In my boyhood, the motto on the coat of arms of a noble family arrested my attention. This motto was macte virtute, ”grow in manliness”. It needed only the addition of the words “et litteris” to cover the field and the method of all true education. While it is not clear why Dr Hay affixed the male translation to the motto, a more meaningful translation is “Grow in Character and Scholarship”. The motto is beautiful in its simplicity. It is inspiring in its alignment to the School’s commitment for 139 years to encourage every student at the School to seek to do their best in all that they undertake. This, I believe, is the continuing story for 2020.” Congratulations to all students who were elected to offices and received their badges for 2020. I look forward to working with you all over the next nine months. Dr Phillip Moulds, Headmaster FORMAL GLAMOUR: RGS Year 12 students looked stylish as they celebrated their Formal on Friday night.

Formal Glamour RGS Year 12 students made a stunning entrance to their Formal on Friday night. The arrival of the cars was moved to the School roundabout with the School’s historic fig tree providing a stunning backdrop. Year 12 students and guests then mingled in front of School House while RGS musicians added the ambience as they played from the balcony. Students and guests then moved to the Spaceframe for the official walkthrough before moving to the Robert Schwarten Pavilion, at the Rockhampton Showgrounds, for the dinner/dance. This year’s formal hosted 154 students with almost 1000 guests viewing the walkthrough and almost 500 attending the dinner. Thank you to the Year 12 Formal Committee for their efforts in coordinating the event. Thank you also to our School’s Music and Hospitality students for assisting on the night and to the many members of staff who contributed to organising the event and making the grounds look spectacular on the evening.

Head of Secondary School - Academics and Students

As parents or as educators we know a quality and useful education involves far more than undertaking assessment and achieving a solid ATAR/VET result at the end of Year 12. I am fortunate to presently be in Perth at Scotch College at the annual Round Square Forum. The Rockhampton Grammar School has been a proud member of Round Square since 2017. Round Square was founded fifty years ago and operates in fifty countries across six countries. Round Square ‘is a world wide network of innovative schools that share a passion for real world experiential learning and discovery, built around six ideals’. Via its school members, Round Square offers student exchanges on both an outgoing and incoming basis. RGS is presently in a planning stage to host its inaugural Round Square Student Conference in April 2021. As part of their education students at RGS are very fortunate to have the opportunity to engage with the Round Square IDEALS of internationalism, democracy, environmentalism, adventure, leadership and service. While academic rigour is a central priority at Grammar, it is important for the School to support the broader range of skills and qualities students need to be successful citizens in the community.

Dr Andrew Fuller Dr Fuller has recently been described as an ”interesting mixture of Billy Connolly, Tim Winton and Frasier Crane” and as someone who “puts the heart back into psychology”. As a clinical psychologist, Dr Fuller works with many schools and communities in Australia and internationally, specialising in the wellbeing of young people and their families. He is a Fellow of the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Learning and Educational Development at the University of Melbourne. Dr Fuller visited the School on Thursday 20 February where he spoke to the students and parents about “Identifying their Learning Strengths” and “How to survive Year 12”. The students gained an invaluable insight into how their brain works and how they best implement strategies to succeed in all facets of their schooling. Year 12 Formal The Year 12 Formal was held last Friday, the 28 February. The night was a huge success with both the walk through and the dinner being well attended by students and their parents. An enormous amount of work went into the organisation, preparation and running of this event and all involved need to be congratulated. The Year 12 Formal committee, chaired by Jackson Radel, Mikaela Bettridge, Emily Holloway and Lara Littleton lead their year level, with support from Mr Nick Blevin, Mrs Persephone Cook and Mr Brady. A special thank you to Ms Megan Thomasson and Mrs Sarah Tregea for their assistance in every facet of the operation. Of course, events of this magnitude require a massive team effort and a big thank you also needs to be extended to the grounds and maintenance staff, the kitchen staff and the music department and the hospitality and marketing department for all their assistance. Finally, the Secondary School Office would also like to acknowledge all of the student volunteers that helped out at the event, both through setting up, serving and cleaning up. These are often thankless tasks but without those volunteers, these events do not run.

Year 7 Empowering others with the vision to succeed. With a professional speaking career delivering over 4,000 keynote addresses, to more than a million people around the globe, Lorin is arguably Australia’s most prolific and preeminent motivational speaker. Lorin has the extraordinary ability to communicate, teach and connect people of all ages. With more than 40 years’ experience dealing with blindness, his approach to motivational speaking is unique, original and fresh, delivering profound messages with entertainment, storytelling, audience engagement and humour. • Develop Greater Leadership • Stimulate Thought & Innovation • Change Attitude & Behaviour • Raise Expectations & Potential • Clarify Goals & Vision Lorin is a great friend to us here at The Rockhampton Grammar School and we had a wonderful time with him this year as he inspired another group of Year 7 students. We hosted Lorin on 20 February as he took the students through his “Climb your own Mountain” motivational session and continued throughout the day challenging them to look within themselves and find their own ways to lead.

Study Skills Following on from the excellent session from Elevate earlier this month, Year 7 students have been learning about important Study skills to assist them as they approach their first set of High School exams. We have been exploring Mind mapping and Summarizing during our Tutorial Programme and it is impressive to see our youngest

students grasping new ideas and concepts as they become more confident with Secondary School. Year 7 Immunisations Thank you to those parents who have returned the Immunisations forms directly to the Health Centre. Our first Immunisation clinic will operate during your son/daughter’s regular Tutorial period this week. This ensures the students are not missing curriculum-based work and the nurses are only attending to one class at a time making for a smoother and calmer process. Your son/daughter will come home with a note the day of Immunisation for your records. Please if you have any questions contact the health centre.

Year 8

Term 1 is now in full swing and the Year 8s have taken it all in their stride. I have been particularly pleased with the student’s approach to their studies, their involvement in co-curricular and their behaviour towards each other and other members of the School Community. The first two form camps (8A and 8D) are being held at the end of Term 1 and preparations are about to ramp up for these. Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Swimming Carnival last Thursday afternoon (20/2/20) and Friday morning (21/2/20). At our regular Year 8 Assembly recently, we had the pleasure of listening to Mr Saxby who reinforced the message that our expectation here at RGS is that every student will do their best at everything asked of them. The message was well received by the students. During the past two weeks, in our weekly Tutorials, the Year 8s have been working on determining their Personal Values as well as their Signature Character Strengths. Values, Character Strengths, Mindfulness and Mindset are focus areas for the Year 8 Personal Development programme in Year 8.

Year 9

A big congratulations to Jardine for winning the House Swimming Carnival this year. More importantly congratulations to all those students in Year 9 that competed in the carnival. The turn-out was exceptional and as per usual the talent on display was incredible. This week the Year 9 students have had their computers re-imaged in order to ensure that they meet our technology needs for the next couple of years. This has been a complex operation and thanks to all those students who were able to meet the requests on time from the technology department. Some students may still need to get this done next week and they are asked to visit Mr Weeding to arrange a time to get this done next week. This week the students also took part in the School’s Foundation Ceremony, honouring our senior leaders for the year with his Excellency, The Governor of Qld – Mr Paul de Jersey. This week in tutorials we have continued to discuss the emotional needs of humans and how they impact on human behaviour. This is part of our Pastoral Programme leading towards the What about Me programme that will occur in Term 2. All year 9 students are encouraged to read the daily notices regularly as there are a significant number of sporting and cultural activities that are currently under way and or are about to start soon.

Year 10

Students are now receiving assignments across their subjects and some exams are also coming up. Students are reminded to ensure that exam time tables and assessment schedules are copied into their school diaries. Year 10 is a very busy and challenging year. Students need to be working consistently and revising work each week. Leaving things until the last minute will be unproductive and overwhelming. Organisation and preparation are skills that need to be developed. These skills are important to have for each student prior to matriculating into years 11 and 12 in 2021 and 2022.

Similarly, students are reminded that a strict mobile phone policy is in place for school hours. Research has indicated that devices have a negative effect on learning, hence there is no need for any device during school time. If a student needs to make a call, they can come to the Senior School Office and use the office phone. Subject changes have concluded for the term. Students are now locked into subjects for the rest of the term. Special circumstances for any further changes will be dependent on whether the destination subject is full and at capacity. The Round Square International Conference 2020 in Tasmania is now full. There are only 5 student places, but I am negotiating with the host school to accept one more for a male student. If you are a boy that would like to also attend, please come and see me in the SSO. .

Year 11

Students are really starting to understand the demands of Senior Schooling. In order to assist students, over the past two weeks form teachers have covered how to set SMART goals and time management strategies – a great reinforcement after the Elevate sessions. Andrew Fuller, a guest presenter, discussed with students their learning styles and how their learning style strengths can help support their weaknesses. He also discussed the importance of viewing a situation from different perspectives and how this creates a richer understanding of a topic. Most subjects now have assessment underway, be it assignments or preparation for exams held in week seven, so all students should be very busy! Students are reminded that there are tutorials available across many subjects if they require assistance. Tutorial information and exam timetable can be found on Student Share drive in the Year 11 folder and is on Parent Lounge.

Year 12

What a fortnight! The Year 12s are to be commended for their overall approach to the past couple of weeks. The culmination of the swimming carnival, Foundation Day and Leadership Induction Ceremony, exams and Formal preparations during this period has certainly posed a significant challenge to our students. I am pleased to report that through a cohesive spirt and strong sense of togetherness within the group, they certainly met and overcame this challenge admirably. Given this is my first involvement in the Formal and having seen first-hand the work that goes into it, I would sincerely like to thank the team in the SSO (Secondary School Office), Grounds & Maintenance, Catering, Boarding and the Formal Committee themselves who worked tirelessly to finalise preparations towards an excellent evening.

Online Registration In 2020, we will be trialling online registration for some of our sports and activities following the below steps – 1. Students will be sent an email to ask them to nominate

for a particular sport/activity 2. Parents of interested students will then be emailed the

registration information sheet. 3. Within Parent Lounge parents will then have the ability

through the Registration and Excursions section to give permission for your child to participate in the sport/activity Here you will also confirm your current medical details.

4. Payment information will be done separately using the information on the registration sheet and then sending your receipt to the appropriate staff member.

Our hope is to stream line the normal process and go paperless for parent consent to save parents continually having to complete the parent consent form and all medical details for all sports/activities and excursions. Notifications of Achievements Due to the vast array of core and non-core sporting activities that students participate in, can all students’ sporting achievements be emailed through to Mrs Linda Crossland, the Sports Administrator. We have set up a new email address for everything relating to sport at RGS – [email protected] This will assist the School in providing information in newsletters and collecting information for the annual sports dinner. Rebel Sport Community Kickbacks Programme Any time RGS students/families spend money in the store and notify the staff of what school they are associated with, the School receives 5% of every purchase you make through the Kickback Programme. If the opportunity arises, please support Rebel who in turn support the School. Mr Todd Wells Director of Co-Curricular Next newsletter – Monday 16 March.
